Wow! Even though Microsoft did an incredible job with SPC 2011 I am glad that we have a year until the next one. I'm not sure my feet could take another event like that too soon.   -- Dooley

6 SharePoint Security Challenges (InformationWeek)
How many businesses consider security when implementing Microsoft SharePoint? The question is pertinent because the collaboration, file-sharing, and website-building platform is widely used. According to 2009 sales figures, SharePoint already had more than 100 million licensed users and generated $1.3 billion in revenues per year. While Microsoft has yet to update those figures, earlier this year it claimed to be adding 20,000 new SharePoint users per day.

SharePoint by the Numbers (Fierce Content Management)
There is little doubt that Microsoft SharePoint is a tremendously successful product. But the extent of its success was put on full display by Jared Spataro, senior director of product management for SharePoint last week at the SharePoint Conference keynote address in Anaheim, Calif. As Spataro pointed out, SharePoint has been a smash hit for Microsoft breaking through the billion dollars in earnings a few years ago.

Upcoming SP3 for Office 2007, SharePoint 2007 'Likely Final' (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft announced this week that Service Pack 3 for Office 2007 and SharePoint 2007, expected by year's end or sooner, will be "likely final" for both products. A Thursday blog post from the Office Sustained Engineering and Release team said Microsoft expects to release SP3 "within Calendar Q4 2011," but later indicated it could be available as early as sometime this month: "The October 2011 release provides a 6-month window to test and deploy the release prior to exiting mainstream support."

Microsoft 'Inadvertently' Blocks Google's Chrome, as IE Loses Market Share (CRM)
Google issues automatic update to fix the Web browser glitch. Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) share of the global browser market slipped 0.92% in September, and declined 7.5 percentage points since the same time last year. Latest data from Net Applications shows that 22.1% of all Windows 7 devices were running Microsoft's latest IE9 browser. The other top browsers running on Windows 7 machines were IE8 (31.6%), Firefox 6 (13.7%), Chrome 13 (13.1%) and Chrome 14 (5.9%).

Office 365: Weighing up the Pros and Cons (ComputerWorld)
Everyone’s talking about Microsoft’s Office 365, so what’s all the fuss about? Essentially, Microsoft are offering a web-based suite of software and services that provides an impressive array of enterprise level functionality at commodity level pricing. But as with anything else, there are downsides, so before jumping in we suggest CIOs first trial it thoroughly in a production environment.

If You BUILD It: Highlights from Microsoft’s BUILD Conference (DevProConnections)
In September, Microsoft held its long-anticipated BUILD conference. On the block was the entire future of the Microsoft developer ecosystem. Well, that’s a bit overdramatic—but developers who subscribe to the “Redmond Way” certainly had their ears perked to hear what direction Microsoft was going with Windows 8. As usual for a Microsoft conference, a lot of ground was covered, in a lot of topic areas. Microsoft spent a lot of time emphasizing what a rogue band of risk takers they’re being with Windows 8 and its Metro-style apps. In fact, the word “bold” was thrown around with wild abandon by just about every speaker—even more so than the typical frontrunner, “super.” Frankly, I would have preferred to draw my own conclusions about how bold or not bold their actions were based on what they were showing, rather than being constantly reminded by their proclamations.

Windows Azure Tops Cloud Provider League (CloudPro)
Microsoft Windows Azure has come out on top in a new performance league table from Compuware’s cloud community. CloudSleuth takes the top 25 cloud providers over the last 12 months and puts them through half a million tests to gather information on the best response times and quality of service. Despite it not always receiving the best reviews, Windows Azure stormed ahead of its rivals with its Chicago-based offering scoring the best, followed by Google’s App Engine.

Microsoft: Windows 8 Could Use Less Memory Than Windows 7 (PC Magazine)
Microsoft's Windows 8 is aiming to minimize a PC's memory usage through efficient design, allowing it to run on hardware originally designed for Windows 7. In a blog post, Bill Karagounis, the group program manager of the Windows Performance team, said that the group's goal with Windows 8 was always to ship with the same performance requirements as Windows 7. Interestingly, Karagounis wrote that the reason for doing this was to minimize the power consumption used by Windows 8 when running on a tablet.

Microsoft's Windows Phone Chief Talks Momentum (WindowsITPro)
Microsoft president Andy Lees is talking up Windows Phone this week, but he's not limiting his revelations to the recently released Windows Phone 7.5: He says that dual core CPUs and 4G LTE support are coming to the platform, too, probably in 2012. First, of course, we need to get Windows Phone 7.5 to market. Lees says that we can expect new handsets based on Windows Phone 7.5 to appear throughout the rest of the year, including more affordable models that will retail for well under $100.

Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2011–Day 1 (C5 Insight)
The first day started with the big keynote with all of the about 7500 attendees!  That’s a lot of people lovin’ some SharePoint in one place!  Well, let me back up.  On my way into the convention center for breakfast before the keynote, I noticed there was all this noise outside.  Turns out a software vendor and SharePoint competitor called Huddle had hired a marching band to play a few tunes right outside the conference and march through.  In my opinion, quite childish.  Anyway, on the good stuff …

My SPC11 so far… (SharePointEduTech)
It’s been a great conference so far! Last night’s welcome reception went by super fast as I was helping out NBSP (www.nothingbutsharepoint.com) with the handing out of T-shirts with the personalized twitter handles on the back. It was a great time to meet some new people and put real faces to twitter names. It’s been a great community initiative and many of those who did not sign-up for a shirt were hugely disappointed. It felt a little like a guerilla marketing scheme and I know some of the sponsors were hugely intrigued by the tactic. Was also pleased to use Jeremy Thake’s build conference give-away Windows 8 Samsung tablet…

The One Quiet Place at SPC11 (SharePointEduTech)
So here we are at SPC11 and it’s every bit as wonderful and hectic as we hoped!  While dodging free shirts and sodas and shaking hands with old friends and making new, SharePoint is in the air! If you need a quiet moment to tweet or blog or blog about tweeting, come down to Fpweb.net’s Bean Bag Lounge!  It’s located on Level 1 by Section D.  Walking out of the main conference hall, turn right and keep walking till you hit the escalator and you’ve found me.

