SharePoint is Going Away; GSA Moves All Email to the Cloud; Microsoft - A Company In Decline?

Published 07/27 courtesy of Bamboo Solutions Community

Rumor has it that SharePoint is going away. If you don't buy into that idea and are in Chicago today for SharePoint Fest, stop by the Bamboo booth and say Hi to Matt. If you don't have any SharePoint questions, Matt is always happy to grab a pizza and talk about the latest episode of "90210". Most of us refuse to talk 90210 with him, so it would make his day if you did.   --Chris

SharePoint in the Cloud (SYS-CON Media)
As customers continue their march to the cloud we have heard from a large number who want to use SharePoint Server in the cloud. Two major concerns that show up frequently are migration of existing custom deployments and data security. These organizations have spent years customizing their SharePoint deployments so they work just right in their environment, and moving to the cloud is a daunting proposition. Consider a scenario where a customer has deployed SharePoint and each department has its own intranet and individual sites for employees – the proliferation of these sites across organizations and the customization required has created a situation where customers typically stay away from using the cloud for their existing SharePoint deployments and start from scratch in the cloud.

Why Microsoft Won't Dump Bing (RedmondMag)
Many Microsoft shareholders, employees, partners and customers would like Steve Ballmer to resign (or be ousted) as CEO. Almost as many are agitating for Microsoft to push Bing out of the Redmond nest. To all of those folks, I've got bad news: Ballmer is going nowhere soon, and Microsoft isn't decoupling the Online Services Division (OSD) -- the business unit that includes Bing and online advertising -- from the rest of the company.

First Windows "Mango" Phone Unveiled (PCWorld)
The first smartphone based on the new "Mango" edition of Microsoft's Windows Phone platform was unveiled on Wednesday in Tokyo. The phone is the first of several handsets due over the next few months, that Microsoft hopes will signal its return to the smartphone market as a serious player. (Video of the new phone and its launch is available on YouTube.) If that wish sounds familiar, it is. This time last year the company was hoping the first version of the Windows Phone 7 would accomplish the same thing. But that didn't happen.

GSA Moves All 17,000 Employee Email Accounts to the Cloud (NextGov)
Contractors say all 17,000 General Services Administration employees have successfully signed on to a professional version of Gmail. The milestone makes GSA the first of roughly 15 agencies to move to cloud-based email. GSA completed its conversion from IBM's Lotus Notes software to Google Apps for Government, an online tool that employees can access anywhere on any device. Previously, employees needed to log on to the agency network to read email, share documents and chat.

Microsoft Launches Visual Studio LightSwitch (eWeek)
Microsoft has released its latest development tool, Visual Studio LightSwitch, to Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers. Simply put, LightSwitch is a new tool aimed at business application developers who may not be versed in the art of programming. Microsoft says LightSwitch is the simplest way to build business applications for the cloud and the desktop. Users can take their LightSwitch applications to the cloud by publishing to Windows Azure directly from the LightSwitch integrated development environment (IDE).

Trusting Microsoft (for the First Time) To Unify an Ecosystem (Redmond Channel Partner)
One of the most-quoted statements from Andy Lees' keynote earlier this month at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference came when he said a Microsoft tablet wouldn't be based on Windows Phone. The president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division said, "Now, a lot of people have asked me, are we going to produce a phone that is a tablet? You know, are we going to use Windows Phone 7 to produce tablets? Well, that is in conflict with this strategy."

Microsoft-Watchers See A Company In Decline (InformationWeek)
Today at BYTE it wasn't all Google+, Apple OS X Lion and Ubuntu talk. Rather, we've been debating a question that--in all my years covering tech, beginning as a beat reporter on Microsoft--was one I thought I'd never hear. Is Windows dying? And then, riffing off of that, the discussion moved to the Windows Phone 7 update code-named Mango, due this fall. And then it migrated to the fate of Microsoft in general, given the steady erosion of Redmond's influence in a now tablet- and mobile-focused world.

