IBM Lotus Adds Micro-blogging, File Sharing to Social Networking Tools (ComputerWorld)
IBM today added micro-blogging and file sharing to its Lotus Connections lineup of social networking tools as the company moves to expand its suite of collaboration software. The 2.5 version of Lotus Connections, which was first introduced in 2007, also adds a wiki service and expands mobile capabilities with support for Apple's iPhone and Nokia S60 devices. The support provides micro-browser access from those devices to Lotus Connections Profiles, Activities and Blog services.

Google Wave: A Sea Change for Business Collaboration, Communication? (Search CIO)
It's not very common for people of all ranks and files in a company to get excited about a technology, but talk around the water cooler has been turning to Google Wave as users and IT contemplate the potential uses of such real-time collaboration mashup technology. Just look at the blog activity and you can see that people around the world are scrambling to make the list of the 100,000 chosen few to whom Google is sending invitations on Sept. 30 to test Google Wave. Until now, only developers have had access to the open source collaboration technology prototype that combines email, wikis, blogs, instant messaging and social networking capabilities with the goal of giving people the ability to communicate in real time.

Get Smart With SharePoint Documents (Law.com)
In law firms, documents are the most tangible product created for clients. They capture, refine, convey and warehouse legal expertise, thus representing a tremendous store of value. Given the pressures on firms to provide increased value at lower costs, it's imperative that they find ways to reduce the costs of creating and managing documents and increase their value to clients and personnel. Microsoft SharePoint provides a range of features to make your firm's documents "smarter," from capturing rich metadata to automating workflows to intelligent search. As applied, these features can transform passive documents into active, reusable resources.

Enterprise Applications: 10 Collaboration Platforms To Consider For Your Business (eWeek)
Collaboration is the cornerstone of getting work done in the enterprise. Collaboration may start with e-mail clients, but there are a number of platforms that enable file-sharing, offer wiki-like work space and provide real-time collaboration through Web conferencing. They also come in different packages, with some designed as on-premise installations and others deployed via the Web as cloud computing services. In this slideshow, eWEEK runs through some of the most popular collaboration platforms, from Microsoft SharePoint, to Zimbra and other solutions in between. This isn't an attempt to rank the products, or favor one over the other, but to show businesses what's out there to help employees better work together.

Google Chrome Infests Internet Explorer (Information Week)
Imagine for a moment what would happen if Adidas or Reebok began giving away free shoe liners for the ostensible purpose of making Nike shoes comfortable enough to wear. It would be something of a slap in the face to Nike. That's not far from what happened on Tuesday when Google released Google Chrome Frame, an open source plug-in that turns Microsoft Internet Explorer into "a modern Web browser," to use the term favored by Google and Mozilla for recent browsers that are not Internet Explorer.

Zend, Microsoft, IBM Join Forces to Simplify Cloud-app Development for PHP Coders (ZDNet)
Zend Technologies and a number of its partners — including Microsoft — unveiled on September 22 another cloud-interop initiative. This one is aimed at developers who are writing new cloud-centric apps in PHP. All the right buzzwords are part of the newly unveiled Simple API for Cloud Application Services. It’s an open-source initiative that currently includes Zend, Microsoft, IBM, Nirvanix, Rackspace and GoGrid as the founding members. (No Google and no Amazon, however.) It’s all about interoperability and community and dialogue.

Microsoft Bing Takes More Search Baby Steps (Channel Web)
Microsoft's Bing search engine grew nearly half a percentage point in August and now accounts for 9.3 percent of the U.S. search market, according to the latest data from ComScore. ComScore hasn't yet released its August search market data, but JPMorgan referenced it in a Monday research note. Bing had an 8.9 percent share of the U.S. search market in July, and while August's 0.4 percent uptick is hardly earth-shattering, Microsoft can still say that Bing has gained market share in every month since its release in June.

Courier: First Details of Microsoft's Secret Tablet (Gizmodo)
It feels like the whole world is holding its breath for the Apple tablet. But maybe we've all been dreaming about the wrong device. This is Courier, Microsoft's astonishing take on the tablet. Courier is a real device, and we've heard that it's in the "late prototype" stage of development. It's not a tablet, it's a booklet. The dual 7-inch (or so) screens are multitouch, and designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. They're connected by a hinge that holds a single iPhone-esque home button. Statuses, like wireless signal and battery life, are displayed along the rim of one of the screens. On the back cover is a camera, and it might charge through an inductive pad, like the Palm Touchstone charging dock for Pre.

