Microsoft and Google Launch New Assaults on the Cloud (InfoWorld)
Not since the early '90s, when IBM fought its last stand against Microsoft for the desktop, have we seen anything like the epic battle between Microsoft and Google for the cloud. On Friday we witnessed this conflict in microcosm at InfoWorld's offices. Microsoft representatives stopped by in the morning to demo an early beta version of Office 365, the company's bundle of Office Professional Plus 2010 with cloud-based versions of Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync. That afternoon, Google representatives popped in to demo Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office, a free add-on that allows existing versions of Microsoft Office (2003 and up) to sync Office documents with Google Docs and engage in simultaneous group editing.

White Paper: SharePoint 2010 Enables The Enterprise (Download) (ECM Connection)
The Microsoft SharePoint content management system has grown so fast and become so ubiquitous that AIIM President John Mancini recently suggested it had become a common noun for content management, like Kleenex for tissue, and Xerox for copying. Research firm The Radicati Group says that SharePoint is growing 25 percent annually, several times the rate of the overall ECM market, which sunk to single digits in 2008. Overall SharePoint adoption rates have exceeded 65 percent across a variety of regions and industries, according to recent AIIM surveys.

Have the Mobile OS Wars Really Been Decided Already? (ZDNet)
Apple’s iOS and Android will be the dominant platforms for mobile operating systems and rivals can just pack it in. It’s over. Kaput. Why should competitors bother? And why would developers pick anything other than Android and iOS? That argument comes from Stifel Nicolaus analyst Doug Reid. In a research report last week, Reid said that the mobile OS war has been decided and future growth will come from the connected home.

How Dead is the PBX Really? (NetworkWorld)
The role of the PBX is changing in importance, but it's still too early to issue a death certificate, according to Infonetics. PBXs took a big hit when the economy faltered two years ago -- sales dropped 25% in 2009 -- and they have been struggling to rebound, says Matthias Machowinski, an analyst with Infonetics, but they are far from out, as Microsoft suggested last week with its announcement of its latest unified communications platform Lync 2010, a renaming of its Office Communications Server line.

So... Whatever Happened to Google's Chrome OS? (ZDNet)
It was just about a year and a half ago that Google started talking up plans for its Chrome OS. As I recall, a number of bloggers and reporters began tolling the death knell for Windows at that time, claiming Google’s “operating-system-less” OS would trump Windows 7, Windows 8 and maybe even Mac OS X. So where is it? In June 2009, Google officials said to expect Chrome OS to ship in the second half of 2010. In mid-November 2010, CEO Eric Schmidt said Chrome OS was still a few months away. Schmidt also said that Android should be considered the touch-centric OS, whereas Chrome OS is more suited for machines with keyboards. But that isn’t stopping folks from pining for a Chrome OS tablet.

Organizations and The Government are Adopting: An Interview on Social Business with MITRE's Senior Principal Scientist Nahum Gershon (CMSWire)
Nahum Gershon is Senior Principal Scientist at MITRE — he is tasked with helping MITRE and the government “go social.” After his panel at the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Santa Clara he opened up about technology, art and working with government in the age of social. Nahum Gershon likes to schmooze. Particularly if it’s schmoozing about collaboration. I met Nahum at the Enterprise 2.0 collaboration conference and was immediately captivated by his stories.

Inconvenient ASP.NET Cookies (Waldek Mastykarz)
Recently I’ve been working on a SharePoint solution that was persisting some state information. Originally this solution was relying on Session State but because of some extra configuration complexity that using Session State with SharePoint requires we decided to replace the Session State with cookies. Although both approaches are not exactly the same they were both sufficient in the scope of the solution. And although you might expect no rocket science when working with ASP.NET cookies there are a few things that keeping in mind might save you some painful hours.

A Quick Chat with Richard Riley (The MOSS Show SharePoint Podcast)
While at Tech Ed Africa 2010, I had a quick chat with Richard Riley, a Group Program Manager on the SharePoint team, about how his team goes about putting together all of the great technical content for the SharePoint learning centres, training kits, and more both for external and internal customers. We also chatted about some of Richard’s favourite features in SharePoint 2010.

SharePoint 2010 SDK – Now with More SharePoint Online! (Chris Johnson)
Our fantastic documentation team released an update to the SharePoint SDK today that includes a raft of important things for prospective SharePoint Online developers. In particular is the SharePoint Online General Reference topic. Additionally the SDK is now marked up with “Available in SharePoint Online” tags so you can see if a particular feature is available in SPO.  Not everything is tagged this way during the SPO Beta … so stay tuned as we get more detailed in future releases of the SDK.

Out-of-the-box, SharePoint 2010 provides more calendaring features than ever before but, as you can see in the feature comparison chart below, with Calendar Plus Web Part, users have the added ability to uniquely identify items in various calendar views using color code schemas, whether that data is SharePoint lists/libraries, aggregation of lists, or even SQL data displayed in various views beyond SharePoint 2010, including Quarter and Year views.

Feature Comparison Chart: Bamboo List Rollup Web Part vs. Content Query Web Part in SharePoint 2010 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Out-of-the-box, SharePoint 2010 provides more data mining features than ever before but, as you can see in the feature comparison chart below, with Bamboo List Rollup Web Part, users can take aggregation of lists beyond the confines of a single site collection, same list/library types, column data types and restrictive scoping options.  Including the ability to perform inline editing, run-time filtering/sorting/grouping and ability to export results to Excel, List Rollup Web Part is your one-stop solution to data mining in SharePoint.
