Twitter Vital to SharePoint Success: Evangelists (ComputerWorld)
Twitter has been integral to the popularity and adoption of SharePoint, according to evangelists of Microsoft's collaboration, file-sharing and Web publishing suite. Speaking at the Australia SharePoint Conference in Sydney today, Joel Oleson and Mark Miller said online spaces such as Twitter were dramatically shaping the future of SharePoint.

The Cloud: Battle of the Tech Titans (Bloomberg BusinessWeek)
Amazon.com's squat Seattle headquarters looks nothing like the country club affairs found in Silicon Valley. There are no free soft drinks or volleyball courts. The light fixtures hanging from the ceiling in the reception area aren't fixtures at all but rather collections of extension cords fitted with bulbs. The receptionists lack computerized systems for registering guests. They simply write down visitors' names on a piece of paper. Such is low-margin life in online retail, where Wal-Mart stands at the ready, waiting to take away your extension cords.

Eight Windows 8 Features that Could Save Microsoft (Digital Trends)
Microsoft is perhaps the most dominant company in the history of computing. It has ruled the PC world for two decades, cementing its Windows operating system as the only game in town outside of the minute marketshare of Apple and indie rumblings of Linux. However, the computing world is at an apex; things are beginning to change in big ways. Windows governs the PC world, but we’re fast entering a post-PC era.

Microsoft's Contract with Nokia Rumored at $1B (CNET)
It's been less than a month since Microsoft and Nokia announced a strategic partnership to work together in a number of areas, though mainly on mobile phones. One detail that was not disclosed at the time was what kind of dollar investment Microsoft had promised Nokia for developing and marketing Nokia-made handsets that will ship with Microsoft's Windows Phone OS.

IE6 Isn't the Only Obsolete Browser In Use (PC Magazine)
With Microsoft's push to eradicate its aging, problematic IE6 browser, PCMag looked into what other outdated surfing software people are still using. The array of Web browsers still in circulation would probably surprise the majority of Internet users, who by a large margin now browse with newer versions of IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. To conduct this investigation, we started PCMag.com's own traffic analysis tools, Adobe Omniture SiteCatalyst, to see what unlikely software our readers were using, then checked out Internet-wide stats from Net Applications' NetMarketShare.

Governance, Information Architecture, Project Management: Pick Any Two (SharePoint Magazine)
In SharePoint Conversations, we ask our resident think-tank difficult questions or dilemmas and then ask them what they would do, say, or respond to these scenarios. You’re invited to join the conversation too; the tankers, as we lovingly call them, are here to offer their own personal opinions, but you are free to agree or disagree. After all, who said these people have all the right answers?

SPD SharePoint Emancipation (EndUserSharePoint)
Perhaps I have become hyper-sensitized, much the same way a new car owner is suddenly conscious of every vehicle on the road that matches the make and model of their latest purchase, I’ve been drawn to every reference of locking down or blocking SharePoint Designer that I encounter. Some of these references have been firsthand conversations. At a recent SharePoint luncheon, a local architect said that even though they lacked standard governance on the topic, he has made it clear that he would not support any development outside of his team done with Designer in their environment (he later relented that this probably wasn’t entirely true,) however this seems to be a pretty common policy; it comes up often on Stump the Panel and on other forums.

Around Bamboo Nation
AUSPC 2011: Daniel McPherson on 'Social Computing Meets the Enterprise' in SharePoint (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Beginning his presentation with the acknowledgment that there is a "whole lot of snake oil with social computing," Daniel McPherson stated that his goal this afternoon was to boil social computing down to something that's realistic and useful to the enterprise.  "Social computing is where the knowledge management train dropped us off," Daniel observed, saying that today, "knowledge management is driven by you and me and is being done outside companies" via the various social networking sites which are available to users.  Citing communication as an understandably important aspect of knowledge management, Daniel said that traditionally the communication options were limited to one-to-one or one-to-few, but stated that the same methods don't work with a much larger audience, i.e., an enterprise intranet.  Daniel suggested that better ways to communicate with broad audiences exist now via social computing ... not IM, but Twitter, and not email, but blogging.  Daniel went on to say that the problem with knowledge sharing with, say, email, is that the knowledge tends to stay in the inbox of one individual and is thus inaccessible to the rest of the enterprise.  As such, the need is to make it just as easy to blog as it is to email, since so much knowledge is lost because, when compared to sending an email, it's "hard to publish on the intranet."

