Microsoft (SharePoint), IBM and Oracle make Gartner’s Portal Magic Quadrant (CMS Wire)
For those looking to develop and implement horizontal portals, Gartner has recently published its Magic Quadrant report, which amongst other things, shows that with a shift towards Web 2.0, cloud and consumer facing portals, the number of viable vendors has dropped from more than 50 in 2003 to less than a dozen in 2010. According to Gartner, there is increased pressure on enterprises to improve employee productivity and collaboration, as well as extend business processes and applications to wider audiences.

Microsoft Getting Ready to Update BPOS With SharePoint 2010 (CMS Wire)
If you weren't really sure if Microsoft was serious about their strong focus on the cloud, think again. With 40 million seats sold of BPOS (Business Productivity Online Services), Microsoft says their customers are embracing the cloud and it's only going to get better. The Numbers Tell a Good Story: It really doesn't matter what you think about Microsoft, they are moving in the right direction. They have sold more than 6 million copies of Office to date, but even more interesting in the first 100 days it went live, Microsoft picked up 20 million users for Office Web Apps (who said the online version was crappy again?).

Indepth Q&A: Microsoft's Bob Muglia Details Cloud Strategy (PCWorld)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says the software giant is "all in" when it comes to cloud computing and he's relying on Bob Muglia to play the hand in this high-stakes game. As president of the nearly $15 billion Server and Tools Division of Microsoft, Muglia controls key data center products like Windows Server, SQL Server and System Center, as well as the Windows Azure platform-as-a-service (Paas) offering that is a key underpinning of the company's cloud strategy.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Keynote Video Now Available to Watch... Again and Again (Engadget)
In case a liveblog and a never-ending stream of Windows Phones weren't enough for you yesterday, here's a chance to relive Microsoft's launch presentation of its grand OS redesign. It's kicked off by the big dog himself, Steve Ballmer, followed by Ralph de la Vega and Joe Belfiore giving us the lowdown on carrier pricing and new features. It's good, we promise. Though we can't guarantee it's quite as awesome as the UK presentation, which included a Stephen Fry soliloquy on the subject of smartphones, diversity, and Microsoft's redemption. That one we've got stored in our hearts, which, regrettably, don't yet come with a HDMI output.

For Windows Phone 7, All of Microsoft Comes to Play (ZDNet)
If there’s one thing that’s clear after the official debut of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7, it’s that the new operating system is all in the family — the corporate family, that is. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took to the stage in New York this morning to officially introduce the company’s latest high-profile venture, an update to its maligned mobile platform, calling it “a very different kind of phone” that aims to “bring together the things that you love.”

Windows Phone 7: Defining Moment for Ballmer? (CNET)
Microsoft has a lot riding on the success of the upcoming Windows Phone 7. The same could also be said of CEO Steve Ballmer. Consider, for instance, the recent judgment rendered by Microsoft's board, which has signaled some dissatisfaction with Ballmer's job performance by cutting his bonus for 2010. One key reason: Microsoft's aborted mobile foray with the short-lived Kin.

Microsoft: Who Poked the Sleeping Dragon? (The Next Web)
As I sit here watching the keynote from the launch of Windows Phone 7, I can’t help but ask the question that makes the title of this post. For the past few years, Microsoft has been trampled by nearly everything in the market, with the exception of console gaming. But like that geeky kid in grade school who eventually becomes your boss, Microsoft appears to be making huge strides in nearly all of its products. Previous to Apple’s entry with OS X and the iPod, Microsoft ruled nearly every aspect of both the desktop and mobile computing worlds. Like it or not, you didn’t have many choices, and Microsoft stood on the top of all of them.

New Snapshot of Gov 2.0's Evolution (Huffington Post)
Earlier this week, GovLoop featured the results of a survey conducted by HP that asked 100 government IT professionals about their understanding and current experiences with "government 2.0". Here were a few of the stats cited in the post:

Implementing Page Components in the SharePoint Ribbon (Andrew Connell)
In my previous post I talked about how you implement the events when a user clicks on a button or other control in the ribbon. There are two options available to you in implementing these controls: a more declarative option using <CommandUIHandler /> (SDK link) elements in the Feature element manifests or using a page component. I covered the <CommandUIHandler /> option in the last post. The other option, page components, is covered here.

Is There Any Real Value in SharePoint Saturday? (EndUserSharePoint)
I came home after SharePoint Saturday Boston a few weeks back and my wife questioned my participation in the “good ‘ole boys club” a couple weekends each month. I opened my email around the same time and a colleague said he didn’t understand the value of going to SharePoint Saturdays. This made me stop and think… hard: Why DO I participate in SharePoint Saturday? What is the real value of giving up one or two weekends a month?

50 SharePoint 2010 Interview Questions With Answers – IT Pro / Architect (ARB Security Solutions)
In the tradition of providing relevant interview questions for SharePoint, and you can find my interview questions for SharePoint 2007 development here and the related answers here, I have put together interview questions for both a SharePoint 2010 IT Pro / Architect track after having to prepare to interview some folks for a local organization. As stated in the previous interview question postings, these questions will be targeted to a particular platform and thus for 2007 concepts while maybe sharing some broad concepts, you should visit the aforementioned pages in order to get this information. I am going to order these by major technology components so you can sorta pick and choose the questions that you think would be relevant for the particular SharePoint position that you seek to staff. Developer track questions will be coming along shortly, they just take a while to aggregate.

Blob Caching - Be Careful When Flushing the Cache! (Stefan Goßner)
In the past I have written a post about Blob Caching and some of the limitations when using this method: •MOSS 2007 Blob caching and it's limitations. In a recent service request my colleague Gyorgy Homolya worked on a performance problem which affected the site always at a specific time at a day. Analyzing some memory dumps showed that requests to the site were blocking each other waiting for files to be written to the blob cache. That means that effectively only a single request to the site was processed at a time - all others were waiting for the one being executed to finish.

How to Synch Your iPhone/iPad with a SharePoint Calendar (MashPoint - A Breakthrough in SharePoint Data Integration)
If you want to synch your iPhone or iPad with your SharePoint calendar all you have to do is to download and install MashPoint REST API for SharePoint and follow this tutorial. A bit of background might be useful: When Apple released iPhone OS 3.0 they added the capability to subscribe to internet calendars in CalDAV and iCalendar/ICS format. The MashPoint REST API is a free api from Bamboo Solutions that gives you a truly RESTful API on top of the whole SharePoint object model. The API works for both SharePoint 2007 and 2010.

Consider the following scenario. You perform certain kinds of complex custom queries on a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site or a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site. These custom queries cause the search service to restart unexpectedly. The search service takes several minutes to restart. In this scenario, search results are not available or are available with bad performance.
