SharePoint Isnt Just for IT; Office 365 More than a New Platform; IE10 Preview 2 Available for Testers

Published 06/30 courtesy of Bamboo Solutions Community

Monday is a holiday in the US and the SharePoint Daily office will be closed. To speed this week along I am going to start my weekend early and take tomorrow off as well. To make the weekend even more fun, I am giving all of you the day off work as well. Tell your managers I approved it and they should talk to me if they disagree.    Have a great weekend and I'll see you bright and early on Tuesday.  --Chris

SharePoint Isn't Just for IT (ITBusinessEdge)
It's been about half a year since I wrote about the sometimes slapdash adoption of Microsoft SharePoint, which apparently is often brought into organizations without a clear strategy in mind. My post cited some good advice from Martin White, managing director of consulting company Intranet Focus Ltd and author "The Intranet Management Handbook," who advised creating a strategy document to help determine if SharePoint is the best option for the company intranet and sitting down for a discussion about SharePoint's benefits and possible shortcomings.

Third-Party Add-Ons Popular Among SharePoint Users (Hosted Exchange Community)
Third-party add-ons and integrations are popular with SharePoint users, despite improvements in the content management functionality in the 2010 version of SharePoint, according to the latest AIIM survey. Around 34 percent of organizations are using add-on products for Business Process Management (BPM), workflow, classification, security, back-up and records archive. BPM will be used by more than 75 percent of the surveyed enterprises.

Microsoft Faces New Weighty Responsibilities as VOIP Phone Carrier (eWeek)
Now that Microsoft is buying Skype, new complications have cropped up that its management may never have thought of when it inked the deal a couple of months ago. While Microsoft obviously knew that it was buying a phone company, did the company's lawyers warn it that this would mean working with a whole new set of government agencies from a whole new direction?

Memo to Microsoft: It’s Time for Windows 365 (PCWorld)
With the launch of Office 365, Microsoft has taken another big step towards making sure one of its two superpower products remains relevant in the cloud world. But it begs the question: what is the software giant going to do with its other franchise player in the cloud? In many ways, the introduction of Office 365 leaves the venerable Windows operating system alone in Microsoft's stable of heavy hitters stuck in the old desktop and client-server world. Thus far, Redmond hasn't been talking too much about what the cloud means to Windows. But that doesn't mean there isn't an opportunity to update how businesses procure and manage Windows in a world where companies are more receptive to paying ongoing subscription fees as opposed to upfront capital costs.

How Today’s Cloud Services Foretell a Post-aaS World (GigaOM)
At last week’s Structure conference, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels used his “State of the Cloud” keynote to highlight how cloud computing is evolving beyond its traditional IaaS, PaaS and SaaS layers. “I’m moving away from this picture of a stack with infrastructure on the bottom and platform on top,” he explained, “It’s outdated.”

Microsoft Jazzed About Office 365, But Concerns Remain (PC Magazine)
Today marked the official launch of Office 365 with a New York City event hosted by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. The sultriness of the hot June day did not dampen the obvious enthusiasm Microsoft executives, engineers, and some partners all have for the global release of the product, but not everyone shares this enthusiasm. Real concerns exist for partners over profit, compatibility with Line-of-Business apps, and migrating customers. There is one thing on which we can all agree: Office 365 solidifies that one of the most established technology companies in the world has realized that the computing world is changing and that it must make that transition or die.

Microsoft's Office 365: More than the Delivery of a New Platform (ZDNet)
Microsoft is in a very critical period with their fiscal year ending this week, as my colleague Duncan Jones recently wrote. But today, Steve Ballmer is announcing one of Microsoft’s most important products in the company’s history – Office 365. Sound like an embellishment? It’s not – and it’s because Office 365’s release is not just the launch of a new technical solution for customers, but also a change in the relationship with their customers. Microsoft’s Office 365 is the single biggest change to the Microsoft customer relationship since introduction of Software Assurance and the modern Enterprise Agreement in 2001.

Office 365 vs. Google Apps vs. Zoho (ReadWriteEnterprise)
Today, as expected Office 365 came out of beta. Office 365 is Microsoft's consolidated cloud-services system that combines hosted versions of Exchange Server, SharePoint Server and Lync Server. So how does it hold up to two older offers, Google Apps and Zoho?

Microsoft Delivers IE 10 Preview 2 to Testers (ZDNet)
On June 29, Microsoft made its second preview build of Internet Explorer (IE) 10 available to testers for download. “IE10 Platform Preview 2, the same HTML5 engine seen in the recent public ‘Windows 8; demos, is now available for download,” Microsoft officials blogged on the IE Blog today. The new build is available via this link.

SharePoint Governance - What is it? (EndUserSharePoint)
Governance has become a hot topic in the SharePoint community. In my previous post I explained a few of the compelling reasons why. Now I am going to get into what governance is. In the minds of a lot of people, governance is limited to “Thou shalt nots”. While restricting what people can do on SharePoint can be an integral part of a governance plan, thou shalt not make “Thou shalt nots” the whole story; it shouldn’t be, because if it is, you are missing a lot of valuable and powerful ways to make your SharePoint deployment successful.

5 Myths About SharePoint Records Management (AIIM)
Myth #1: It is too hard to implement “true” Records Management (RM) in SharePoint. Reality:  Microsoft made SharePoint more of a retention tool with an interface that is familiar to SharePoint and IT professionals than an RM solution whose interface is familiar to RM professionals.  “Out of the box” implementations of SharePoint RM require a wide variety of configuration settings, customizations and choices that must be established and maintained by someone who is familiar with both SharePoint systems administration and retention policies.

SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 PowerShell Changes (SharePoint Automation)
As most people know by now, Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 was released to the public today. There’s already been a lot of hype over some of the new capabilities such as the site recycle bin and some folks have documented/demonstrated some of the new PowerShell cmdlets that are available to manage this new feature; but what about all the other new and changed PowerShell cmdlets – there’s a bunch! So, let’s take a look at what is new, and what has changed.

Jason Gallicchio and the End of the SSP in SharePoint 2010 (ITPro)
I cornered Jason Gallicchio (@PrincetonSUG) earlier this year at the SharePoint Saturday Virginia Beach event and asked him what stood out about the latest features in SharePoint, and he was very quick to share his thoughts on the demise of the Shared Service Provider. His comments have been added to the community video series ‘The One Thing You Need to Know About SharePoint 2010.’

Apply Master Page for all Subsites in SharePoint 2010 (SharePointEduTech)
I’m working on SharePoint 2010 for pilot testing for one customer and responsible for designing Intranet sites, making solutions by using out-of the-box SharePoint 2010, such as Collaboration, Document Management, Record Management. etc. When I open the top-level site, it’s really cool. However, the subsites aren’t inherited from the top-level site. Now, I want to share the tip in order to resolve this issue. Firstly, you must active SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure feature to control master pages and page layouts in order to serve your branding. To do this, at the top-level site, click Site Action > Site Settings > Site collection features (under Site Collection Administration).
