SharePoint 2010 Performance Management; Quad-Core Windows Tablets; Whos Speaking at BUILD?
Published 08/29 courtesy of Bamboo Solutions CommunityI'm baaaack. OK, first I have to get a bit of whining out of the way. I take off one week and we have an earthquake, catch the edge of a hurricane and I got a really nasty cold (thanks Emily). I'm starting to think vacations are a bit overrated. So, did I miss anything good? You guys need to help me get caught up. --Chris

The 5 Teams You Need for Effective SharePoint Governance (CMSWire)
In this article, I give you some practical structure and tactics you can use to achieve effective SharePoint governance. In football, how effective and successful will a team be at winning if it doesn’t have structured sub-teams? Imagine a football team with no defensive line, offensive line or special teams. What if sometimes the quarterback played the role of wide receiver, linebacker or kicker? How effective would that team be? What if the team had no planned plays, never practiced those plays and had no coaches or clear direction?
SharePoint 2010 Performance Management Load Gets Heavier (SearchContentManagement)
It’s been said many times: SharePoint is a complex platform. When Microsoft released SharePoint 2010, management complexity increased further with the addition of service applications, more flexible SharePoint deployment models, new features like Office Web Apps and expanded data-handling capabilities (for example, increased list item limits and remote storage of binary large objects, or blobs). As a result, systems administrators need to be even more vigilant in maintaining their SharePoint farms to ensure acceptable performance.
IM, SharePoint Tools will Edge Out Email, CIOs say (NetworkWorld)
Email's popularity is waning, and within five years it could be eclipsed by other communication tools favored by employees, new research suggests. Robert Half Technology polled 1,400 CIOs and asked if they think real-time workplace communication tools -- such as instant messaging, SharePoint and Yammer -- will become more or less popular than email among employees. More than half bet on the newcomers.
Office 365 and Cloud Messaging: Hedging Your Bets (WindowsITPro)
When Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer famously said, "We're all in," when asked about Microsoft's commitment to cloud services, it was a revealing metaphor. In poker, when you go all in, you're betting everything you have. If you lose that hand, you're done. Microsoft, of course, isn't abandoning its on-premises software, nor do I expect the company to do so as long as customers want such offerings—and that's likely to be for a very long time, given how many customers are still running long-dead products such as Windows 2000 and Novell GroupWise.
Microsoft's BUILD: Who's on the Speaker List? (ZDNet)
In two weeks, starting on September 13, Microsoft is finally slated (pun intended) to take more wraps off Windows 8 at its Build conference. As readers of this blog know all too well, Microsoft still has not published a list of sessions or speakers for the conference, and unceremoniously dropped its pre-conference plans — after a number of folks already had made travel arrangements for Anaheim, Calif.
Microsoft Shows Off a 'Quad-Core' Windows Tablet (NetworkWorld)
Has Microsoft not learned there are no secrets left on the planet? It's either that or they sure know how to tease. TechEd New Zealand has been taking place this past week and while our Kiwi friends are getting a good education, it's also been a spoiler-fest for what's coming at the big BUILD conference next month.
Forrester Names 4 Leading Enterprise Social Platforms (InformationWeek)
Forrester Research named IBM, Jive Software, Telligent, and NewsGator as the leaders in its first ranking of enterprise social software platforms. Jive Software, which this week filed for an initial public offering, got the highest overall score. However, the lead author, Forrester analyst Rob Koplowitz, said it's not a straight ranking but called it a "measurement of breadth of capabilities." The catch is that features considered essential to one enterprise can be irrelevant to another, he said.

Transforming Your Enterprise Business (Arpan Shah's Blog)
One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity I have to talk with our partners. The Microsoft Project partner ecosystem is dedicated, vast and highly skilled! They provide a great deal of insight on deployment, adoption and overall feedback which is important to us for business and product planning. With many of our Project partners’ businesses doing really well given the industry Project Management demand, it gives us an opportunity to talk about the future. A common discussion topic is how partners should think about their business over the next few years with the explosion of devices, democratization of IT, shift to the cloud and constant desire for change and innovation with tight budgets. These factors aren’t Project or Microsoft specific rather they are relevant to the software industry.
Displaying PDF Files in Office 365 SharePoint Online Sites (Ian's SharePoint Blog)
If you have used SharePoint 2010 to store documents in a document library you will know that users are prompted to download and save them rather than just opening in the default PDF reader application. This annoying behaviour can be change by disabling Strict Browser File Handling in the web application general settings (Permissive mode). Why a farm administrator can't specify the extensions that are "safe" we will probably never know. [Update: you can specify individual extensions via Windows PowerShell, but not on Office 365 (thanks Nick).