AUSPC 2011: Paul Culmsee Presents 'Community Challenge - Define & Design' SharePoint Intranet Requirements (The Bamboo Team Blog)
The first of the Community Challenge events that conference organizer Debbie Ireland mentioned in her introductory remarks this morning took place in the first session slot of the day.  Being the first in the three-part series, its topic was focused on defining and designing requirements for a SharePoint intranet.  Debbie provided a brief introduction to the Community Challenge initiative, explaining that they had decided to try it out for the first time this year, and are hoping it will become an annual happening in conjunction with the Australian SharePoint Conference.  The nonprofit organization that was chosen to be the initial beneficiary of the SharePoint experts volunteering their services in support of the initiative was WorkVentures, who weren't using SharePoint at all when they submitted their application.  Debbie explained that the three Community Challenge sessions being offered at the conference will represent a highly condensed presentation of the efforts of the project team to date.  Work is continuing on the project, so the sessions are intended to "show the work in progress" by the all-volunteer community effort, with the idea that sharing the work in progress with the community here at the conference will allow the organizers to solicit participation and help "lead [them] through the journey of the next phase."

AUSPC 2011 Keynote: Joel Oleson & Mark Miller Present 'The History & Future of the SharePoint Community' (The Bamboo Team Blog)
At the beginning of the joint keynote presented by Joel Oleson and Mark Miller at the Australian SharePoint Conference, Joel explained that as he and Mark had discussed what they could bring to Australia, he realized that "One of the things that's really evolved [in SharePoint] over time is the community" and that, given their combined experience as prominent members of the community, they were very well positioned to speak to the topic in their shared keynote.  Joel said that his history attending Australian SharePoint events goes back to 2006, but that his first exposure to the Australian SharePoint community began with Angus Logan telling him back in 2003 that he was a regular reader of Joel's blog.  Joel described that moment as an epiphany regarding social media and SharePoint ... "Someone in Australia is reading my blog?!"

Greetings from the 2011 Australian SharePoint Conference (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I've logged a fair number of travel miles on behalf of Bamboo Nation over the past three years, but nothing compares to the events I'm covering this week, beginning today at the second Australian SharePoint Conference in Sydney.  I was already booked to join the Sharing the Point Asian Tour when I was asked by my manager in December to extend my trip to the other side of the world by kicking it off with the Australian SharePoint Conference. Needless to say, having never been to Australia before, I was quick to accept.

BPC11: Keynote with Bill English and Owen Allen (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As reported earlier by Bob Young, we are here in Sunny San Diego for the Best Practices 2010 but seem to have left the Sun back at Bamboo HQ in Virginia! The conference keynote began with Bill English reviewing the definition of what is a Best Practice and key theme of the conference which is to be more on what should be done, and not just how to; the emphasis on the Why’s and the Should have’s, whereby connecting technology to Best Practices in the SharePoint world. The speakers were reminded that their sessions should have three very important elements - Clarity, Direction and Confidence and they must provide at least three best practices, one bad and one tradeoff.  This caused at least one speaker to promptly leave to ensure their presentation had all these parameters!

Bamboo Attends SharePointConference.Org in Baltimore (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Greetings from the Bamboo booth in Charm City, also known as Baltimore, Maryland.  We are here attending SharePointConference.org, a two day show right here on the Inner Harbor.  Besides the nice views and crab we had for lunch, we've also enjoyed meeting both existing and new customers, mostly here from the East Coast.  I've chatted with a folks from IT departments at companies such as Merck that are here looking for products that they can give their users without having to do custom coding.  When people take a glance at our product catalog with over 60 products handling everything from password management to project management, they are very happy to realize that we may have solved their build vs. buy dilemma.  I've also met with customers who are currently still using WSS 3.0 and debating about whether to make the leap to 2010 as well as people who are currently migrating.  Of course we're happy to tell everyone that all of our products are now ported over to 2010 and available for instant evaluation in our Sandbox.

Checking in from Best Practices 2011 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Hello Bamboo Nation!  I am in sunny San Diego for the Best Practices Conference!  And when I say sunny I mean 52 degrees and rainy.  However; regardless of the weather we are having a fantastic first day.  Although it is still early, I am overwhelmed with the response about Bamboo Solutions.  Everyone is coming up and raving about our Web Parts.  The most notable was a gentleman from Mindsharp who is delivering the keynote to kick the conference off.  He stopped by our booth bright and early to let us know that he is giving a shout out to Bamboo in the keynote.  Mindsharp recently conducted a survey about which third party applications clients are using for SharePoint.  When the results were tallied, Bamboo Solutions came out on top as the most used, Woo-Hoo!  We can't complain about that.