Why HTML5 is the New Java (TechCentral)
Wora is an acronym coined by Sun Microsystems more than a decade ago to describe the benefits of a new programming language it created called Java. At the time, every compiled programming language needed to be recompiled on every platform you wanted to run it on, often with particular fixes to handle the idiosyncrasies of different operating systems. Java was different in that it had the benefits of a compiled language, but thanks to the cross-platform “virtual machine” it ran on, it could run anywhere without recompilation or tweaking.

When Should You Bring in End Users? (AIIM)
There are many topics that can act as a lightning rod in a conversation. Religion. Politics. Tastes great, less filling. People dig in, want to be heard, and can talk on and on for hours. The same is true for technology circles. For example: when should you bring in the end users for their perspective on your SharePoint strategy?

Silverlight in SharePoint: The Silverlight Client Object Model (SharePoint Magazine)
In this third part of the series, I will build a Silverlight application that communicates with SharePoint to render data that is stored within a SharePoint list. The Silverlight app will again be hosted within the out-of-the-box Silverlight web part that comes with SharePoint 2010. Through this series of articles we will build a SharePoint demo application that allows members to offer their services and accept another service in return. For example, John likes to garden, but he is lousy in the kitchen. Through the application he can offer his services as a gardener. Hanne likes to cook but needs a hand in the garden. She can accept his offer and cook him a delicious meal. All data will be stored in a SharePoint list called Service Offering.

Why You Should Upgrade To SharePoint 2010 (EndUserSharePoint)
Microsoft SharePoint has been around since 2001 and is one of the top business collaboration resources around. However, it wasn’t until the SharePoint 2007 (known as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 or MOSS 2007) release that businesses really started to harness the power of online collaboration. The latest SharePoint 2010 version goes even further and offers sought after services straight out of the box.

SharePoint 2010: PDF Files Cannot be Opened Directly, Only Saved (SharePointDevWiki)
On several occasions I have visited a customer to do some kind of support on their SharePoint 2010 environment. On a few of those occasions, I received complaints questions by employees that they cannot open PDF files from their portal, but have to save those files first. Very annoying… In this post I‘ll explain why and show you a way to solve this problem.

Site Recycle Bin (Service Pack 1 and CodePlex) FAQs (Bill Baer)
Do I need to uninstall the Site Recycle Bin from CodePlex if I plan to use the Site Recycle Bin in Service Pack 1? It depends on what you’re looking for.  The Site Recycle Bin available through CodePlex will capture deleted Site Collections and Sites to disk, Site Recycle Bin in Service Pack 1 copies the Site Collections and Sites to an auxiliary SQL table until they are permanently deleted at which point are managed by Gradual Site Deletion.  Once a Site Collection or site enters this Garbage Collection phase it will be managed by the Site Recycle Bin on CodePlex and copied to disk.  In theory you could have both.  The CodePlex Site Recycle Bin to provide archival and the Site Recycle Bin in Service Pack 1 to provide quick recovery and enable Site Collection administrators to perform self-service restores.

Edit My Profile in a SharePoint 2010 My Site when the My Settings page isn't Editable (SharePoint Blank)
I've been feeling the itch to return to the topic of the SharePoint 2010 My Site, so I spent a little more time actively working on mine today.  In matter of moments, I had tripped across the first noteworthy item when I clicked the My Settings button in the dropdown under my name in the upper right-hand corner of the page:

SharePoint is Going Away (The Bamboo Team Blog)
A full week has passed since I returned from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Los Angeles.  It was a great event, during which I had many, many interesting and productive conversations.  I spent last week digging out of the email and related work that had piled up while I was in L.A.  As the days continue to tick by, I'm realizing that I probably won't have time to write as many blog posts about the event as I'd hoped.  But there's one important observation I feel compelled to broadcast before I get back to business.  This statement is based on what I heard and what I saw from Microsoft at the conference.  I've shared this observation with other attendees who agree with my assessment.  Here it is, as simply and plainly as I can say it: SharePoint is going away.
