Setting Up a SharePoint Developer Virtual Machine (Channel 9)
It's easy to get started with SharePoint 2010 development using the Information Worker Virtual Machine (VM). In this episode, you will learn all of the tips and tricks to get the VM up and running. The Information Worker virtual machine is a Hyper-V based VHD file that has everything you need to build SharePoint solutions already installed. The VM includes Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010, Exchange 2010, and more. In fact, this is the VM that we use for all of the SharePoint and Office training and Hands-On Labs on Channel 9.

Is Internet Explorer 9′s HTML5 Compliance a Mirage? (The Next Web)
We have been covering HTML5 compliance in Internet Explorer 9 for more than a year and a half now, a fact that you might assume implies that IE9 can handle HTML5 without so much as a hitch. You would be wrong to think so, sadly. We recently wrote a story called “Internet Explorer 9 just beat everyone in HTML5 compliance,” which gave rise to a number of, shall we say, sharp comments. We stuck to the data that we had picked up from a big test of all the major browsers, a test that showed IE9 ahead of the competition in regards to handling HTML5. We felt that our reporting was fair.

Windows Phone 7 Launch Underwhelming, Says LG Executive: Report (eWeek)
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 smartphone is proving an early disappointment, at least according to one LG Electronics executive. “From an industry perspective we had a high expectation, but from a consumer point of view the visibility is less than we expected,” James Choi, a marketing strategy and planning team director for LG Electronics, apparently told the blog Pocket-lint in an interview published Jan. 14.

Is Windows Azure Suitable for Startups? (ReadWriteWeb)
Last week we wrote about the services that Y Combinator startups use. For hosting, Amazon Web Services and Rackspace were the most popular services. Windows Azure was noticeably absent. But why? A topic turned up on Quora, citing our post and wondering why the lack of adoption. The topic has sparked a bit of discussion. The consensus: Azure is better suited for larger enterprise operations.

Tablet Revolution Reality Check (PCWorld)
With so much chatter about tablets this year, you might think that the handheld, rectangular devices being unveiled represent a significant innovation. The reality is that so much of what we're seeing is not a whole lot different than what we saw in previous years; these products offer only a few new twists. But those new twists could make the difference between tablets' remaining a niche item and their finally busting out to the mass market in a meaningful way.

Risks of Cyber War 'Over-hyped' Says OECD Study (BBC News)
The vast majority of hi-tech attacks described as acts of cyber war do not deserve the name, says a report. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development study is part of a series considering incidents that could cause global disruption.

Civic Innovation Organizations to Watch in 2011 (O'Reilly Radar)
What lies ahead for Gov 2.0 in 2011 is worth watching, whether it's international, federal or in states. Given the growth of citizen engagement platforms in 2010, expect more of the same in 2011. One of the most fascinating areas to track will be the evolution of smarter cities. Readers of the special report on smart systems at The Economist understand what "living on a platform" will mean. The technology landscape looks like a hybrid future, with the adoption of new cloud computing platforms from corporate giants like IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, Siemens and Google alongside the efforts of civic developers using open source components and smaller, scrappy startups.

Fool-proof Consistent Content Authoring in SharePoint 2010 Rich Text Editor (Waldek Mastykarz)
In my previous article I showed you how you can configure the SharePoint 2010 Rich Text Editor to help you do content authoring in a consistent fashion. We discussed what a Rich Text Editor should and should not allow to support consistent user experience within a website and how it can be done in SharePoint 2010. Although the configuration options of the Rich Text Editor in SharePoint 2010 allow you to achieve some neat results, it isn’t fool proof and this is exactly what we will discuss in this article: how to not only configure the RTE’s UI for consistent content authoring but also how to ensure that the authored content is consistent.

Scheduling SQL Backups for SharePoint (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
I do a lot of SharePoint installs and one question I always ask before the engagement is over is “How are you going to back this all up?” More often than I’m comfortable with, the answer is, “I don’t know.” In those cases I tell them the very, very least they can do is to do database level backups with SQL. Many times I hear silence on the other end of the phone. Seems many SharePoint folks just aren’t comfortable in SQL and aren’t sure how to do backups. I decided to write up this quick walk through to send to folks to get them started. I hate it when people lose SharePoint data.

WebMatrix Download (Mark Harrison blog)
Microsoft launched free Web publishing tools today in a new software suite called WebMatrix. The software is targeted at Web developers who may be using free open-source software to build websites. WebMatrix includes tools for running a website, including a Web server, database and Web frameworks. It also includes a tool for running search-engine optimization reports to help developers make their sites more prominent in Web searches.

Over the years as SharePoint has grown its features into the platform that we love and appreciate, it has also grown in complexity.
