SharePoint is 'Facebook for the Enterprise' (BetaNews)
Make no mistake. Microsoft's big development push this week is around Windows, but Office and supporting software, such as SharePoint, are more important at the bottom line. During today's Microsoft Financial Analyst Meeting, COO Kevin Turner said that the Business division "is 32 percent of the company". Windows is 27 percent and Server and Tools is 24 percent. Microsoft typically holds FAM during July, within weeks of closing its fiscal year on June 30. But this year Ballmer and his team delayed the annual event until this week's BUILD developer conference. That's smart, because Wall Street analysts have a chance to see some new Microsoft's products, Windows 8 in particular.
Three Steps to Building a SharePoint 2010 Business Case (SearchContentManagement)
SharePoint, it seems, is everywhere. Organizations of all sizes are looking to implement SharePoint 2010 as a foundation for everything from document management initiatives to public-facing websites. Given the functionality that SharePoint provides, you’d think it would be easy to justify its use across the enterprise. However, without the right approach, this enterprise solution can quickly become an enterprise nightmare.
BUILD 2011: Ballmer - 'We Have a Long Way to Go with Windows 8' (ReadWriteEnterprise)
In a closing word to developers at the Build 2011 conference in Anaheim late this morning, a noticeably slimmer Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer expressed a more subdued level of enthusiasm than we've seen from him in the past - still upbeat, but more measured, perhaps more quietly confident. In this more enlightened state, he expressed a degree of candidness about the initial reaction to the Windows 8 developer preview. "It's clear we have a long way to go, still, with Windows 8. We've been gratified, certainly, by the reactions and the interests," the CEO began his talk to developers this morning. He noted about 500,000 downloads of the Developer Preview build, released yesterday, have been registered thus far.
IE10 Wakes to the Web--and to Windows (CNET)
IE9 left no doubt that Microsoft understood the importance of supporting modern Web standards. But IE10, updated yesterday with the third platform preview, is the vehicle delivering much of that support. Microsoft fleshed out IE10's impressive list of new technologies at Microsoft's Build conference for developers. New items on the list such as Web Workers, Web Sockets, 3D Transforms, Application Cache, and IndexedDB are music to the ears of many Web developers who want to make rich, interactive Web sites.
Microsoft Pushes Windows Azure Services at BUILD (RedmondMag)
Microsoft outlined some Windows Azure advances today on Day 2 of its Build conference for developers. Satya Nadella, president of Server and Tools Business, made a marketing pitch to independent software vendors (ISVs) during the Build keynote address, arguing that ISVs need a rich portfolio of storage "across blobs, tables and full relational capabilities" to handle the complexity of data. Windows Azure, Microsoft's cloud-based platform, along with SQL Azure, provides the platform for the data services that ISVs require, he claimed.
Steve Ballmer: We are "Reimagining Microsoft" (Ars Technica)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer today said the overhaul of Windows is part of a larger goal to transform the whole company, making every one of its businesses optimized for new hardware form factors and cloud services. The Windows 8 user interface is a dramatic change from Windows 7, featuring Microsoft’s Metro-style tiles and optimization for both traditional PCs and touchscreen tablets. Windows Server 8, now available in a developer preview, is also being upgraded to support the shift from local resources to cloud computing, featuring greater integration with Windows Azure. In all, Ballmer counted seven Microsoft businesses—Windows, Phone, Xbox, Azure, Office, Bing, and Dynamics—and said all of them “are moving to the cloud as their fundamental business model.”

Understanding the SharePoint Hierarchy (SharePoint 365)
One of the most confusing subjects for me to grasp early on was understanding the SharePoint hierarchy. I couldn’t tell a web application from a site collection. It confused me to no end. Well, after much study it seems rather simple now! Here’s a diagram with a short explanation. At the top of the hierarchy are server farms. This encompasses all the physical servers that comprise your SP installation. It may consist of one server or twenty. When you run the SP configuration wizard after installing MOSS/WSS you either create a new server farm or connect to an existing one. It’s done once.
The OCR Behind SharePoint, SalesForce and More (AIIM)
Being able to easily search, access, store and share information is a vital part of any office workflow. As an organization grows, so does their content. This ultimately results in documents being scattered across departments or business units, in servers or in files. Complicating this further is the fact that searching and accessing documents takes time, which is only becoming less abundant, and sharing information often becomes an excruciating task.
Unregistering Custom Record Declaration Handlers (John F. Holliday)
As you know, using the SharePoint 2010 server object model, you can install your own custom record declaration handlers. Didn’t know that? Oh? You mean you haven’t already setup your site to keep track of every time a record is declared or undeclared? Well, you’re in for a treat! But you’ll have a wait a bit, ’cause I’m busy building demos for my upcoming sessions at the Great SharePoint Conference of 2011. After that, I’ll be posting a series of articles that will go into custom record declaration handlers in greater detail.
Silos? Not Allowed Here! (SharePointEduTech)
I live in Iowa, this is America’s heartland. My best friend’s father farms 300 acres of the richest corn fields in the Midwest, I know all about farms, tractors, and yes, silos. Well agricultural silos anyway. When I first heard the term applied to business intelligence, I have to admit I wasn’t entirely sure what that could possibly mean. My immediate knowledge of silos was the danger they presented farmers should they fall in at harvest and drown in the grain, so I have to admit it took me a few years of working with SharePoint before I could fully grasp the meaning of a “silo mentality.”
Basic Page Document Libraries Upgraded to SharePoint 2010 and an Error message: “Cannot save your changes” (The SharePoint Swiss Army Knife)
This one was quite an anomaly so I thought I’d share… Scenario: I have a SharePoint sub-site with multiple Document Libraries created with the Basic Page Document Template. These libraries were upgraded from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010. Users with Full Control were able to modify/edit the pages just fine but users with Contributor rights were not able to save changes made to existing content pages. When Contributors tried to save changes made with the WYSIWYG editor, which seems to be a variation of the Content Editor Web Part, they get an browser popup error message that says “Cannot save your changes“.

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: How to Activate a Dropdown Menu in SharePoint 2010 Sites (SharePoint 2010)
SharePoint 2010 sites can display dropdown menus in the tabbed navigation across the top of the page. Shown within dropdown menus are a nest of sites, and the dropdown method of making links available helps us to organize sites cleanly. In this article, we will take a look at how to activate the dropdown menu in SharePoint 2010 sites. Challenge: Unfortunately, activating dropdown menu functionality isn't as easy as simply checking a checkbox; rather, everything must be set up the right way. If you want your SharePoint 2010 site to show dropdown menus, walk through the following steps and make sure that the following is true in all cases:
