Microsoft Defers to Outside Dev for Stuck Windows Phone Fix (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft on Wednesday said it will not help Windows Phone users who updated their smartphones last month with an unsanctioned tool, and are now unable to apply a security update. Instead, Microsoft has worked with Chris Walsh, the developer of "ChevronWP7.Updater," to make sure a workaround he's created will do the trick.

Microsoft Tips for Migrating to IE9 (Redmond Developer News)
Microsoft tech evangelists addressed browser migration issues during a presentation on Monday, focusing on what developers and IT managers should know about moving to Internet Explorer 9. IE 9, which was released in March, supports some HTML5 features along with hardware acceleration of graphics and video, tapping the PC's graphics processing unit. The debugging of sites can be done using developer tools accessed by hitting the F12 button on the keyboard. The browser, which will run on Vista- and Windows 7-based machines, is considered to be "integrated" with Windows 7, using Windows-like features such as site-pinning and jumplists.features.

Will Microsoft Buy RIM? (PC Magazine)
At this week's BlackBerry World trade show, everyone expected the top headliner to be the company's just-released PlayBook tablet and its new software offerings. As it turned out, the gadget ended up taking second spot to a surprise guest: Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer. Ballmer came out during RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis' keynote yesterday morning to announce a partnership that would bring Microsoft's Bing search engine to BlackBerries. Search is a big deal in mobile devices, so it's fitting that a heavy hitter from Microsoft came to give its blessing, but many took the appearance of the CEO as a clear sign of bigger things to come.

Five Considerations When Evaluating Cloud Computing Architectures (PR Newswire)
An excellent starting point for an organization looking at cloud computing platforms is to examine its IT architecture.  Only by aligning the architecture – compute, network, data center, power and storage resources – with applications can a company be on the path to achieve the reliability and performance it requires within a cloud environment. "In cloud computing, true protection is an outcome of the right architecture for the right application," said Janel Ryan, senior product marketing manager at SunGard Availability Services.  "Organizations need to fully understand their individual application requirements and, if using a cloud platform, the corresponding cloud architecture.  With that knowledge, they can make informed decisions about what cloud platform best meets the reliability and performance requirements of their specific applications."

Put Down Your Pom-Poms And Embrace ROI (InformationWeek)
Enterprise 2.0 technologies have an amorphous benefit--it's hard to attach a metric to how well a team collaborates. For example, rising to "Wizard" status on a community site might feel like a momentous achievement, but it does nothing to measure the business value of what's been contributed and the underlying software.

LAWTECH: Up Close - Yammer Enterprise Social Network (WisLawJournal)
Time for me to ‘fess up: When it comes to social media, I’m a bit of a skeptic. It’s not that I don’t understand the value of using social media channels for marketing and promotion. Between the tweets, Facebook posts and blog entries, though, social media fatigue starts setting in. When the signal-to-noise ratio dips below the “meh” level, I’m done. I’m always eager to try something different, though, so when a colleague brought Yammer into the office I was willing to give it a fair shot. Eight months later I’m pretty impressed with what private social media can do for intra-office communications and productivity.

Saved By Google Chrome Frame: SharePoint 2010 and IE6 Story (From The Field)
You wouldn't expect anyone on this blog to advocate a competitor's technology... but this case is special. To cut a long story short, a customer found themselves in a situation where a SharePoint 2010 implementation plan collided with the presence of thousands of desktops across the estate still running IE6. Now, for those who may not know – these two products have severe compatibility issues, where SharePoint 2010 pages effectively cannot be viewed in IE6 – or at any rate this is not acceptable user experience.

Using PowerShell to Export All Solutions From Your SharePoint 2010 Farm and Other Fun (The SharePoint Farmer's Almanac)
Yesterday my client presented a fun little challenge. They have one 2010 production farm they have been using for the last couple of months. On it they have about 25 WSPs that their developers have created. (Insert funny developer joke here. Probably something about a 1000 developers, a keyboard, and creating a Shakespeare novel.) They wanted to move to a new 2010 farm and they also wanted to provision an integration (aka QA or UAT) farm. When I asked for the WSPs they gave me a pile but they were not sure if those were the actual ones deployed in production. Ugh. So instead we decided to figure out if we could extract the actual WSPs from the running farm. Turns out you can, you just need to use my friend Windows PowerShell.  After a little playing we came up with this to extract them all from the farm.

Best Practices for SharePoint Groups (SharePoint Magazine)
SharePoint permissions are confusing for most new site admins. At my company I see the majority of site admins (we call them site owners) struggle with them. The topic is complex because SharePoint provides so many options for managing permissions. Between the various permissions levels, inheritance, site/list/item-level permissions, version control, draft item security, Active Directory (AD) groups, and SharePoint groups, explaining the best way to manage permission would take several articles.

Deploying and Setting Permissions on a BCS Model via PowerShell (Brian Farnhill)
Recently I have been looking at ways that I can go about deploying a BCS (Business Connectivity Services, or the BDC for anyone still in SP2007 land) model via PowerShell as part of a wider deployment script for a project I have been working on, and finding out a good way to do this was not as simple as I would have thought, so I figured I would document what I did here.

Header Rows in SharePoint Tables (The SharePoint Blog)
Really minor thing here, but I've often been frustrated by the inability to remove bold formatting from the first row of a table. No amount of clicking the bold icon, or fiddling with the HTML does any good. Well it's obvious when you but SharePoint applies particular styles to the first and last rows, and the first and last  rows. You need to go into the ribbon to turn these off. Simple when you know, but frustrating when you don't.

SharePoint Search Query Returning Unexpected Results? Check Your Metadata Property Mappings (SharePoint Blank)
Today's episode of SharePoint Blank is going to be unlike any post that's appeared in this space previously.  You see, many's the time that I've gone into "the mailbag" to pluck a question that allows me to kick off an investigation into learning (and sharing) the answer to the question that had been posed.  Today, however, I'd like to hand the reins over to a friend to tell his own tale of a SharePoint mystery he'd tripped across... and how he went on to solve that mystery.

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: How to Create External Lists & Include Databases Using SharePoint Designer 2010 (SharePoint 2010)
SharePoint 2010 adds many new features to Lists. In this article, we will take a look at how to create an External List. As you know, the External List is used for displaying content that comes from Business Connectivity Services (BCS). The Business Data Connectivity (BDC) Service enables SharePoint to display business data from back-end server applications, Web services, and databases. This walkthrough shows you how to create a model for the BDC service that returns information about contacts in a sample database.
