15 Must Have Free Microsoft Downloads (Softpedia)
Microsoft offers a plethora of software that users can download and install without paying a single cent to the company. However, the software giant hasn’t centralized all its free offerings into a single location, a move which would streamline access to the resources it is delivering. That’s why I included below a list with a consistent collection of free software products which can be grabbed free of charge, with the vast majority available through the Microsoft Download Center.

The Cloud Storage Wars: Windows Azure vs. Google (.Net Developers Journal)
So much has happened this month (January 2010) for the cloud storage world. First is the Windows Azure Platform went from public preview to full production. Second is Google Docs opened up  for any file type upload/download, effectively making it a GDrive in the cloud. How would these affect you? This article will compare the two cloud storage offerings from price, speed, usability, service level agreement and to developer support.

Microsoft's Cloud is Hiccuping. Has Anyone Even Noticed? (ZDNet)
Microsoft’s cloud has been hiccuping all week, cutting North American customers off from access to the services included in its Business Productivity Online Suite, which includes Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Office Live Meeting. By checking the logs from Microsoft Online Services Team, it appears that the team was busy yesterday dealing with at least one service outages and several instances of “planned maintenance,” before the issue was resolved, essentially leaving customers with intermittent access. There were issues on Tuesday, as well.

Google Phasing Out Support for IE 6.0, Firefox 2.0, Safari 2.0 (eWeek)
Google says it will cease fully supporting Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 for its Google Docs and Google Sites applications on March 1. This deadline also applies to other older Web browser versions, including Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Apple Safari 2.0 and Google's own Chrome 3.0. The move is part of Google's push to rid the messaging and collaboration world of the dated, insecure IE 6 and put Google Chrome in its place. Chrome has 4.63 percent of the browser market and Google would love to chomp away at IE's 63 percent share.

Around the Blogosphere
Using SharePoint workflows with Business Connectivity Services (BCS) – Sandboxed Workflow Actions (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
In the last post, we covered how to use the out of box SharePoint Workflow activities to work with an External List. In that post, I mentioned that every time you read a column, it will execute both the Read List method (Finder) and the Read Item method (Specific Finder), and that could cause unnecessary calls to your external system. One of the ways to decrease that load on the external system is to get the item once, and store it in a way that you can reuse that data. In this post, we will show how you can implement such a solution using the SPList Object Model to read from the external lists in a Sandboxed Workflow Action. Sandboxed Workflow Actions are code functions that can be used in a declarative workflow designer and called from a declarative workflow. They are written in Visual Studio and uploaded to SharePoint’s Solution Gallery. These actions run in isolation to ensure that the core system process is protected and boundaries respected.

Two Key Roles and Requirements for SharePoint Farm Administration (SharePoint Reviews)
Since Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is an application platform, not just an application, maintaining and managing a SharePoint farm requires many skills. The level of complexity is comparable to SAP, although SharePoint does much more than SAP. The required skills are so broad it’s almost impossible to find them in one person. However, most of what’s required can be found in two roles: System Administrator and SharePoint Development Leader (in many environments, some parts of the System Administrator role can be handled by standard server operation procedures (anti-virus, firewall, etc.).

Social Computing and SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint in Education)
One of the significant improvements in SharePoint 2010 is in the Social Computing section. Whilst I don’t want to contradict myself with my post on SharePoint 2010 and the Lost Generation I do believe that there have been some significant improvements over SharePoint 2007. At the end of the day what we have in SharePoint 2010 is what we have. If I think social computing then my SharePoint expert would be Dan McPherson who owns Zevenseas, a SharePoint consultancy in Holland. I heard him speak last year and have since started to look at ways we can link up with SharePoint for educational use. Last week he was talking with his team at Microsoft SharePoint Connections 2010 and their presentation has become available online. Take a look at what SharePoint 2010 can do for your organisation. If you are short on time you could miss the intro to social computing and start at 17 minutes on the video.

Around Bamboo Nation
Greetings from SharePoint Saturday New York! (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Bamboo has been an enthusiastic supporter of SharePoint Saturday from the get-go, sponsoring, promoting, and presenting sessions in the past, but today's event at the Microsoft Technology Center in New York marked the first SharePoint Saturday that I've been able to attend personally.  If you work with SharePoint in any capacity, from end user to developer to administrator, and you haven't made it to a SharePoint Saturday yet, you owe it to yourself to find a way to get to one.  Oh, and did I mention that admittance to SharePoint Saturdays the world over is always free?  Keep an eye on the SharePoint Saturday home page (or the SharePoint Events listings in our own SharePoint Daily blog) for a regularly updated listing of upcoming SharePoint Saturdays.

This Week in Bamboo (January 17th, 2010 - January 23rd, 2010) (The Bamboo Team Blog)
This Week in Bamboo we released multiple patches using our new Bamboo License 2.6 and Web License Manager 1.2. For latest version of SharePoint Project Management Central (Release 1.6) there are several improvements and critical bug fixes and is a recommended upgrade for all PM Central users. It is important that with our storefront version of SharePoint Knowledge Base Solution Accelerator (Release R1.5) users need to clear IE cache.  And for Tree View Web Part you can now paging, sort when using Lightning Conductor Web Part on the same page. We also fixed the search results for List Search Advanced Web Part when changing Region Setting and the Title column is now in the drop down. Cross List Web Part is updated with German language and we changed button from Close to Save/Cancel for Active Project Health in SharePoint Project Portfolio Dashboard. For more information of the changes, please see details below.

New Faces of Bamboo: Introducing Nicole Flanagan (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As readers of our 2009 Year in Review series will have likely gathered, Bamboo is currently undergoing rapid growth.  Some of our new hires have been with us for a couple of months now, but with new faces appearing in the office seemingly daily in recent weeks, we thought it would be a good idea to introduce the new folks to Bamboo Nation.  You should expect to see many of these new faces beginning to appear regularly here in the Team Blog over the course of the year.
