3 Ways SharePoint 2010 Supports eDiscovery (CMS Wire)
A few months ago we outlined the ways that new features of SharePoint 2010 help evolve document management processes. This week, we’re showing you how SharePoint 2010 enhances eDiscovery.

Microsoft Unveils Crowdsourcing For Politicians (InformationWeek)
As part of a strategy to take advantage of the open government initiatives, Microsoft Monday released a new cloud-based crowdsourcing platform for public officials and candidates running for office. Based on Windows Azure, TownHall tries to emulate the experience of being in an actual town hall meeting in a virtual environment, the company said.
Microsoft Signs Off on Final Releases of Two Management Products (ZDNet)
Microsoft has released to manufacturing two of its key system management products: System Center Essentials 2010 and Data Protection Manager 2010. Microsoft officials made the RTM announcement on April 19, the kick-off day of the Microsoft Management Summit. (Nope, I didn’t go to Vegas, after all; I’m covering MMS from afar…)
Why Users are Switching to the Cloud (InfoWorld)
I'm on the road today. I started out presenting a keynote about the intersection of SharePoint and the cloud at the SharepointConference.org event in Baltimore. After that, I hit the rails and headed to New York City to check out the Cloud Computing Expo at the Javits Center (did you know Amtrak trains have Wi-Fi now?).
The Microsoft Windows Phone 7 OS Architecture Explained (Free PC Guides)
Microsoft stated that Windows Phone 7 Operating System is about to be released this year, and although but we’ve seen that they are capable of somewhat misleading us and postpone the release date as they did in the past, this time it seems Microsoft might stick to the plan. In this note, more details regarding the Windows Phone 7 OS architecture were dropped on the Internet today, thanks to guys from tweakers.net, who got in possession of a very relevant document.
Top Three IT Time-Wasters (E-Commerce Times)
It's surprising how many IT organizations complain about a lack of resources while at the same time they waste time and energy supporting broken processes that add little value. Maintaining broken systems deprives working systems of the additional resources they could efficiently use, and it undermines morale. Here are three common breaking points and what to do about them.
Around the Blogosphere
SharePoint, IIS, w3wp.exe, Threads and App Pools… Sometimes, it IS the End User After All! (Cornelius J. van Dyk's SharePoint Brain Dump )
I’ve been helping a good client of mine trouble shoot some performance issues with their SharePoint environment. They have a single MOSS 2007 server under 32 bit, so their 1,000+ active users (not concurrent though) is stretched about as thin as it will go. Recently, the server started having issues where the app pool would get locked up and take all the users down. Now IIS app pools are designed recycle when certain limits are reached so that it would be seamless to the end user. The app pool was set to recycle when memory consumption under the worker process (w3wp.exe) reaches 1 GB or the virtual memory consumption for the app pool reached 1.9 GB. We were not seeing the overlapped recycle taking place automatically because the app pool would get locked up when memory reached around 940 MB. It was not consistent though so it couldn’t be identified readily. We ended up trimming the values back to the eventual 800 MB physical and 1.5 GB virtual memory before triggering a recycle.
Assembly Error in STSADM MigrateUser (AskSharePoint.com)
During a recent migration, we ran into an issue when attempting to migrate users from one domain to another using stsadm migrateuser. Hopefully this will help any others that are getting this strange error. Our environment was a small MOSS 2007 64-bit farm installed with slipstreamed SP2, with the February 2010 cumulative update applied.
Using EditorParts for Dynamic/Data Driven WebPart Editors (SharePoint Blues)
Having worked with SharePoint for a few months now I’ve been overwhelmed by the endless amount of XML I’ve had to type in just to package a simple feature to a deployable wsp. And also by the fact that I’m now spending significantly less time writing c# code that I’ve gotten so accustomed to working with. In fact, there seems to be just one particular thing I’m 100% comfortable with in SharePoint development. Webparts!

