EU Drops Microsoft Browser Charges (AP)
The European Union said Wednesday it is dropping antitrust charges against Microsoft Corp. after the company agreed to give Windows users a choice of up to 12 other Web browsers. Under the terms of the deal with regulators, Microsoft will avoid further EU fines if it provides a pop-up screen that lets European users — from March — replace Microsoft's Internet Explorer or add another browser such as Mozilla's Firefox or Google's Chrome.
Microsoft's Server Chief Talks Cloud (Q&A) (CNET)
It's been a busy year for Bob Muglia. Microsoft's server and tools boss shipped an update to Windows Server, got promoted to division president, and prepared Microsoft's operating system in the clouds--Windows Azure--for its commercial launch. In what has become a bit of a year-end ritual, Muglia sat down with CNET for a year-end interview. We hit on a range of topics, from the future of Windows Server, to why his bank won't be moving to Windows Azure any time soon, to the changing life of an IT manager, to Microsoft's consumer future. (Spoiler alert: Muglia thinks it is bright.)
Is Ray Ozzie On His Way Out At Microsoft? (ChannelWeb)
Does the executive reshuffle that accompanied the unveiling of Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)'s new Server & Cloud Division (SCD) in early December mean that Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie is leaving Microsoft? That's a question some industry pundits are asking in the wake of Microsoft's move to shift leadership of the Windows Azure development team from Ozzie to Bob Muglia, president of the Server And Tools division.
Microsoft Moved into the Cloud in 2009 with Azure, Office Web Apps (eWeek)
Microsoft took tentative steps to embrace the cloud in 2009, most notably with its development of Azure, Redmond's cloud-based system for creating applications and services. In a departure from its traditionally desktop-bound model for many of its applications, Microsoft also signaled that it would incorporate browser-based functionality into its Office 2010 offerings, slated for general release sometime next year. The release of Google's Chrome OS in 2010, although initially meant for netbooks, could change the general OS ecosystem in ways that could affect Microsoft's development of Windows 8.
Microsoft Taps Into Open Government Market (Information Week)
With the open government movement in full swing and the Obama administration's Open Government Directive finally in federal agency hands, vendors such as Microsoft are looking to offer up their help. Earlier this year, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon began offering to host public data on their cloud services, and the competition will likely only heat up. Microsoft has touted the fact that SharePoint is the front-end platform for stimulus-tracking Website Recovery.gov, and clearly has a few other ideas up its sleeves.
Oops We Did It Again! Microsoft Pulls Stolen Code (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft has been targeting software pirates globally for years, but perhaps it's time to look closer to home. The company has been forced to pull the plug on its Twitter-like micro-blogging site in China called Juku because approximately 80 percent of the code for it, as well as the overall design, was stolen from a competitor.
What Security Will Look Like in 2010 (PC Magazine)
It used to be that end-of-year security predictions were bold and almost science-fictiony. They have become more conservative this year and therefore more reasonable. I've been barraged with them and have attempted to collect the best here.

What Microsoft’s Surface Can Mean for Businesses (Technologizer)
Microsoft put its weight behind touchscreen applications at its Professional developers Conference (PDC) last month, but that does not translate to immediate adoption by real people. That could change –sooner rather than later—as companies that develop business-oriented applications for Microsoft’s Surface tabletop computer try to take Surface out of its niche and into the office.

SharePoint Web Part Gallery Realizations and Ruminations (SharePoint Blank)
Yesterday I spent some time on my My Site for the first time in a little while and, thinking it might be time to get to know a new-to-me Web Part, I edited the page and clicked the Add a Web Part bar to bring up the Web Part gallery and consider my options. Maybe it's because I haven't spent much time there of late, but one thing that really jumped out at me on the resulting Web Part gallery form was just how cluttered my Lists and Libraries section has become with content that I've created for mostly test purposes. Seeing all of that clutter quickly led to a pair of realizations, and ultimately ended up leading me on a path to learn more about the Web Part gallery itself, which turned into an adventure all its own.
