Microsoft’s SharePoint Thrives in the Recession (The New York Times)
Hang around at Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., headquarters for five or ten minutes and someone dressed in khaki pants and a blue shirt is bound to tell you about the wonders of SharePoint — one of the company’s most successful and increasingly controversial lines of software. Think of SharePoint as the jack-of-all-trades in the business software realm. Companies use it to create Web sites and then manage content for those sites. It can help workers collaborate on projects and documents. And it has a variety of corporate search and business intelligence tools too.

SharePoint 2010 Has New Pillars (Intelligent Enterprise)
As many blog articles have noted (including the SharePoint Team Blog), Microsoft has released the "technical preview" of SharePoint 2010. What's significant though is a new graphic (shown below) for the famous six pillars of SharePoint. To start, you should realize that virtually every term previously describing SharePoint has changed; this may be part of a larger program to reposition the new version of SharePoint or simply a way to change the conversation. Significantly, Microsoft has completely removed the word "portal" from the SharePoint vocabulary. Not only has Microsoft removed the word from the product name in 2007, they've now removed it as a pillar. In truth, "portal" is an overloaded term and generally not descriptive. Microsoft's did not seem to directly replace it in the new diagram. However, SharePoint is definitely Microsoft's portal platform, and it's curious what marketing messaging will develop around the new version in this respect.

Microsoft Backtracks on Free Office Live Domains (CNET)
In a reversal, Microsoft says it will now charge all small businesses an annual domain registration fee, even those companies it had promised free Web site registrations for life. Starting October 1, all customers will have to pay $14.95 a year to renew their custom Web address. Microsoft offers Web site registration as part of its Office Live Small Business service. In some ways, it's understandable, given that Microsoft has to pay fees each year in order to keep renewing the domains.

How will Silverlight 'Light up' Microsoft's Web-based Office Apps? (ZDNet)
Microsoft still has yet to release the technology preview test build of its Office Web Apps that is slated for some time in August. But the company is sharing a few more details in advance of its release about how Silverlight will “light up” the Webified versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

Microsoft's Magnificent 7 Open Source Options (ZDNet)
Now Microsoft has officially decided that the GPL is a good thing and is using it to release code for Linux, it's time for the software company to take advantage of the many good things that being a member of the open source club brings. It's not quite the Berlin Wall coming down-not yet--but reunification may be on the cards. So what should Microsoft do to get the maximum benefits from the peace dividend?

Internet Explorer to Support the Proposed HTML 5 Standard (Softpedia)
After years of veiled and even outspoken criticism from browser makers and many web developers, Microsoft has decided to start supporting the proposed HTML 5 standard in its Internet Explorer web browser. While known for its spotty support of even ratified standards, Internet Explorer has been moving in the right direction in recent years with IE 7 and the new IE 8. The current HTML 5 draft brings a number of advanced features and improvements and has seen great support from Google, Mozilla and Apple.

Is Cloud Computing Really Cheaper for Corporations? (Business Week)
Cloud computing has emerged as one of the hottest topics in the tech world, and it’s clear that the computing cloud will be the primary place that many consumers live their digital lives. But it’s not yet clear that the cloud will be the same kind of transformative phenomenon for businesses. In fact, there’s a lot of skepticism about that. Is it secure enough? Will the captains of industry lose control of their data? Will it cost too much? James Sims, the chief information officer at SaveMart Supermarkets, told me recently that he’s not planning on shifting to the cloud. “Over the long haul, software-as-a-service will cost you more than running the applications yourself,” he says.

Microsoft Has Lost Its Mojo: An Open Letter to Bill Gates (Computer World)
Dear Bill, I know you've been retired from Microsoft's day-to- day operations for about a year now and Steve B. is running the show, but you are still Chairman of the Board and the public identity of Microsoft. That's why I'm writing you, Bill, because Microsoft is still your company and it needs you. Think modified Pottery Barn rule: you own it, you broke it, you fix it.

SharePoint 101 (Part 6) (Meet Dux)
Here's the last part of the SharePoint 101 screencast series recorded from SharePoint Saturday Baltimore.  In this screencast, I demonstrate how to build a project management dashboard and create a site template. I end the session with recommending strategies for organizational adoption of SharePoint.

Introducing PowerPoint 2010 (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
With posts about the Sections slide organization feature and the ability to open Unlimited Windows, the PowerPoint team has started to unveil many of the great new features included in PowerPoint 2010.  As mentioned in their Introduction, many of your presentations will look better simply because you're presenting with the new version of the software.  Most recently, they've been announcing the first-class video support features that are now built directly into the product.

