SharePoint Usage Reporting and the Bottom Line (SearchWinIT)
Usage reports speak directly to the bottom line in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). Focusing on metrics like site summaries, top pages and top users will tell you how SharePoint is being used in your organization and if you are receiving a sufficient return on your investment.
Google Wave: A First Look (ZDNet)
Google Wave arrived back in May with a blast of publicity — including a keynote of its own at Google's I/O conference. The initial story from the Google team was impressive, with Wave touted as a revolution in collaboration from star developers the Rasmussen brothers (the team behind the first iteration of Google Maps).
Big Decision: Upgrade to Windows 7 or Just Buy a New PC? (The Washington Post)
October 22 is quickly approaching, and excitement over Windows 7 is at an all-time high. Manufacturers are announcing new hardware, and software companies are readying their newest apps. Users who just have to have the latest OS from Microsoft are faced with a pressing question: Do I upgrade my computer, or do I buy a new one?
Chrome Frame Erodes IE from the Inside: Can Google get away with this? (Beta News)
Yesterday's revelation by Google that its open source Chromium lab developers have been testing deploying the Chrome browser engine as an Internet Explorer add-on called Chrome Frame, and its subsequent opening up of that project to the public, is a surprisingly ballsy move from a company typically known for being cool, plain, and innocent-looking. Quite seriously, the complete engine is being offered as a downloadable add-on, with the promise that developers will be able to retool their sites to let IE users render them using standards accepted by developers rather than those deployed by Microsoft.
Microsoft Feels Virtualization Pinch (Redmond Mag)
How long does the operating system have to live? A very long time, probably. But how much longer will Windows be Microsoft's flagship product and the cornerstone of most IT departments? That's another question altogether. Windows is under attack again, but this time, the competition looks fierce. The New York Times recently published an interesting piece about how Google Inc. and VMware Inc. are putting the squeeze on Microsoft. That got us thinking about Microsoft's future -- and present.
Details of Computer Tablet Emerge, but is it Real? (Los Angeles Times)
At long last, details about a super-secret computer tablet have emerged, complete with pictures and even a video showing how it works. But it's not the long-awaited tablet that Apple Inc. has been rumored to be developing. This prototype reportedly comes from deep inside Apple's archrival, Microsoft Corp., where its development has supposedly been so blanketed in secrecy that many high-ranking company executives didn't know it existed.
Why Microsoft's Elop Isn't Afraid of Google (PC World)
Microsoft's Business Division oversees one of its most successful products, the Office productivity suite, as well as the company's lucrative server and enterprise software businesses. However, like the rest of the company, the division has not been immune to the pressure of the recession, and revenue fell 13 percent in the quarter ending in June.
Microsoft’s Looking Glass Will Let Marketers Peer Into A Real-Time Social Stream (TechCrunch)
Microsoft is going to let marketers and advertisers dip their toes into the social stream. The tech giant is planning to launch a new social media product, dubbed “Looking Glass,” which will let marketers aggregate and monitor social media platforms for brands and companies. According to a report by Ad Age today, the product is still in “proof of concept” stage and will be privately distributed to testers in the coming month. Microsoft’s advertising blog also mentions the new product.
How to: Create a Site Collection at the Root Level of Your Web Application (Web 2.0 Journal)
Have you ever wanted to create a site collection off the root of your site at a path such as (/MySiteCollection), only to find a screen that looks like this? This really stinks. After all, I don’t want my site new site collection to be under /personal or /sites. I want it to be under the root (/). The link to the left points us to the managed paths page, but you need to know what you are doing. Going to the managed paths page, we see something like this.

Low Impact Text Changing in SharePoint with jQuery (Fear and Loathing)
Mike Smith over at Tech Training Notes had a nice simple post a few weeks back on changing the default text displayed at the bottom of stock web parts in SharePoint. For example discussion boards show this text when it's blank: "There are no items to show in this view of the "Test" discussion board. To create a new item, click "New" above.
Top 5 Outlook 2010 Productivity Enhancements (Web Worker Daily)
Many users have a love/hate relationship with Microsoft Outlook — it’s the standard email and calendaring application in many organizations, yet it often doesn’t enable them to work as productively as they’d like, spawning a veritable cottage industry of add-ins.
Fast Tip: Add the Checked Out To column to your SharePoint Library (Get the Point)
Here's a quick and simple tip that can make life easier for you and the other people who use your SharePoint document library. The subtlety of the way the icon changes when someone checks out a document often escapes people. Especially when they are new to SharePoint. What I like to do to make things more obvious is add the Checked Out To column to the default view for the list. It's quick and easy. This video shows you how in about 30 seconds.

PM Central or Project Server 2007 – What To Buy? (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Several customers have asked us how does PM Central stack up against Project Server 2007. In answer to this frequently asked question, we would like to ask that you compare your requirements to the following set of questions, as doing so will help determine your Project Management maturity level and allow for a comparison based on your Project Management Process and its requirements. If, however, you have already completed a list of requirements for a Project Management Information System (PMIS) and are now comparing the features, the feature matrix at the end of this post will provide the quickest and most efficient means to determine what’s best for your environment.
SharePoint 2010 Enhancements for End Users: SharePoint Workspace and the Offline Experience (SharePoint 2010)
We've reached the end of the line with my look at some of the new end user-centric features in SharePoint 2010 as demonstrated by Tom Rizzo in his Overview and Sneak Peek video, but if you've ever had a need to take your SharePoint data offline, this final entry should be a doozy.
Guest blog by NaT: Audio File Support in a SharePoint Document Library (The Bamboo Team Blog)
If you upload audio files to a regular document library, SharePoint will sends back the file request as MIME Type of “text/html” (maybe text/plain) instead of “audio/wav” (or something similar audio type). For that reason, IE is not smart enough to detect the content is in fact an audio file to launch the appropriate application, perhaps Windows Media player (Google Chrome can actually detect it and play the audio file in-browser).
