Dedicated SharePoint 2010 Use Could Rise as Data Centre Downtime Proves Costly (Outsourcery)
Businesses could look at using dedicated SharePoint 2010 after new research revealed that firms could lose around $5,600 (£3,000) per minute if their own data centres face outage. Emerson Network Power found that the average cost of a data centre shutdown is thousands of pounds per minute, or the equivalent of $36,600 per hour, reports eweekeurope.co.uk.

Cloud Bursting: The Rise of Hybrid Clouds (CIOL)
In the past, it was only small and medium businesses (SMBs) that adopted public clouds. Now, we see a change in trend with larger companies adopting public clouds as well. In spite of IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) growing at a CAGR of 135 per cent as compared to PaaS at 54 per cent and SaaS at 14 per cent, there has been a tremendous growth in private cloud adoptions.

Why We Chose Exchange Online, Not Google Apps (ComputerWorld)
The City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has never owned an Exchange server, but starting on Memorial Day it will roll out Exchange and Outlook e-mail for 2,700 of its workers. Winston-Salem - population 230,000 - is yet another in a recent spate of city governments that have chosen to move to a cloud service for e-mail and collaboration. With tighter budgets than most corporations, government agencies have been the first wave of cloud adopters, setting off a war for Uncle Sam's business between Google (Google Apps) and Microsoft (Office 365).

New Malware Revives Mac vs. Windows Security Debate (CNN)
A new piece of malware has caused an uptick in Apple customers reporting infected machines, renewing a timeless debate on the state of Macintosh security versus Windows. The Trojan horse is called Mac Defender. It's a web pop-up containing a spoof message that tells customers their machines are infected by a virus and they must install anti-virus software. If customers agree to install the software, the program sporadically loads porn websites on their computer.

Gartner Says 428 Million Mobile Communication Devices Sold Worldwide in First Quarter 2011, a 19 Percent Increase Year-on-Year (Gartner)
Worldwide mobile communication device sales to end users totaled 427.8 million units in the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 19 percent from the first quarter of 2010, according to Gartner, Inc. Smartphones continued to outpace the rest of the market, and a newly competitive mid-tier smartphone market will drive smartphones into mass adoption and accelerate this trend.

The Next-Generation Browser: No URL Bar (Conceivably Tech)
Being able to type the address of a website is one of the most essential features we expect from web browsers today. Yet it is the URL bar and its purpose that is now being reconsidered by both Google as well as Mozilla for Chrome and Firefox. The next major revision of web browsers will include options to hide the URL bar. Further down the road, it is inevitable that the URL bar will become what it is supposed to be: A tool – not more and not less.

Open a SharePoint Modal Dialog from an InfoPath Form: Part 5 of 5 (Vivek Soni) (SharePoint Developer Team Blog)
We are developing an example application in five steps.  We completed the first step in Part 1, the second step in Part 2, the third step in Part 3, and the fourth step in Part 4. Today we complete the final step, “Connect the Components.” Then we will deploy the application and test it. Here is the roadmap for the entire development process:

Whatever You Do, Do Not Ignore Legacy (Clever Workarounds)
On the Twitterverse recently, someone stated that because of a problem of excessive SharePoint site sprawl, they were going to institute a new site approval process. On the surface this remedy seems to be perfectly reasonable. After all, there is a clear problem that has emerged and in the name of governance, we have taken steps to address it via this new process. There is only one small problem with this. It’s probably the wrong thing to do or at best, a minor facet of what to do.

Active Directory Groups vs. SharePoint Groups for User Management: A Dilemma (EndUserSharePoint)
I’m working with a small municipality and, like I always do, I recommended that they manage user groups in Active Directory as much as possible. Then they can add those AD groups as “users” to their SharePoint groups and inherit all the AD goodness. In doing some research on this, I found a nice post by Alexander Brütt that does a good job in painting the differences between the two approaches in a nice little table, which I’m lifting and showing below. Note the bullet that I’ve highlighted; I’ll talk about it more below.

Error message: "Column 'ows_' does not exist." When Updating Workflow Associations on a List (Stefan Goßner)
I just came across an interesting issue related to resource throttling and workflow associations: When assigning a workflow which should automatically start on item creation or change to a list we automatically try to create a new column in the list which is used to carry the workflow status information. I said "try to create" because the creation routine checks the number of lookup fields on the list and compares it against the threshold for lookup columns configured in the web application general settings:

SharePoint Intranet Implementation – CSF – Focus on Solving Business Problems/Needs (Mastering SharePoint with Bob Mixon)
It is critical that you focus on solving business problems, not rolling-out technology widgets.  As I have indicated in other articles, you must detach the non-technical user from the technical details.  Simply rolling-out a site, blog or wiki doesn’t necessarily solve a specific business problem.  And, if we aren’t solving business problems, the culture is less likely to get excited about our solution and use it.  Take the time to understand who the users are and what their day-to-day business problems are; then speak to them.  For example, if the Procurement department is telling you they are having difficulty delivering their training materials to the organization, don’t provide them with a wiki, provide them with a training solution that solves their problem.

Storage Options with the SharePoint Video Library (The Bamboo Team Blog)
The Bamboo SharePoint Video Library is just bursting at the seams with useful features: Yes, it can automatically generate thumbnails; Yes, you can view videos without requiring Silverlight (unlike the SharePoint Server 2010 Asset Library); and yes, it's compatible with WSS v3, MOSS 2007 and SharePoint Foundation 2010. It even provides a selection of storage options for video and audio files.  We're all well aware of just how large these files can get, reaching and surpassing the 1 GB threshold very quickly, but don't worry, SharePoint Video Library has your back!

Guest Blog by NewsGator's J.B. Holston: Part Two: An Afternoon in A-Day-in-the Life of a Social CEO (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As reported in Part One of this blog post, I 'work socially' as CEO of NewsGator. Here is a look at the afternoon of just one productive workday using social computing tools. I continued my goal of educating and informing my thriving network of influence as noted by an asterisk*. Note that these are excerpts rather than exhaustive details:

TechEd: 'Plan and Deploy My Site for Microsoft SharePoint Server' with Chris Gideon (SharePoint 2010)
Given that I'm a "social media guy," and given that My Sites are the social media hub of SharePoint, it should come as little surprise that I chose Chris Gideon's Plan and Deploy My Site for Microsoft SharePoint as the capstone for my TechEd 2011 experience yesterday afternoon.   With an agenda covering an overview of the My Site, planning considerations, and scalability/performance, Chris began by saying that "A lot of the philosophy behind SharePoint and taking advantage of these [social collaboration features] build off the My Site," and that the My Site represents "an endpoint to find out more about a given person in the enterprise, plus expertise-finding, and bringing in aspects of social computing" (naming social feedback such as tags, comments, rating, as well as the activity feed), and being able to "wrap that social information around documents stored in SharePoint."