Heads Up – Exchange 2007 Cannot be Installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Note “R2”) (Brain Litter)
This is ridiculous actually but it is important to note, for any upcoming installs. At this writing, with Windows Server 2008 R2 due out in the next couple of months (it RTM'd July 22, 2009), Exchange 2007 is not supported and there are no plans to support it (so Exchange 2007 needs to be installed on Windows Server 2008/2003, not 2008 R2).

Getting Your Feet Wet Writing Code For SharePoint – Part 1 of 4 (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
So, you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, or maybe this is your first time here.  Regardless, I think it’s time I showed you guys some code.  At my core I like to think of myself as a fairly talented developer.  I’m probably fooling myself, but I enjoy it and even find it relaxing at times.  However, lately my main job function has been that of a SharePoint Architect which does not leave me much time to write any code at all.

SharePoint User Interface - Keep it or Change it? (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
We often get asked by customers ... why did you decide to design your interface the way you did.  Good question!  In prior times when we were developing on Lotus Notes we tended to make improvements to the interface where we saw fit.  It seemed to make so much sense - we'd make it look way better for our application area, which was as it is today - collaborative work and project management.  Once we started developing on the SharePoint platform we stopped this practice!

What is SharePoint? Part 4: In Which We Pay Homage to the SharePoint Community (SharePoint Blank)
I'm just back from vacation, and I must say that it was a pleasure to return and read Jeffrey Washington's comments on each of the preceding posts in this ongoing "What is SharePoint?" mini-series.  Thanks for your feedback, Jeffrey! As well, I must confess that since I was essentially under orders to relax, stay offline, and truly enjoy my vacation, I didn't spend much time thinking about SharePoint while I was away, either in a general sense, a specific sense, or even a "What is SharePoint?" sense.  But vacation is over, and the time has come to jump back into the blogging pool (which I actually already did earlier today with a short post on the Bamboo Team Blog about additional chances to win a full access pass to the Best Practices Conference), so I'm going to dedicate this installment of "What is SharePoint?" to an aspect of SharePoint whose importance I honestly don't think it's possible to overstate, and that is the worldwide community of users which rallies around SharePoint.  You see, SharePoint is a platform that engenders a truly admirable level of passion in its adherents, which, in turn, has fostered the creation and continued existence of an equally admirable ecosystem: the SharePoint community.

Best Practices Conference Offers More Chances to Win a Full Access Pass (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Are they nuts to be giving away seats to the Best Practices Conference, one of the premier technology conferences in the world?  I can't speak to their relative sanity, but I can let you know that they are serious.  With over 24 Microsoft MVPs, the SQL Team, members of the SharePoint Product Team, and many more technology experts, the Conference Director has been quoted saying, "Yeah, I know it is crazy to give out seats, but what I really want to do is make sure people understand the Best Practices about SQL Server and SharePoint.  I have done my job by bringing together the experts and I understand that budgets are tight.  We are a community-driven conference.  It's for the community!"

Spots are Filling Up Fast for our SharePoint Project Management Workshops! (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Only 2 days have gone by since we announced our workshops in DC, Boston and NYC for August and September.  Spots have filled up fast - space is limited - so if you haven't already signed up, now's the time to grab a seat before they're all gone.  If you find that you are too late and your session is full - email us and let us know and we'll reserve you a spot at our next round of sessions.

Microsoft Updates
Search results are truncated to 10 items in the search alert e-mail message when you enable search alerts for a Web application in SharePoint Server 2007 (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, you enable search alerts for a Web application. If you upload more than 10 documents that contain the term that you are searching for, you only see 10 items in the search alert e-mail message. This means that the alert processing functionality truncates the search results to only 10 items in the search alert e-mail message.

Introduction to versioning (Help and How-to)
When versions are tracked for lists or libraries, revisions to the items or files and their properties are stored. This enables you to better manage content as it is revised and even to restore a previous version — for example, if you make a mistake in the current version. Versioning is especially helpful when several people work together on projects, or when information goes through several stages of development and review.

Create an Excel PivotTable with a Datasheet view (Windows SharePoint Services)
When you create a Microsoft Excel PivotTable with a Datasheet view, you first export and link the Datasheet view to Excel, and then create a PivotTable in Excel based on the exported data.
