Combining SharePoint Online, SharePoint On-Premise as a Hybrid in the Cloud (CMSWire)
Running in tandem with the release of SharePoint 2010, there are two other elements that, along with SharePoint, point to a more efficient and agile future for management of content. Those two elements are the proliferation of cloud computing possibilities and, combining these two other elements, the development of hybrid online/on premise computing environments. SharePoint deployments are hitting up to 70%, according to the State of the ECM Industry report from AIIM earlier, while an October report — also from AIIM — suggested that half of companies will be using it as their principal enterprise CMS.

Microsoft, Google Struggle With New Face Of Collaboration (InformationWeek)
It struck me while getting a demo of Salesforce.com's Chatter app: Facebook's three-panel page layout, dominated by a stream-of-consciousness jumping-off point for comment and discussion, is now the de facto standard for virtually every online collaboration site. As I wrote a couple of months ago when describing business-oriented collaboration services like Podio and Yammer, the next frontier in business communication looks a lot more like Facebook than it does SharePoint. So why does Microsoft, via Office 365, seem more focused on augmenting the traditional Office document and file-sharing paradigm with a cloud back end than on collaborating in the way that's become second nature to hundreds of millions of people?

Google, Oracle Less Secure than Microsoft? (ZDNet)
Google and Oracle have overtaken Microsoft as the vendors with the most vulnerabilities, according to Trend Micro's Third Quarter Threat Report. Google took out the top spot, with Trend Micro speculating that it may be due to the growing popularity of the company's Chrome browser and the short cycles between product releases, which limit how much bug testing can be done. It was ranked second, behind Microsoft in the second quarter of 2011.

Windows 8 Will Minimize Restarts After Installing Updates (Windows 8 Beta)
When it comes to Windows Update, one of the most discussed topics is the disruptive nature of restarts in the course of automatic updating. A recent post on Building Windows 8 blog enlists the improvements the Windows Update Team at Microsoft has put in to make it more user friendly and less disruptive.

Windows Phone Catching Fire with Developers: Survey (Redmond Channel Partner)
In the battle for third place behind Google Android and Apple iPhone, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform is making progress among developers, according to a new survey. The evidence that Microsoft is edging out Research In Motion's BlackBerry as smartphone platform No. 3 comes from the latest Appcelerator/IDC survey, released Monday.

FAQ: What's the Big Deal About Duqu? (ComputerWorld)
The recently discovered Duqu Trojan has received considerable attention from the security research community. Here's why. What is Duqu? It's a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) that is designed to steal data from computers it infects. It was discovered by the Laboratory of Cryptography and Systems Security (CrySys) at Budapest University.

Is SharePoint 2010 Suited to ECM? (EndUserSharePoint)
I say “Yes it is” and here’s why… SharePoint has been dramatically improved with the release of SharePoint 2010, and incorporates many new features which support the use of the product as a platform for ECM and image storage.

Defining a Form in SharePoint - Things to Remember (The Scribble SharePoint Blog)
I was working the other day with a client on defining the requirements for a particular form in their SharePoint system. It was proving quite difficult as we kept talking at cross purposes about the various functionality that the form could offer. So I laid out the building blocks on a whiteboard, and we were able to specify the form by referring to these items. I thought it might be useful to share. Many of these are useful for general form design, and SharePoint does impose lots of restrictions. But next time you are trying to define a SharePoint data capture form (or indeed any type of form - InfoPath, WuFoo, custom .NET etc..) consider the following:

What’s a SharePoint Saturday Like? (SharePoint and Assessment Blog)
It’s 6am in London on a Saturday morning, completely dark, no sign of dawn, the only sound I hear is an owl hooting. I’m off to SharePoint Saturday UK, set in the historic town of Nottingham (famous for persecuting Robin Hood, the outlaw noble who stole from the rich to give to the poor). SharePoint Saturdays are community events, free to attend, paid for by low-key sponsors. What is a SharePoint Saturday like?

The Value of Social in the Enterprise (AIIM)
It's easy to get caught up in the movement toward social applications for the enterprise. End users are driving it. They expect it. So much about the way that we connect, the way we interact with our friends and family, as well as with our co-workers, now includes some level of social tool interaction. We share photos through Flickr and Facebook. We create formal and informal groups and networks for ride sharing, for child care, and our various hobbies. We publish data that we read and share links and news and videos that we think are interesting, important, and funny. Social tools are becoming part of our daily lives.

SharePoint 2010 Branding Support File Statistics (SharePoint Branding & Design)
Have you ever wondered what are the major font types, sizes, colors, and images for SharePoint 2010? This post will cover some of the major statistics that are related to SharePoint Branding. This post originally spawned the topic of why SharePoint uses PT’s for font sizes when PX or EM’s are much better. Kyle Schaeffer created a very nice post about why you should use one format over the other: http://kyleschaeffer.com/best-practices/css-font-size-em-vs-px-vs-pt-vs/.

Deploying Branding Solutions for SharePoint 2010 Sites Using Sandboxed Solutions (MSDN)
The SharePoint development tools in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 provide a simple and effective approach to packaging and deploying the files and code that are required to apply branding to Microsoft SharePoint 2010 sites using a sandboxed solution. This article describes a best practice for creating sandbox-compatible branding solutions by using custom master pages, cascading style sheets (CSS files), and images that can be deployed to SharePoint 2010 farms that are running either SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010.