Around Bamboo Nation
Greetings from Anaheim & SharePoint Conference 2011! (The Bamboo Team Blog)
SPC 2011 officially opened for business this evening with a three-hour opening reception in the Exhibit Hall which found conference attendees flooding Hall B for food, drinks, and sampling the wares of a veritable universe of SharePoint vendors orbiting around the Microsoft mothership.  Debuting an all-new, all-different Bamboo booth for SPC has become a tradition, and we're especially proud of the results this year, so stop by booth #339 and see it for yourself.  While you're in the booth, don't forget to pick up one of our limited edition SPC 2011 t-shirts, and ask for a demo of one of our industry-leading SharePoint solutions ... including a very special new product that we'll be announcing  early tomorrow (Monday) morning.  We've brought an all-star team to Anaheim, and we're looking forward to talking SharePoint with you!

SPC 2011, Bamboo, and the Promise of Instant SharePoint Gratification (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Better late than never, sports fans - your humble scribe survived every conspiracy the airline industry could invent to keep him away from this year's SPC, but here I am in the world's largest day care center bouncing my way through cartoon characters, Snow White costumes, and the rest of the fantasy-land ensemble. (I just realized I can use this same intro if SPC ever makes its way to D.C.)

Jared Spataro Hosts the SPC 2011 Keynote on 'Productivity Delivered' ... and Announces SPC 2012 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Keenan Newton, aka DJ Kameleon, of the Microsoft SharePoint Product Group warmed up the audience for this morning's keynote in high style, pumping up the crowd (and the kicks) with his high-energy mix of remixed club bangers.  A most unexpected, and yet highly effective "pre-show" display to kick off the SPC keynote.  Kudos! With the capacity crowd suitably warmed up, Senior Director of SharePoint Product Management Jared Spataro took the stage to welcome attendees, introducing himself as our host for the keynote, and for the week.  Explaining that the "theme for the conference is productivity delivered," Jared mentioned that 7,500 attendees were in attendance, and said that with 125 million SharePoint licenses held by more than 65 million customers, "In short, SharePoint is on fire ... and that is due to you, and your work."

SPC11 Keynote: Jeff Teper on the 3 Guiding Principles Shaping SharePoint (The Bamboo Team Blog)
This morning at the SPC, Jeff Teper delivered his keynote on the three guiding principles that have shaped, and will continue to shape the development of SharePoint.  Jeff announced early on that it was his wish that all SPC attendees "get the most out of this week so that you never say 'I didn't know SharePoint could do that.'"  The three principles Jeff spoke of were redefining collaboration, unleashing the partner / developer ecosystem, and building a world-class platform.

SPC11 Keynote: Kurt DelBene on the Future of Productivity & the Value of the Cloud (The Bamboo Team Blog)
During this morning's SPC keynote, the President of Microsoft Office, Kurt DelBene presented his vision of the future of productivity, as well as the value of the cloud for customers.  Beginning by identifying some of the trends that drive the business, Kurt allowed that the nature of the workforce is changing (and is multigenerational), and that social software, the consumerization of IT, increasing support for remote work, and other trends directly affect Microsoft's approach to SharePoint development and innovation.

SPC 2011 Bamboo Customer Appreciation Party: We've Come a Long Way (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I've been fortunate enough to be a part of Bamboo for over six years now, so I have some pretty good memories of events from "back in the day."  Back in 2006, when Bamboo first began to hit the trade show circuit on a regular basis, we mostly went to build brand awareness and to let people know that we sold SharePoint products, not products made from bamboo!  The hotels weren't as nice, the customers weren't as plentiful, and we certainly couldn't say we were the "leading provider of Solutions for SharePoint" - we were just excited to be part of a new and fast-growing market.  Fast-forward five years to 2011, and we're far from being the new kid on the block.  In fact, if you don't mind me saying, I'd say we're one of the more recognized companies in the SharePoint space, period.  Tonight that belief was solidified when, in the midst of an incredibly busy SPC, with many competing evening events and parties from which to choose, Bamboo hosted a spectacularly successful customer event at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney.  There were no grand prizes, and no rides - just drinks and snacks with the Bamboo team, and a chance to talk with other companies using SharePoint.

Microsoft Updates
Accessing SharePoint 2010 Data with the Silverlight Client Object Model (MSDN)
With each release of Microsoft SharePoint, developers ask for additional web services to simplify reading and writing SharePoint site data from custom code that is not on the server that is running SharePoint. Instead of building more and more web services, Microsoft introduced in SharePoint 2010 the client object model, which contains a familiar subset of frequently used objects. The client object model is very similar to the SharePoint server-side object model. This SharePoint Visual How To demonstrates how to use the SharePoint 2010 Silverlight client object model.
