By making their Office 2010 applications available as regular client applications and as web applications, Microsoft has made Office completely cross-platform in one movement. It's a cunning ploy that will entrench Office to an even greater extent within organisations and push its SharePoint infrastructure.
No Alternative to Microsoft Office? IBM Begs to Differ (San Francisco Chronicle)
IBM Thursday announced upgrades to and a roadmap for its 15-month-old Lotus Symphony suite of productivity tools, emphasizing it indeed offers an alternative to Microsoft Office. The move comes after Microsoft recently said that a court order to remove Office from store shelves next month could leave consumers and businesses "stranded without an alternative set of software."
Microsoft, Yahoo Face In-Depth Review of Search-Engine Accord (Bloomberg)
Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo! Inc. have been asked by the U.S. Justice Department for more details on a proposed Internet-search partnership, expanding the agency’s review of the agreement. The request means regulators will do a more extensive examination, rather than approve the deal immediately. Microsoft predicted an in-depth review when the accord was announced in July, said company spokesman Jack Evans. He declined to comment on the contents of the request.

Scandal! Microsoft is sending out marketing materials to retailers that -- gasp! -- make Windows look better than its competitors. Will this bully's reign of terror ever end? Seriously, this week, the trade press and the conblogeration (it's sort of a combination of conglomeration and blog -- we like it better than blogosphere) went nuts over materials Microsoft sent to Best Buy employees. These propaganda pieces touted Windows 7's advantages over Linux and the Mac.

Despite recommendations otherwise, many CIOs and organizations are resisting the idea of wide-scale Windows 7 deployments. The reasons to avoid executing a Windows 7 upgrade are time-honored retreads of traditional points of view. They are supported by the weight and wisdom of decades of OS deployment experience–not to mention the horror stories culled from thousands of failed projects.
White House CIO to Disclose Cloud Computing Plans (Computer World)
White House Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra will explain how the federal government plans to offer cloud computing services to U.S. agencies at a Silicon Valley press event set for next Tuesday. The event is a likely setting for Kundra to roll out the first phase of the government's cloud computing storefront, which will give agencies a central place to acquire simple collaboration and productivity tools. Kundra has been backing cloud computing as a way to cut government IT costs, by making inexpensive and easy-to-deploy computing services available via the Internet.
Microsoft Open-Source Efforts to Go ‘Mainstream` (eWeek)
Despite losing a key advocate in its open-source efforts, Microsoft's focus on advancing its relationship with the open-source community will continue apace. Sam Ramji, Microsoft's senior director of Platform Strategy, is leaving the company as of Sept. 25 to become interim president of the CodePlex Foundation, a new independent open-source foundation founded and funded by Microsoft.