Brett Lonsdale on 'Utilizing Roll Up Web Parts in SharePoint 2010' at the SharePoint 2010 Evolution Conference (SharePoint 2010)
At the SharePoint 2010 Evolution Conference Monday afternoon, Brett Lonsdale of Lightning Tools presented a demo of the various roll up Web Parts available out of the box in SharePoint 2010. With just an hour to demo the Content Query Web Part, Data View Web Part, Relevant Documents Web Part, and RSS Viewer Web Part, Brett had his work cut out for him. Nevertheless, Brett deftly fit everything into his presentation without its feeling rushed, and even took a moment to discuss third party rollup options, generously pointing out Bamboo (a Lightning Tools competitor) as a provider of one such option with our SharePoint List Roll Up Web Part, before wrapping up the session with a short Q&A.
Baltimore Calling Too: Notes from the SharePointConference.Org - Day 1 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
This week Bamboo is also attending the SharePoint Conference .Org in Baltimore, Maryland. A group of us are here sharing time covering Bamboo’s tabletop in the vendor area and attending sessions. Daisy Anand and Angela Dillon will team to present a Bamboo led session on project management tomorrow. The conference officially started with a welcome session on Sunday night – which I was unfortunately unable to attend, but things really got underway today as sessions began and the bulk of the attendees arrived. SusQTech, the conference organizers, have done a superb job with this event. Their communications and attention to the “little details” have made for a great experience so far. Many of the conference attendees hail from Associations, the Gov, and non-profits - and it is interesting to hear their unique take on things. As a vendor, having products listed on the GSA schedule and available information about accessibility standards compliance is huge as one might expect.
ERROR: The XYZ Failed on the ABC… (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As an IT Administrator, you become all but familiar with the above text. The error comes and then disappears. You’d love to just claim it as a random fluke but past experiences tell you it isn’t and you’ll know it will be back. So what do you do? You investigate. Problem is where do you start? In the SharePoint world you have log files for just about everything in just about every location on the server.
Summary of the Parts that Make BambooRM Whole: Part III (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Functional Requirements... So far we have discussed how to use the built in discussion board for your projects and how it can be utilized to eliminate mass email exchanges containing information related to your project. We also pointed out that it allows you to maintain your discussion data in one easy to access location. We then talked about how our sample team was able to use the discussion board; you guessed it, to actually discuss the project requested from their customer. After that we showed you how our sample project team was able to take discussion information or items from the discussion and then incorporate them into requirements for their project. Now in this week's blog we are going to create our functional requirements show you some sample functional requirements for the business requirements we now have.
Steve Smith is Joined by Brett Lonsdale, Eric Shupps & Spencer Harbar for the SharePoint 2010 Evolution Conference Keynote (The Bamboo Team Blog)
SharePoint 2010 Evolution Conference organizer Steve Smith took the stage in London this morning to greet attendees, promising "three days of absolute fulfillment and awesomeness." Acknowledging the difficulties that the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano has presented for Conference speakers, attendees, exhibitors and, not least, organizers, Steve and the Combined Knowledge crew have heroically scrambled to reshuffle sessions accordingly. Very few sessions have been canceled (and when they have, they've been replaced by equally solid topics and presenters), and Steve noted that while the flight cancellations have made it impossible for most Americans to get to London, it also meant that there were a number of "top-level [SharePoint] guys" who were already in London, were "unable to leave," and have now been "dragged in with a rope" to present either their own sessions or the sessions of others (from existing slides). Cheers, all!
A Beginner's Guide to SharePoint Vocabulary: Part 4 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I don't know about you, but when I don't understand something, I sort of shut down. Instead of focusing on the subject and trying to break it down into smaller chunks that I can figure out, I let my eyes glaze over and my mind wander to more interesting topics, like what my weekend plans are--or Twinkies. I really like Twinkies. So when I first started using SharePoint, I was pretty intimidated. It seemed like the number of things I could click and modify and add was endless. I didn't understand why people thought SharePoint was useful. I envisioned myself spending all my time modifying Web Parts instead of actually getting work done. Cue eye glaze and thoughts of Twinkies.
