How do they get data for Indoor Google Maps? For some reason I am imagining the Google Streetview camera/antenna thingy attached to a Segway rolling through all the local malls.   -  Dooley

We Can Live in Our Inbox and Have SharePoint Too (CMSWire)
I know that for most the idea of getting rid of their inbox for good is simply a pipe dream (it's certainly my pipe dream). But until that dream comes to fruition we need to learn how to make that inbox more useful. For those who also use SharePoint in their organization, harmon.ie offers a tool to do just that. And they have the stats to back it up. Taking the SharePoint User Challenge: The SharePoint User Challenge is something that harmon.ie has done for the last couple of years. It's like contest that gets users to run through some tests to see how much faster they can get information into and out SharePoint from their email as opposed to directly using SharePoint.

Demystifying Microsoft SharePoint in the Cloud (Talkin' Cloud)
It seems you can’t turn around without learning about a new “cloud” service these days. While I think it is very exciting to more of these “commodity based” compute services showing up – it is also breeding a lot of misinformation. I don’t think that this is necessarily meant to mislead – but in the lack of any textbook definition – everyone creates their own. To simplify the concept and definition of “SharePoint in the Cloud”, we can define “cloud” to mean that SharePoint is running on a server which isn’t located in your own datacenter.

Office 365 'Momentum' Announcement Met With Skepticism (PCWorld)
Microsoft's declaration this week that Office 365 is enjoying unprecedented levels of sales success didn't fully convince some industry experts who were expecting the company to back up its claims with more concrete figures and who feel it's too early for a victory lap. Office 365, a cloud collaboration and communication suite for organizations launched in June, is selling eight times faster than its predecessor, the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), and is on track to become one of the company's fastest-growing products ever, Microsoft said on Tuesday. Still, IDC analyst Melissa Webster was left wanting more specific data about Office 365's performance on the market.

The Public Windows 8 Beta Will be Released in Late February (The Next Web)
Sources close to Microsoft have informed TNW that the public Windows 8 beta will be released in late February of 2012. The timing of the public beta launch has been the subject of much debate in the technology community. It is expected that Windows 8 will be released in 2012, but the exact expected date for the completion and shipping of the forthcoming operating system remains undisclosed. However, knowing the release time frame of the beta itself allows us to better project when the work should be done on the Windows 8 project.

Microsoft Lync Showing Growth (RedmondMag)
Microsoft's newest unified communications offering is showing some gains after being on the market for one year, with partners aiding in the cause. Today represents the one-year birthday of Microsoft Lync Server, according to Derek Burney, corporate vice president for Microsoft Lync and Microsoft Office Data. The Lync product, which succeeds Office Communication Server 2007 R2, has shown 25 percent growth at Microsoft, he said. Burney fielded questions about Lync, SharePoint, Office 365 and other such matters at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference today (audio recording here).

Test Before You Tread (On a Cloud) (CloudPro)
In much the same way as most of us plug in a new electrical device without reading the instruction booklet, it would appear that too many cloud applications are being deployed without a thorough pre-analysis and testing period. Microsoft has been vocal on this subject of late, logically pointing to its ‘Local Azure’ emulator, which exists as part of the Windows Azure SDK. This service is designed to enable software programmers to test on their machine, rather than having to deploy every build to the cloud for testing.

What’s New in SharePoint Online: November 2011 Update (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Our first update to SharePoint Online (SPO) since the launch of Office 365 (O365) became generally available on June 28, 2011 is now complete worldwide. We thought it would be a good time to share information about the new features and fixes available as part of this service update. On a broad level, this update enables greater reach to both people and external data, while at the same time increasing the number of supported devices and Web browsers. We also added some self-management recovery capabilities. But there’s a lot more, too.

Content Organizer: iCustomRouter Pending State Issue (The SharePoint Guys)
The Content Organizer in SharePoint 2010 is a Feature that enables the routing of content to defined destinations such as SharePoint libraries, folders or other Content Organizer managed sites. It achieves this by analysing the items content type/metadata information and then matching that with a set of rules.  If it finds a matching rule the item will be moved to the defined destination. In practice, it works by information being deposited into an automatically provisioned document library, called the Drop Off library.  Once content appears here, it can be automatically routed to an appropriate location by the use of the managed rules. This is an evolution of functionality that was apparent in MOSS 2007 and is available across the SharePoint estate, not just in the Record Centre template.

Obama Orders Agencies to Improve Records Management Policies (John F. Holliday)
Looks like things are heating up in the government sector around ECM/RM.  Should make for an interesting first quarter. Reposted from Federal Times… Agencies must deliver plans for modernizing their records management policies by late March, President Obama said in a Monday memorandum.

Parent-child-grandchild Relationship in SharePoint 2010 Lists with JavaScript Only (EndUserSharePoint)
I got this request: I am new to SharePoint and have been struggling with steep learning curve and would really appreciate your help… I created a parent-child-grandchild relation where I inserted a related view in the parent’s dispform to show all children and also in the child’s dispform to show all grandchildren. I’ve also followed http://geekswithblogs.net/SoYouKnow/archive/2010/12/16/creating-a-SharePoint-parentchild-list-relationshipndash-SharePoint-2010-edition.aspx to set the parent’s ID on the child’s newform using JavaScript but I need to take it a step further. In the child’s newform I need to retrieve the parent list’s 2nd field and use that value to build a dynamic drop down field in the child’s newform. The field items in the drop down preferably to be pulled from another list for the ease of maintenance but hard coding is also acceptable. This is probably a no-brainer for you so I hope you wouldn’t mind spending some time on it and I will make sure some donation is made . Thank you so much!

Deploying Branding Solutions for SharePoint 2010 Sites Using Sandboxed Solutions (MSDN)

This article describes a best practice for creating sandbox-compatible branding solutions by using custom master pages, cascading style sheets (CSS files), and images that can be deployed to SharePoint 2010 farms that are running either SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010.
