SharePoint 2010 Enhancements for End Users: SharePoint Workspace and the Offline Experience
Published 09/23 courtesy of Bamboo Solutions Community
We've reached the end of the line with my look at some of the new end user-centric features in SharePoint 2010 as demonstrated by Tom Rizzo in his Overview and Sneak Peek video, but if you've ever had a need to take your SharePoint data offline, this final entry should be a doozy.
Previously known as Groove, and available a desktop application, the renamed and enhanced SharePoint Workspace is now an out-of-the-box feature in SharePoint 2010. SharePoint Workspace provides rich offline functionality with a seamless "sync to computer" feature to synchronize all lists, libraries and even line-of-business (LOB) data from your SharePoint site to your local computer. In many respects, this functionality makes the contents of your SharePoint site not only portable, but also accessible even in situations where you don't have access to network connectivity.
As Tom demonstrates in the video, taking a site offline is as easy as clicking Site Actions -> Sync to Computer ("make a synchronized copy of this site available on your computer" is the instructional copy that's visible in the video). Having clicked Sync to Computer, the image below provides an example of the look and feel of the corresponding Workspace content prepared to take offline:
All of the synched information can be edited while offline, and when you reconnect with your SharePoint environment, the updated information can be automatically synchronized with the SharePoint environment. In his demo, Tom shows the ease of use of the synchronization process, which naturally employs the contextual Ribbon as evidenced throughout SharePoint 2010. Offline users, rejoice!
