Prolific SharePoint Sites Undermine Governance (Internet.com)
Business teams find collaborative tools such as Microsoft’s SharePoint invaluable for tasks such as sharing documents and ideas, maintaining version control of work product, and creating everything from new products to document workflows. However, as we saw with the exponential growth of email in the early 2000s, in the absence of sound policies and controls to enforce those policies new productivity tools can quickly grow out of control.

Yes, Microsoft is Buying Skype (CNN)
So much for that Skype IPO. Fortune has confirmed that Microsoft has agreed to buy the voice-over-Internet company for $8.5 billion, including the assumption of debt. Expect a formal announcement within the next hour. There had been reports last week that Skype was in acquisition or partnership talks with both Microsoft and Facebook. Skype will become a new business unit within Microsoft, to be run by current Skype CEO Tony Bates. He will report directly to Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer.

Microsoft Office Live Hit by 'Intermittent' Access Issues (PC Magazine)
Buckle up, because there's turbulence in the cloud. With its transition to Office 365, Microsoft has said that its soon-to-be-grounded Office Live service has struggled with access for its small business customers. "This past week some Office Live Small Business customers may have experienced intermittent access to their accounts and Web sites," product manager Steve Brown wrote in a blog post. "The issue has been resolved and the service is now functioning normally. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience."

Microsoft Brings Azure Tools to iOS Developers (ZDNet)
In its quest to get developers on Apple's iOS platform more friendly with Microsoft technologies Microsoft this morning released a new toolkit that helps developers integrate the company's Azure platform into the guts of iOS applications. The open-source kit, which Microsoft has posted to Github, helps iOS developers build Windows Azure integration into applications at a very low level. Microsoft says this works on both the iPhone and the iPad, giving applications a way to plug into data and notifications from services running on Azure.

How We Moved Almost Everything to the Cloud: 5 Lessons (CIO)
Companies that move to the cloud have a whole host of decisions, one of the first being whether to develop their own software on top of a cloud infrastructure or to attempt to customize an existing cloud service. Aquent, a global staffing firm specializing in design and marketing professionals, decided to port its own back-office system in 2010, after successfully moving other information systems to the cloud. The company had already made the most obvious cloud choices, moving its e-mail system to Google (GOOG) and it phone system to a voice-over-IP service in early 2010, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in the process.

Six Content Must-Haves For Social Productivity (Manufacturing Business Technology)
One of the major challenge IT staffs face when seeking to implement social productivity tools is the virtual “mudball” of enterprise information that needs to be clearly sorted before successfully deploying any tools or platforms on top of it.

Customization and Branding Options in SharePoint 2010 (GetThePoint)
Earlier this year, I gave a webcast presentation to our Office 365 Beta users on what they could do with their SharePoint Online sites. The webcast, in particular, focused on design and branding options; in other words, how you change the look and feel of a SharePoint site so that it looks more like your business and less like SharePoint. The discussion also touched briefly on changing the user experience in SharePoint so that sites are easier to use and navigate.

SP 2010: Developing for Performance part 7 - Crunching Those Scripts (Tobias Zimmergren's thoughts on development)
This article is a bit shorter than the others and will only cover the concept of crunching your script files in your projects. The reasoning behind a crunched file is to save on transfer-bytes between the client and server.

Custom Session Configuration for Managing SharePoint 2010 with PowerShell Remotely (From The Field)
This here is something that I've been meaning to blog about for quite some time - as I just couldn't find this information anywhere on the Web. There are quite a few good - fairly detailed and practical - blog posts on configuring PowerShell remoting for SharePoint administration, like this one and this one, but none of them ever mention custom session configurations...

A Business Process Map within SharePoint (EndUserSharePoint)
After reading the interesting series by Ben McMann, A Process to Showcase SharePoint’s Value to Your Organization, I kept wondering: why not use SharePoint itself to build the process map?

SharePoint 2010 Social Networking: Part 5c - Browsing Bookmarks and Tags (SharePoint Solutions Team Blog)
Of course, having a community of users bookmarking agging pages and storing that data in the database for the benefit of others (described in Part 5a and Part 5b) is only a good thing if there are well-designed tools for the users to retrieve and sift through the data when they need to find something.  Of the most common approaches for finding information in a database, 1) browsing, and 2) searching are the most familiar for most users.

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Display Visual Representation of SharePoint 2010 Workflow Status with Visio Graphics Service (SharePoint 2010)
SharePoint 2010 offers a ton of new features that I think everyone who is familiar with SharePoint is getting to know more and more. One of the features that people are very interested in is called Visio Graphics Service. This is a SharePoint 2010 server application that allows people to share and view Microsoft Visio drawings inside your browser. Behind the scenes, this service not only allows you to share Visio drawings with other users, but it can also compose data from various sources (SharePoint list, Excel worksheet, Access database, or even SQL-based database), and then present the data to end users in the Visio drawing via their browser. The Visio Graphics Service story can't really be summed up in a few sentences, so let's check out the full story about the Visio Graphics Service here, beginning with a look at one of its specific advantages.

Microsoft Updates
Manage Query Suggestions (SharePoint Server 2010) (TechNet)
Query suggestions, also known as search suggestions, appear in a list below the Search Box Web Part and on the search results page in the Related Queries Web Part. You can turn off query suggestions so that they will not appear at query time, and you can manually create query suggestions. When you use Windows PowerShell to manually add query suggestions, you immediately provide the benefits of query suggestions to users of a newly installed search system. You can also supplement the default Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 behavior by adding query suggestions for key search terms. In this manner, you can provide query suggestions that might not be generated by the system because users are not using the search terms that would create the query suggestions that you want to appear.
