Yahoo Completes Bing Search Transfer; Net Neutrality Must Apply to All of the Web; What Is Gov 2.0?
Published 08/25 courtesy of Bamboo Solutions Community
We've seen an overwhelmingly positive response to Workflow Conductor and are excited to be able to have the opportunity to show it off at this week's Best Practices Conference right here in Reston, VA. Jeff Tubb, Product Manager for Conductor, will be leading the session on "Process Automation Options for SharePoint" on Wednesday, August 25 at 4:15pm in Reston Suite A. Please be sure to join us, as it's going to be a great session with tons of useful information on how to best implement workflows in your organization. Even better news: we'll be giving away a free copy of Workflow Conductor at the end of the session (value: $4,500) to one lucky attendee!

Yahoo, Microsoft Complete Bing Search Transfer (eWeek)
Yahoo’s expected transfer of its backend search to Bing is completed, according to a corporate blog posting from Microsoft. Under an agreement signed in the summer of 2009, Yahoo will take over worldwide salesforce duties for both companies’ search advertisers, while Bing powers Yahoo’s backend search.
Security? What Security? (IT-Director)
We live in a world now that whatever you read you are bound to come across the word “Security” in some form. This word covers a whole gamut of meanings, so let’s go back to basics of a simple definition: “Security is about freedom from doubt, anxiety, fear; risk or danger; safety. It also has associated with this meaning the context of confidence in that freedom.”
Microsoft Readies Windows Phone 7 App Store (PCWorld?)

Microsoft says that the new tools will allow developers to tweak current apps and games to be ready for submission in early October.
Were You In Line to Buy Windows 95 Fifteen Years Ago? (ZDNet)
As a couple of my Twitter buddies have noted, it was 15 years ago today, August 24, that Microsoft launched Windows 95. I remember exactly where I was on that perfect, blue-sky summer day: I was in the third row inside the tent where Chairman Bill Gates and Jay Leno launched the operating system (to the tune of “Start Me Up.”) Outside, on the grounds of the Microsoft Redmond campus, was a full-size ferris wheel. The night before, thousands of people had lined up at Best Buys and other retail stores to buy their copies of Windows 95 at midnight. (As I recall, more than a few in line didn’t know what they were lining up to buy, but they queued, figuring it must be something big.)
Firefox 4 Beta 4 Tackles Browser Tab Chaos (CNET)
Mozilla released its fourth beta of Firefox 4 on Tuesday, bringing a new feature that addresses one of the biggest challenges in the new era of the browser: reclaiming control over the burgeoning number of tasks that now happen on the Web. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, Firefox 4 beta 4 introduces a feature now called Firefox Panorama. Today's browsers typically cram tabs in a strip along the top of the window, but Panorama provides a Mac OS X Expose-like interface that groups tabs into related bunches.
What Is Gov 2.0? Putting SEC Data Online, In 1993 (Huffington Post)
What is government 2.0? Some days, it seem like there are as many definitions for Gov 2.0 as there are people. Tim O'Reilly says Gov 2.0 is all about the platform. In many ways, Gov 2.0 could be usefully described as putting government in your hands. And in three weeks, people will come from all around the world to learn more about what's happening in the crucible of people, technology and government at the Gov 2.0 Summit in Washington.
Don't Be Evil, Google: Net Neutrality Must Apply to All of the Web (Colorado Daily)
Google characterizes its agreement with Verizon, announced earlier this month, as a pragmatic compromise in the battle over net neutrality, which government regulators have struggled for years to address. Critics say it's a profit-driven cave to the telecommunications industry.

Event ID 6801 “Invalid URI” with User Profile Service on SharePoint 2010 (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
In the continuing saga of the User Profile Service (UPS) kicking my butt, I have a heartwarming tale of one victory I can claim. It involves Event ID 6801 "Invalid URI: A port was expected because of there is a colon (':') present but the port could not be parsed." and me besting the User Profile Service. Don't believe me? Well, here's my tale…

BPC 2010: SharePoint 2010 Workflow with David Mann (SharePoint 2010)
David Mann, acclaimed SharePoint Server MVP and author of Workflow in the 2007 Office System (Apress, 2007), led the first of several SharePoint 2010 workflow sessions at the Best Practices Conference this week. Since I write for Bamboo's Workflow Conductor product, I am all about the workflow sessions this week. The agenda for this session included what's changed for SharePoint workflow in 2010, what's improved, and "gotchas" we still have to watch out for.
BPC: Cathy Dew Answers the Question, 'SharePoint Branding - Where Do You Even Begin?' (SharePoint 2010)
Cathy Dew, one of the founders of Women in SharePoint (with whom Bamboo Nation is proud to share media sponsorship responsibilities on behalf of the BPC), delivered the first of many SharePoint branding-centric sessions scheduled to take place at the conference this week. As it was the first branding-related session, it centered, appropriately enough, Cathy focused on answering the question, "Where do you begin?"
Best Practices Conference 2010: How to Best Gather Requirements for SharePoint Projects (The Bamboo Team Blog)
SharePoint is like water. It can be anything and something and nothing. People want to box it one way, and other people want to box it another way, which is fine, except that nobody's on the same page. —Dux Raymond Sy. Why do requirements and SharePoint implementations fail? According to Dux Raymond Sy, the answer is lack of relevant communication.

BPC Keynote: 'What the Masters Think About SharePoint 2010,' Facilitated by Spence Harbar (SharePoint 2010)
At the conclusion of his introductory remarks, Bill English handed the reins over to Spence Harbar, who began the BPC keynote proper with an overview of the Microsoft Certified Master (MCM) program. Spence shared that it had been announced just this morning that, having previously been an MCM for SharePoint 2007, he is now among just four people to have been awarded MCM status for SharePoint 2010.

This instance of the conference, taking place in Reston, VA, features: over 375 attendees; 130 sessions being presented by over 60 speakers, including five MCMs (Microsoft Certified Masters, all five of whom were to follow Bill in delivering the keynote proper), and 18 MVPs; 30 exhibitors, half of whom (including Bamboo) are BPC sponsors; attendees include 100+ CIO, IA, Director, and/or PM; and federal employees represent 25% of all attendees.
