Microsoft Warns Of SharePoint Zero-Day Flaw (ChannelWeb)
Microsoft issued an advisory Thursday warning users of a cross-site scripting, zero-day flaw in SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint Services 3.0. Microsoft said that the vulnerability opens the door for hackers to launch elevation of privilege attacks within the SharePoint site -- as opposed to an elevation of privilege attack within the workstation or server environment -- but didn't provide details on other possible types of attacks, or the severity and implications of the vulnerability.

Locating Documents in a SharePoint Library (RedmondMag)
With SharePoint Server 2010 coming out this month, Microsoft will be talking up its new search and enterprise content-management capabilities. Nevertheless, if you're like many enterprises, you'll be grappling with SharePoint Server 2007 for the foreseeable future before making the leap. Although Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 offers a variety of different capabilities, it seems to be used most often in the real world as a document repository. And, as with any other type of document repository, a SharePoint document library can become cluttered, which often makes searching for specific documents a cumbersome process.

10 SharePoint Deployment Challenges (TechRepublic)
SharePoint is one of the most flexible server applications available today. But because of its highly dynamic nature, a SharePoint deployment can quickly get out of hand. Here are some of the most common challenges in managing a SharePoint deployment.

What's Ahead for Office 2010? (PCWorld)
The big trend for applications in 2010 can be summed up in one word: collaboration. Nowadays, it's not enough for an app to help workers do their job; apps must also let workers work with each other and easily share information. Microsoft has clearly gotten the message, as Office 2010 will provide a big boost in collaboration abilities.

HP Drops Windows 7 from Slate Tablet (NetworkWorld)
It was made public to the world by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer himself but an unconfirmed report now says that HP is ditching Windows 7 from its high-profile but unreleased Slate tablet computer.

Windows Phone 7: A Good Bet? (Redmond Mag)
Microsoft is taking a lot of risks with its forthcoming Windows Phone 7 platform. To be fair, the 'Softies had little choice. Windows Mobile has steadily lost significant market share to the point where it's no longer a major player in the overall market for smartphones. The question is no longer whether Microsoft should've embarked on a "Photon" reset -- which officials acknowledge the company did a year ago, when it went back to the drawing board with the coming version of the Microsoft mobile platform. Instead, the real question is whether Microsoft has made the right bets in the mobile space.

Microsoft's Cloud Plan: What's In It For You? (InformationWeek)
Microsoft's cloud computing strategy is a tale of two clouds. There are its popular software-as-a-service offerings: SharePoint, Exchange, Dynamics CRM, and the soon-to-be-released new Web version of Office 2010. And there's Microsoft's emerging platform as a service, Azure.

Correlation Ids in SharePoint 2010 (Bill Baer)
SharePoint 2010 provides the administrator a number of improvements to facilitate rapid problem identification and resolution.  Among these is the implementation of Correlation Ids.  Correlation Ids are GUIDs assigned to events which transpire during the lifecycle of a resource request.  As problems occur, the Correlation Id is commonly surfaced within the context of an error when presented to the person initiating the request or through the Developer Dashboard.

Introduction to System Filters (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
Filters are used by Microsoft Business Connectivity Service (BCS) to give values to input parameters while invoking a Method on the External System (LobSystem). But there could be some parameters whose values should be provided by the system (example: username, password) and not from the user. Filters that provide values to these input parameters are called System Filters.

Site Directory in SharePoint Server 2010 (Bill Baer)
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 provided a Site Directory that was commonly used to “catalog” the collection of sites within a server farm environment, most commonly, organizations used categories to isolate like or related site collections and the built-in provisioning callback to ensure site collections were listed in the Site Directory on creation.

Discovering Who Has Access to SharePoint 2010 Securable Objects (SharePoint Automation)
I've talked on several occasions about how we can easily use the SharePoint 2010 object model (OM) to discover who has access to a securable object (SPWeb, SPList, or SPListItem) and the fact that we can use the same mechanisms within PowerShell to create useful security/audit reports. On some of those occasions I've shown a version of a PowerShell script which gives you a dump to the screen or a text file of every securable object and who has access to it and how they were given access to it - today I'd like to share a new version of that script.

Microsoft Updates
Some pages fail to render properly after a large number of crawls in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site (Microsoft Support)
After a large number of crawls in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, the total success count, error count and warning count numbers for a specific content source will be very large. This may cause an arithmetic overflow, and then it will cause the pages to fail to render properly. Specifically, the Crawl Log Administration pages and the Edit Content Source page are the affected ones. This issue is dependent on the number of items being crawled as well.
