Customizing SharePoint Site Templates (Windows IT Pro)
Microsoft SharePoint sites are groups of smart web pages in Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007, that let users store, manage, and share data via lists and document libraries. Although SharePoint ships with several site templates that simplify site creation, often administrators want to create a custom template so that users can provision sites that meet their specific needs and become productive faster. There are two ways to customize a template: site templates and site definitions. This overview of site templates and site definitions explains the differences between the two methods and walks you through designing, creating, and customizing SharePoint site templates. This is an extensive subject; I’ve tried to squeeze a lot of information into this article but have barely scratched the surface. I've included references to examples and further reading that will help you dive deeper into the subject.

Three Alternatives to Office 2010 (PC World)
It's a New Year, time to break bad old habits and make vows to live a better life. I can't help you lose weight or stop smoking, but I do have one suggestion: Break the habit of using Microsoft Office. Sure, you're used to using Microsoft's giant suite, and migrating to something different seems daunting. But here are three good reasons to give it some thought:

Microsoft and HP Ink Cloud, Virtualization Pact (Redmond Channel Partner Online)
Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday disclosed a $250 million, three-year partnership to develop and market next-generation datacenter technology and application infrastructure that combines virtualization, system management and cloud computing. The companies made the announcement during a conference call led by HP CEO Mark Hurd and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Ballmer Took Microsoft Reins 10 Years Ago with Focus on Internet (The Industry Standard)
Ten years ago on Jan. 13, 2000, Microsoft's Bill Gates turned over the CEO reins to Steve Ballmer, who emphasized then that the Internet would be the target for much of the company's new software development efforts. Fast forward to today's product integration announcement with HP and events over the past year with cloud computing and Windows Azure, and Ballmer's words ring true. Back in 2000, Microsoft was still under threat of being broken up by the Department of Justice. Today, Ballmer is trying to meld enterprise and cloud computing.

Yes, Windows 7 SP1 is on the Horizon (ZDNet)
Holding out for SP1 before making the leap to Windows 7? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that Service Pack 1 for Microsoft’s latest OS is now on the horizon. So, what’s likely to be in SP1? Top of the list will be all the patches and bug fixes that have been delivered to customers already. If you’re keeping up with patches than you already have these. On top of these patches and bug fixes will be tweaks and fixes based on feedback and telemetry received by Microsoft. Don’t expect anything ground-breaking here, it’ll mostly be under the hood tweaks.

Microsoft Prepares For Its Mobile Super Bowl (Channel Web)
Just over a week after the NFL Super Bowl next month, Microsoft will take part in its own "Super Bowl" at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain. That's where Microsoft is expected to talk in some level of detail about Windows Mobile 7, a release that could make or break the software giant's future in the mobility market.

Google and China Play Hardball in Fight Over Search Services (USA Today)
Google's bold threat to pull out of China has put a spotlight on something many in the tech sector have long groused about: China has been able to wedge its way into the hottest tech services by bending ground rules in its favor. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter and other companies covet a foothold in China's massive consumer market of 1.3 billion tech-hungry citizens.

SharePoint Online in the 2010 Wave (Arpan Shah's Blog)
I’m a big fan of SharePoint Online along with over one million other users out there. It’s a reliable, convenient service that allows companies to take advantage of SharePoint without having to host it themselves. It’s software-as-a-service at its best. SharePoint Online today, based on SharePoint 2007, does a good job providing some of the core SharePoint capabilities. In the second half of this calendar year, SharePoint Online will be updated to SharePoint 2010 at which point it will be even more powerful & provide even greater parity with SharePoint 2010 “On-Premises”. This is largely due to all the investments we’ve made in the 2010 wave around multi-tenancy and extensibility.

How to Install SharePoint Server 2010 Beta (Standalone) on VMWare (Perspectives on SharePoint)
I’m excited to let you know that I will be developing a SharePoint 2010 training course for Learning Tree International entitled: “Comprehensive Introduction to SharePoint 2010” that will be available in June 2010. I am very fortunate to be working with David Severn, SharePoint expert based out of Ireland and Karen Najjoum, Learning Tree Product Manager. In the spirit of collaboration and giving back to the greater community, we’ll be sharing our course development experiences with you on this blog and provide relevant tips and tricks about SharePoint 2010 that you may find beneficial. Check out this short video I recorded during our initial meeting:

SharePoint 2010 Code Deployment, Part Two (Binary Wave)
Part One of this series gave a general overview of SharePoint 2010 code deployment using Visual Studio 2010. Now it's time to dig deeper and take an in-depth look at how developers can customize the deployment process. We will begin at the lowest level by creating some custom SharePoint Commands, then move into creating Deployment Steps which utilize those commands and a Deployment Configuration that combines the Steps into a single deployment option. Finally, we will package it all together and use the Visual Studio Extensions and Managed Extensibility Framework to deploy our customizations as a VSIX package.

SharePoint Pearls (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
So, I have been so swamped lately with meetings, work, and my other duties that I have not had a chance to do any practical development to blog about. However, thanks to my good buddy Geoff Varosky (@gvaro) I know a technical blog I’m going to write… finding the time is just another issue entirely.

Link Two Lists and Display the Data Using the SharePoint Data View (End User SharePoint)
Do you have two lists that you would like to display their data in one convenient location? Well, the SharePoint Data View should work perfectly for this type of use. Follow along with the article to understand more about using the Data View to connect two list and display information of your choosing.

How to Show the Most Recent Comment on Items in a SharePoint Tasks List (SharePoint Blank)
When we left off last week, I'd reached a point in my test environment that matched the case that I was attempting to address: rather than having the most recent comment on an item in a tasks list render in the Comments column as desired, I was instead greeted with a View Entries... hyperlink.  The time has now come for the exciting reveal of how to surface the actual comment.
