Benchmark Test Results Show SharePoint Ready For Enterprise Content Management Scale (ECM Connection)
StorSimple announced that Microsoft has released results of a benchmark test that demonstrates how SharePoint 2010 can scale to one terabyte. A new whitepaper on SQL Server RBS with SharePoint 2010 and StorSimple shows the results of managing a one terabyte SharePoint content database against workloads that represent real-world scenarios. These scenarios were divided into 3 categories – (i) Upload, (ii) Full Transaction Mix and (iii) Backup/Restore, Migration and Search Crawl. The results showed dramatic performance improvements with a 98 percent reduction in backup and restore times, and a 75 percent reduction in index rebuild times.

Google's ChromeOS Means Losing Control of Data, Warns GNU Founder Richard Stallman (Guardian)
Google's new cloud computing ChromeOS looks like a plan "to push people into careless computing" by forcing them to store their data in the cloud rather than on machines directly under their control, warns Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the operating system GNU. Two years ago Stallman, a computing veteran who is a strong advocate of free software via his Free Software Foundation, warned that making extensive use of cloud computing was "worse than stupidity" because it meant a loss of control of data.

IE Blows Away Rivals in Browser Security (PCWorld)
A new report from NSS Labs studies how various Web browsers perform when it comes to blocking socially-engineered attacks. The startling results show that Internet Explorer isn't just better than rival browsers like Chrome and Firefox--but leaves competitors completely in the dust. Online attackers recognize that the Achilles heel in virtually any computer or network security scenario is the individual sitting behind the keyboard. There is no need to waste time or energy figuring out how to circumvent security controls and spread malware if you can just dupe naïve users into voluntarily running the malware.

Tablet Tipping Point Means The End Of Microsoft (As We Know It) (InformationWeek)
A few weeks back I wrote a column headlined "Microsoft Looking Like An End-Stage Company," in which I made the audacious suggestion that Microsoft as we know it may not exist in five years. I said Redmond's failure to perceive the grave threat to its core franchises posed by new computing form factors like tablets and smartphones could result in a vastly downsized company struggling for relevance in tech's most important markets.

7 Reasons You Won’t Want a Windows 7 Slate (Wired)
Word on the street is that Microsoft plans to announce a Windows-powered iPad contender at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show. We’ve seen this movie before. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer waved around a Hewlett-Packard “slate” running Windows 7 at CES 2010. HP later hyped up the device with specifications and a possible price tag, and then killed it before it even shipped.

Top 20 Tech Stories of 2010: The Good, the Bad, and Some Ugly (GottaBeMobile)
It’s list making time. And here is my list for the biggest stories in 2010. There are 20 stories here, some good, some bad, and some ugly. But these are the stories that I think 2010 will be remembered for, or rather those behind the stories will be remembered for. Later this week, I’ll have my predictions for 2011 up, but in the meantime you can check out how I scored on my 2010 predictions here or my now infamous Life on the Wicked Stage Ink Blots for 2010 here.

SharePoint or Google Apps, Which is Best for You? (Pentalogic SharePoint Blog)
With both Google and Microsoft offering collaboration solutions in the form of Apps and SharePoint it’s only natural that organisations should look at comparing the two. We think it’s worth looking at this debate for ourselves. So which is better – Google Apps or SharePoint? As ever, the answer really depends on what your business needs to operate and evolve. The key point to remember is that while they offer some similar features, both solutions are very different beasts.

Understanding the SharePoint 2010 Sandbox Limitations (Wictor Wilén)
Recent discussions I've been involved with and blog posts have highlighted some of the SharePoint 2010 Sandbox limitations (either as bugs or as a feature). I have also talked about this during SEF 2010 and SPCSEA 2010. While writing my book SharePoint 2010 Web Parts in Action I had the opportunity to discover these limitations early on and  have learned to live with it. If you read my book you will find a lot of references to "this does not work in the Sandbox" (you've already ordered it huh? Otherwise it's just one click away). In this post I want to give you all a little head start on what really happens when executing SharePoint 2010 Sandboxed solutions. Focus is here on Web Parts.

SharePoint 2010: Customize the Default Display List Form Using Only OOTB Web Parts (Jennifer Mason)
I have been working on a project that contains a list of FAQs. Basically we would like users to be able to quickly review the FAQs to find the answers they need. Pretty simple concept. The FAQ list is pretty basic and contains the following columns: Question, Answer, Rating, Associated Documents. Entering the FAQ is pretty easy and straightforward. Viewing the FAQ list item however leaves a few things to be desired. My initial thought was the simple "oh we can just use InfoPath to build a custom view"….well…sad to say but in this case we don't have enterprise so that option was out the window. My next thought was to use SharePoint Designer to create a custom list view. I thought about it for a minute but decided that it was too much effort for just the simple changes I wanted….so back to the drawing board

How to Scope Your SharePoint Projects (code|influence)
The "SharePoint project scope" is all of the things that must be produced to complete a SharePoint project. These 'things' are called deliverables and you need to describe them in depth as early in the SharePoint project as possible, so everyone knows what needs to be produced. Take these 5 Steps to scope your SharePoint projects:

Effectively Communicate the Power of SharePoint to a Business Audience (Nothing But SharePoint)
Most SharePoint consultants interact with a vast range of clients and I often find that organizations simply have no idea what SharePoint is, what it can do and most of all how they can apply it to solve their business issues. Over the years I have found that we are extremely poor at communicating what the platform offers in a way that makes sense to an organization. For instance in nearly every presentation that I have been in I have seen this presented to end users or non-technical staff:

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Programmer's Guide to the Filter Web Part (SharePoint 2010)
If you take a look at our SharePoint List Filters Collection, you will see that several of the most useful filters are made available on WSS, allowing users access to the same easy, flexible filtering systems available in MOSS via list filters for Choice, Current User, Date, Query String, and Text. With list filters such as these, you can easily provide end users with a simple system to temporarily and non-destructively adjust the way Web Parts consume data.

Senior SharePoint Systems Administrator - Portsmouth, NH
Liberty Mutual Information Technology is actively searching for an experienced Senior SharePoint Systems Administrator.  In this role you will perform the administration and operational functions required to manage, maintain and support the 7x24 operations of Liberty Mutual's Enterprise Collaboration systems & services, specifically the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) environments and operational processes. Most importantly, you'll be engaged in meaningful work for an organization that is committed to "helping people live safer, more secure lives" every day.

SharePoint 2007 Troubleshooting Expert - Chicago, IL
The resource should be extremely familiar with developing Web-based Microsoft Solutions, with specific focus on SharePoint 2007 and ASP.Net.  The resource is responsible for providing technical guidance and troubleshooting assistance to the technical team lead for other brands, so good communication skills are an absolute must-have.  Most guidance is at a high-level: evaluating a design pattern or helping to troubleshoot a production issue; some issues require a more hands-on approach, so there is some coding involved as well.

Microsoft Updates
SharePoint 2007: A user's presence information does not appear correctly in People search results intermittently (Microsoft Support)
Consider the following scenario you have user accounts in Active Directory with different SMTP and SIP addresses (msRTCSIP-PrimaryUserAddress). You import these users into your MOSS 2007 SSP using a profile import connection. You perform a full crawl to have these users show up in search results.
