Following in my tradition of forgetting dates, I just realized that SharePoint Daily turned three this past weekend. I never dreamed that in three years that Daily would have gone from an idea to a site with one billion daily readers. OK, maybe I haven't reached the billion mark, but it gives me something to work towards. Before signing off I would like to take this time to say Thank You to all of my readers. Why Pick Office 365 Over Free Cloud Tools? (ZDNet)
Microsoft has been offering business cloud services for some time, starting with its LiveMeeting conferencing product, and more recently its BPOS cloud servers. LiveMeeting may have been easy to use, but BPOS needed as much as hand-holding as your own server farm. Meanwhile the free and paid versions of Google Apps proved far easier to exploit and manage, while free tools such as Google Docs formed a useful ad hoc collaboration platform — making them popular with enterprises of all sizes.

Why Enterprises will Skip Windows 8 (ComputerWorld)
Enterprise IT had a good business case for moving off the nearly decade old Windows XP operating system and onto the more modern Windows 7. Windows 8 is shaping up to be a different story. The world doesn’t know much about Windows 8 right now, but one thing is clear: The transition from Windows’ traditional desktop user interface (UI) to the new, touch-based Metro UI will make for a rocky transition. Fresh from a Windows 7 upgrade that has moved corporate Windows desktops into the current decade, IT is likely skip Windows 8, even if consumers embrace it.

Microsoft Opens Garage to Spark Innovation (CNET)
It's typical for Microsoft to show off its latest wares at its annual Worldwide Partner Conference, if only to amp up partners' enthusiasm for hawking the software giant's goods. Some of the biggest gasps from the partisan crowd of 15,000 partners at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last week came for a nifty little program, the Lync Conversation Translator.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Market Strategy: 10 Major Flaws (eWeek)
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 was supposed to be the operating system that would carry Microsoft's mobile banner for the next few years. When Microsoft launched the platform, the software company said that Windows Phone 7 would be the reliable choice for those who want a high-quality mobile operating system and devices that will satisfy their needs. However, Windows Phone 7 so far has not fulfilled that promise. The operating system lacks the polish that consumers and enterprise users are finding in competing platforms, such as iOS and BlackBerry OS. But most significantly, few consumers even consider Microsoft's option a worthwhile competitor to Android. At this point, the marks against Windows Phone 7 far outweigh the advantages the platform enjoys.

Microsoft Media Platform Content Manager 1.0 Released (IIS)
The newly released Microsoft Media Platform Content Manager pulls together an end-to-end video workflow that allows you to create live streaming events, transcode on-demand content, manage and publish video, edit video, and insert mid-roll advertisements. This open-source release can be used by enterprises, educational institutions, and broadcasting companies to manage their video assets using a lightweight and highly-customizable solution built on Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and Microsoft Media Platform (MMP) technologies, including Silverlight 4, IIS Media Services 4.0, and Expression Encoder 4.

Google+ Speeds Up Social Business Plans (CMSWire)
Though Google had initially planned to test business partners on Google+ sometime in the next “few months,” it sounds like the Internet giant has decided to speed things up to next week. Could Plus be the social business network we've all been waiting for? Wrote Christian Oestlien, a Google group product manager, in a blog post yesterday: If you have not already, please be sure to submit your business for our test phase. SharePoint in the Cloud Roundtable (Owen Allen's Blog)
I’m participating in a SharePoint in the Cloud roundtable event (#FocusRT21) later this week (Thursday, July 21, 11AM PT), that should be very informative.  There are some great experts on the roundtable, which will be available for the public to call into.  I do hope that you can join us. SharePoint is having an impact in every direction where it stretches its legs.  Moving into the cloud is no different.  SharePoint has supported external applications for a few years now, with extensive Web service support.  With SharePoint 2010, SharePoint exposed native object models for .Net, JavaScript, and Silverlight, all designed to encourage more sophisticated remote clients for SharePoint – so that information and process stored in SharePoint could be leveraged in a distributed architecture.

For the most part, I've been holding my tongue on this topic for some time now, but I can no longer maintain my silence in good conscience.  Granted, what I'm about to say, I say in self-defense as much as I say it as an instance of, shall we say, editorial humanitarianism, but I say it in the sincere hope of changing the behavior of droves of tech writers out there. I'll let you in on a secret:  All editors, even easygoing guys like me, have their personal editorial pet peeves, those commonly misspelled words or grammatical errors that just put us on tilt.  Well, with cloud computing rocketing into the mainstream over the past few years, the one that has shot straight to the top spot on my own editorial pet peeves hit list is the growing popularity of the misspelling of the word "on-premises."
