Three Experts Weigh in on Best Practices for SharePoint 2010 Training (SearchContentManagement)
In many companies, employees are often left to their own devices to learn a new software platform when it's first implemented. If there’s any training at all, it’s usually hurried and incomplete. And when it comes to steadily evolving platforms with lots of collaborative functionality and multiple ways of managing information and projects like Microsoft’s SharePoint 2010, that’s exactly the wrong way to go about educating users and getting them to make the best use of the platform, according to experts.

Microsoft: 'Incredible Economies Of Scale' Await Cloud Users (InformationWeek)
There are "incredible economies of scale in cloud computing" that make it a compelling alternative to traditional enterprise data centers, said Zane Adam, general manager of Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud and middleware. Adam is one of the first cloud managers to speak out on the specifics of large data center economics. He did so during an afternoon keynote address Tuesday at Interop 2011 in Las Vegas, a UBM TechWeb event.

Microsoft Responds to U.S. Government Windows Phone 7 Location Privacy Concerns (winrumors)
Microsoft has responded to U.S. location privacy concerns involving Windows Phone 7. The software giant has issued a nine page response to the U.S. House of Representatives after receiving a request for information. Apple’s iPhone and iPad 3G devices log latitude-longitude coordinates alongside the time and date in a special hidden file on the device. The issue came to light in April after researchers discovered the functionality. Apple has been recording the data on devices since iOS 4.0 was released. Apple recently addressed the issue with the release of iOS 4.3.3.

Microsoft Oversight Ends with Little to Show for Effort (CNET)
As Microsoft's 2002 settlement with the Justice Department expires today, it's easy to look back at notice how much has changed in techdom. Web search has become a wildly profitable business. The burgeoning smartphone and tablet markets have exploded the notion of how people will do their computing. And social networks emerged, shifting computer users' focus. But one thing hasn't changed is Microsoft's grip on the personal computer market. In 2002, Microsoft's Windows operating system held 93.9 percent of the desktop and laptop computer operating system market, according to research firm, IDC. And today? Microsoft's share sits at 91.1 percent.

Microsoft’s Quest to Open up Government Data (TNW)
Earlier this year, a deputy of Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel approached a regional Microsoft representative to talk about open government initiatives. As an increasing number of local governments have recognized they hold a proliferation of data and the means with which to distribute it to citizens, Emanuel’s staff determined that there was no longer any excuse to hoard all of this information. Hence, why they’ve turned to Microsoft, a company that has been leading many of the largest open government initiatives to emerge within the last two years.

Can You Live in the Chromebook Cloud? (ZDNet)
The Google Chromebooks are coming, and at a decent price point that will surely attract casual users. What most folks will have to determine before picking up one of the shiny new Chromebooks coming next month, is can the cloud computing model work for everything? This is a hurdle that Google and its partners must overcome in the marketing of these new notebooks. If consumers buy them and run into even one task they can’t do the reaction is going to be swift and loud.

Track SharePoint 2010 Installations Across the Enterprise (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
Did you know that built right into SharePoint 2010 during installation there's a little check to look for a container in AD and if it exists then add the server? In fact you could create an AD Group Policy to block SharePoint installs! By default nothing more than a warning happens in the installation log and most people will ignore it and move on. Others will be a little confused and say, why is SharePoint trying to access an object in AD. What is this service connection point in Active Directory? I didn't know I should extend my Active Directory schema for SharePoint. Again, by default you don't have to extend the AD schema, but are there any benefits by doing so. I see three key scenarios here you can take advantage of all fairly straight forward with the right support from your AD team. (You know they already love you from your User Profile Service meetings.)

How to Remove a User from a SharePoint 2010 Site Collection (C5 Insight)
I was troubleshooting a recent issue with the User Profile Service, where I would make a change to a user account in Active Directory (like a spelling correction).  The Profile Sync would occur and I would verify that the correct spelling was in the profile.  However, the change did not replicate to the site collection like it was supposed to.  This normally happens via a SharePoint timer job named User Profile to SharePoint Full Synchronization.  It’s described function is: “Synchronizes user information from the user profile application to SharePoint users and synchronizes site memberships from SharePoint to the user profile application”

You Aren’t the Lone Ranger Anymore… Working Effectively in a Team Environment (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
So, the similarities between the tech bubble of the late 90’s and the current hiring frenzy of SharePoint people is too similar to ignore. It seems as though if you put SharePoint on your resume SOMEONE will hire you. This of course is good and bad.  Bad because people who don’t know what they are doing are creating huge messes, and good because those who know what they are doing can make more-money-than-they-are-worth cleaning up those messes.

SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SBS 2011 (BrainLitter)
Thanks to some recon from Robert (and his lab ;), I've got some answers to some questions that folks may have up front about SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SBS 2011 so I figured I'd provide it in a quick FAQ format:

Site Columns vs. List Columns (The SharePoint Blog)
Did you know you get more options when creating a site column than you do when creating a list column? Some are very useful, but tend not to be used, as people don't really know about them. To create a site column: Site actions; Site settings; 'Site column' under 'Galleries'

How to do List Highlighting in SharePoint (SharePoint News, Views and "How To's")
Lists can often look a little bland, and attempting to impatiently skim read them can often lead to missing important information. This is why a bit of well-placed color can really help users with their day-to-day work. In my last post How to create a progress bar in SharePoint I covered the various methods of displaying a progress bar on your SharePoint list view. For this article I’m going to do the same for row and cell highlighting, as I’ve spent a rather considerable time wrestling with this particular feature in SharePoint Highlighter:

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Working with the Status Bar in SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint 2010)
Among the useful new features in SharePoint 2010 are the enhancements available with the addition of the Status Bar, helping to provide a more productive experience for users. This seemingly small feature can be used in extremely creative and interesting ways to enhance your own custom SharePoint applications. In this post, we will take a look at how to work with messages on the Status Bar in SharePoint 2010.

New Product Announcement: Cross-Site Display Web Part (The Bamboo Team Blog)
With SharePoint Designer, connect to the SharePoint site where you want to display the list or library. Navigate within that site structure and open the Web Part page on which you want to display your SharePoint List or Library from a different site. In the menu option Data View, select Insert Data View. In the right-hand Catalogs frame… Confused yet? If you aren't familiar with the above steps, they describe the common method of displaying SharePoint Lists and Libraries across sites within SharePoint, an extremely handy but painful feature provided by SharePoint. With the SharePoint following growing ever more quickly with the release of SharePoint 2010, the ability to share information across sites is becoming more of a need then a nice-to-have.

Make Custom Master Pages Available to PerformancePoint Dashboard Deployment Settings (TechNet)
In Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, you can customize the appearance of a PerformancePoint dashboard by applying a custom master page. For example, you can create and apply a custom master page that uses a theme that matches your organization’s branding and color scheme. This article is an overview for applying a master page to published PerformancePoint dashboards. Whether you used the default master page (v4.master) as a starting point or created a new custom master page from scratch, you can apply a customized master page to your deployment of a PerformancePoint dashboard. When you deploy a dashboard to a SharePoint site, you must have at least permission level of Designers on the SharePoint site.