Microsoft Office Web Apps Review: Watch Out Google Apps! (eWeek)
There are glitches, but we found the preview of Microsoft's Web version of Office works pretty well - and we went all-out to test it on non-Microsoft operating systems and browsers! eWEEK Labs' tests on the preview of Microsoft's Office Web Apps suite found it has its fair share of tech preview bugs - but is a solid start to Microsoft's counterattack on the online office encroachment of Google, Zoho and others.

Students vs. Google Apps vs. Office Web Apps (ZDNet)
I have spent quite a portion of my time covering the developments between Google Apps (Education Edition) and Microsoft’s Live@edu online suites; the latest features, the timeline and background information, and the increasing competitive natures of the companies. But throw in an interesting twist like Office Web Apps and it makes me consider the depth and breadth of Microsoft’s determination to make an impact in the office-in-the-cloud niche market.

Around the Blogosphere
SharePoint – Be Prepared (SharePoint Emergency Repair Kit) (Andy Dale SharePoint Blog)
This week I am going to talk about running repairs to SharePoint and what to put in your SharePoint Emergency Repair Kit. Last week I attended a wedding at a posh hotel in Derbyshire (Breadsall Priory for any old monks reading) with my wife and daughter. The morning before the wedding (which didn’t start until 1:30pm – meaning dinner would be well after 3pm) we sat down in the hotel for a coffee (well, I had a hot chocolate because I am not a coffee drinker) and a Danish pastry. Everything seemed to be going well until my observant wife noticed that a hole was appearing on the seam of my trousers that might well get larger as the day progressed. My wife is always prepared (even though she was never in the Boy Scouts) and within seconds was taking out a miniature sewing kit from her handbag and sewing up the offending hole. I was slightly taken back as I was wearing the trousers and it was in full view of the waitress, but a very quick and effective job was achieved. The rest of the day went well and I even managed to catch a few glimpses of England’s emphatic World Cup victory over Croatia.

Screencast: Understanding Task Dependencies, Lead and Lag (Meet Dux)
Whenever I'm planning for a project and developing a schedule, I review the relationships of tasks and make sure that they are realistic and practical. These relationships are also known as task dependencies. A task dependency is the logical relationship between project tasks. For example, if there was a task called " Scramble Eggs", the prior task or predecessor task would be "Buy Eggs". These tasks would have a dependency known as Finish to Start (F-S). We would have to finish or complete the task of "Buying Eggs" before we can start the "Scramble Eggs" task.

SharePoint BDC: Quick & Dirty Jumpstart (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
Okay, there are a LOT of great blogs and information already out there about the BDC.  So, I’m not going to reinvent the wheel here and teach you about it. I will, however, provide you with some useful links to help you get started and understand it.

SharePoint Development Solution End-To-End (SharePoint Application Development)
Over the next few weeks I plan on putting together an end-to-end solution that I've been working on for one of our internal clients. The goal is to demonstrate some of the things that I've learned (and continue to learn) while building a solution for SharePoint. I welcome feedback and tips as I'm sure there may be better ways to accomplish some of my goals.

Helping You Recover Your Work in Office 2010 (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
My name is Nitie and I work in the Office Reliability Team.  My team's goal is to improve Office reliability and your experience using our software.  When thinking about how we can improve Office, we usually aim to make the product do exactly what you ask it to do, but in this case I want to highlight a new feature where we are doing something automatically in order to help protect you from accidentally losing your work.

Around Bamboo Nation
Bamboo Products and Accessibility (The Bamboo Team Blog)
The announcement last month of our GSA contract listing award has generated plenty of new interest in our products from agencies of the U.S. federal government.  In the past, purchasers for the federal government have received Bamboo product accessibility compliance information on an as requested basis.  The recent surge in interest brought about by the new GSA listing has increased the number of these requests and prompted many to push for a more visible statement of Bamboo’s product accessibility support.  In an effort to address this, we have added a new Section 508 Compliance information page on our Storefront that is linked to all individual Bamboo product pages.
