Integrating SharePoint (ITBusinessEdge)
There's no doubt SharePoint Server is popular. Microsoft says it's the fastest growing product in company history – and that's no small feat. One in two corporations now use SharePoint, according to an Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) survey of over 500 existing users from the AIIM community. Unfortunately, I couldn't download the free report from the website – it wouldn't allow me to register – but a ReadWriteEnterprise article about the survey included these telling fun facts from the survey:
Improving SharePoint Performance Across the WAN (ComputerWorld UK)
Microsoft’s SharePoint 2010 has become one of the more important tools for sharing information across the enterprise. SharePoint’s live collaboration capabilities and document management tools have increased productivity for workgroups and ad-hoc teams across many businesses. The rapid adoption of SharePoint 2010 and the growth of SharePoint’s managed data sets is a true testament to its value. However, many organisations are discovering that as its SharePoint deployments grow and spread across multiple branch offices, performance suffers.
Microsoft and Nokia: There Will Be Blood (Motley Fool)
When Microsoft looks in the mirror, does it see Daniel Plainview? You may not remember the ruthless oilman that Daniel Day-Lewis played to Oscar-winning perfection in 2007's There Will Be Blood. Plainview won't stop at anything to get what he wants, and he feasts on those weaker than him who stand in his way. The famous "drink your milkshake" scene comes toward the end of the film, when Plainview gets his adversary, Eli Sunday, to embarrass himself by admitting to being a false prophet, and then proceeds to club Sunday to death. "I'm finished," Plainview belts out. Is Eli really Nokia CEO Stephen Elop? Is "I'm Finnish" a more fitting closing shot in this case?
Mozilla: IE9 Is Old (Conceivably tech)
It appears that Mozilla has taken the bait from Microsoft and is continuing a browser bitchfest with Microsoft. Paul Rouget, European evangelist for Mozilla, released an infographic that paints IE9 as a browser that is simply catching up with Firefox. We hear too much negativity in dirty politics already, especially here in Chicago. Do we really need to know how much someone else’s browser sucks? Probably not, but it seems to be the common theme these days between Mozilla and Microsoft.
Cloud Computing's Killer Applications (CNET)
The year 2010 will probably be remembered at the year that cloud computing "shaped" itself into a tangible concept, at least amongst those of us who care. 2011, on the other hand, will likely be the year in which IT figures out how to actually use cloud concepts. Of course there are success stories dating back two or more years, but what is happening so far in 2011 is a growing body of businesses, data, and applications that were born and cultivated in the cloud. Add to that the online and conference communities forming around cloud and new application categories and we are starting to get a clear picture of what the "killer applications" of cloud really are--at least as of today.
Kundra Outlines “Cloud First” Policy for U.S. Government (Forbes)
I was reviewing some of the social media activities coming out of the RSA Conference sessions this week, including a talk by the U.S. Federal Government CIO, Vivek Kundra, in which he touched on the government’s work with cloud computing.

Moving SharePoint to a Different SQL Server (Secrets of SharePoint)
This question seems to come up from time to time, so I decided to write a blog post on it. Yeah, I know there are other blog posts on the process, but none of them have the finish or flair of a Todd Klindt blog post so here we go. The reasons for doing this are many, but the problem boils down to this, “How do I move the databases SharePoint uses without seriously pissing it off?” This could be because you have SharePoint and SQL on the same machine and you need to split SQL out. It could be because your current SQL server is underpowered and you want to move it to a more capable server. Or, it could be because your existing SQL server is 32 bit, and you need a 64 bit instance for SharePoint 2010, and probably an upgrade to a newer version too. At the core these are all the same tasks. Now, how hard is it?
End User Certification: A Test for the Rest of Us (NothingButSharePoint)
In my previous article, I mentioned that I'd like to work with the community to build a certification test for team site administrators. As promised, here are the plan details. Who? You and me. We will create this together! Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. What? A certification test that can be used within any organization. It may not be a perfect exam, it may not include everything everyone would want (yet, anyway), it won't be an official Microsoft certification...but it will be free to use for as many employees as you need! Plus, by having it be built by the end user community, I honestly believe it will be far more useful and comprehensive than any certification that one person or one company could design alone.
NewsGator Social inSites interviews Glenn Berry, NewsGator's SQL Rock Star (Social inSites Blog)
NewsGator Social inSites (NG): Congrats on being named an SQL Rock Star! For customers not familiar with Thomas LaRock’s site, can you explain the significance? Glenn: Thomas LaRock is a well-known SQL Server MVP who works as a Senior Database Administrator for Confio Software (which is an SQL Server tools vendor). He is also a member of the PASS Board of Directors, and a frequent blogger who is also very active on Twitter. He maintains a recommended list of high quality, active SQL Server bloggers that he updates every month. They are separated into five groups, based on his assessment of their quality and quantity of work. Being on his list is considered a pretty high honor in the overall SQL Server community. I was recently promoted, based on his rankings, to his MSDB Group.

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Programmer’s Guide - Create a Dropdown Menu with Multiple Selections (SharePoint 2010)
One of the measures of success of a company's website is the use of state-of-the-art Web tools and controls, and the manner in which they're presented on the site to display useful information. Visual Studio .NET comes with a wide range of Web server controls, and these controls possess DHTML characteristics (e.g., Autopostback and EnableSessionState) which are easy to use. They also require less space to present a bunch of information on a Web page. DropdownList is one of the most flexible objects in HTML. It is similar to that of a radio button in that only one item can be selected from a group of items, but the difference is that a dropdown menu occupies less real estate as compared to Radiobutton where all of the possible selections are presented at once.
