SharePoint 2010: A Look Back at 2011 (CMSWire)
There were no big Microsoft-based announcements for SharePoint this year. 2011 was really about proper planning and implementation practices for SharePoint 2010. And of course, it was about the partner ecosystem and all the good stuff it brought to the SharePoint platform. Here are some highlights, mixed in with a discussion about social business with Jared Sparato.

SharePoint: Transforming the Information Have-nots Into the Haves (KMWorld)
I really enjoy how quick and easy it is to find information on the Internet. We all take it for granted now, but it wasn't too long ago that tracking down information was completely manual and incredibly time-consuming. When I was a kid, there were two camps of people: those who obtained information from their own set of encyclopedias, and those who had to trek to the public library for information. I was part of that second camp and always felt a little out-classed by the kids who had information at their fingertips, in their own homes (the haves). Sure visiting the public library was fun, but I didn't get there too often. It was in the center of town, and we lived in the suburbs. When it came time to do school projects, I was at a disadvantage (the have-nots). Information was not as easily accessible to me as it was for my encyclopedia friends.

The 10 Sexiest Microsoft Business Teases for 2012 (ZDNet)
This past year, 2011, was one where Microsoft officials played up almost exclusively the company’s consumer-focused products and services. Just look at Microsoft’s own year in review lists and notice how many of the listings are for consumer products sold at retail. Part of this emphasis was due to Microsoft striving to position itself as a consumer-goods company. And part, I believe, was due to the fact that 2011 was an in-between year for Microsoft, as they had relatively few business-focused products ready to ship.

Cloud Could Rain On Microsoft's Profit Parade (Forbes)
Microsoft is one of the largest enterprise software companies in the world, which competes with other biggies like Oracle, SAP and Salesforce.com. Most enterprise software giants have started offering cloud-based, on-demand versions of their software, aiming to capture market share in the rapidly growing cloud computing market. Microsoft itself has launched Office 365, a cloud version of the Office suite, as well as hosted services like Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Lync Online. However, Microsoft’s push into cloud-based applications and services may hurt its profit margins going forward.

Why Nobody Will Play Nice With Windows Phone 7 (New York Times)
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 software has a unique, modern design that many say is superior to Android’s more rugged, computery look. But a former Microsoft employee says looks alone are not enough to make Windows Phone succeed. Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7 in November 2010, and has since formed a major partnership with Nokia in hopes of gaining a foothold in a mobile market that is increasingly dominated by Apple and Google. Despite the company’s best efforts, sales of Windows Phone 7 handsets are still tiny.

IE Market Share Falls Below 40% for the First Time (Windows 7 News)
There was a time when Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser had a healthy 95% of the overall browser market.  This didn’t even mean that their main opposition on the PC had the other 5% as you had to factor into this the Apple Mac on which people ran Safari.  Sadly this was the time of IE6 where the browser had little or no competition and, as such, innovation was stifled as Microsoft felt they had nothing to compete against. The birth and fast growth of Firefox fortunately changed all that and now the horribly buggy and insecure nightmare that is IE6 is firmly on its last legs, supported only in some businesses where the cost or redeveloping bespoke web apps is prohibitive, and in emerging computing markets such as China.

Move Your SharePoint 2010 Logs Off of Your C Drive (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
Today is the 2nd of January, and prime time to look at New Year’s Resolutions, or as I like to think of them, a list of things I’ll do for two, maybe three days tops, then forget all about for 363 (or in this case, 364) days. Losing weight is one of the more common ones. Since we all know none of us is actually going to stick with that (I type as I eat some Christmas fudge) I propose we do some other shrinking, reducing the space SharePoint takes on the C drive of your server. For production SharePoint 2010 servers, the C drive should be at least 80 GB, and this blog post doesn’t change that. However, we shouldn’t waste it. When I do SharePoint 2010 installs I always recommend to my customers that they have a secondary drive. That drive serves a few purposes, and one of them is to serve as a place to store stuff you can move off of your C drive. SharePoint’s logs are a great candidate for that. A couple of years ago I blogged how to do this for SharePoint 2007. Today’s post is how to do it for SharePoint 2010.

Branding the Search Box in SharePoint 2010 (Me & My SharePoint Designer)
I have written some blog posts previously about branding the global navigation which is an important part of the SharePoint user interface. The search box is another part of the user interface that often needs a bit branding especially if it concerns a public faced web site where the search box could be one of the most important elements in the user interface.

Getting Started with Debugger Canvas – An Aid in Your Daily Development (Debugging) Tasks (Tobias Zimmergren)
Sometimes when you’re in a development project you can feel the pain of debugging. If there’s a lot of code floating around it may be hard to sort out the method calls and how the depend on each other if it’s a very complex solution. To ease the task of debugging there’s a great VS 2010 plugin called Debugger Canvas, which will help you to sort out a lot of the hassle while debugging.

Integrating an Azure Application with SharePoint (Winsmarts)
In my previous articles, I demonstrated the basic process of writing an azure app, and deploying it. In the process we enabled RDP, used table storage, queues, (blobs are very similar), and we developed locally and deployed to azure. Now, let's integrate it with SharePoint. The app we were writing was a ComplaintBox. I’d like to see those complaints inside SharePoint.

Best Practices: Turning Uncertainty into a Predictable Process via Tasks in a Project Schedule (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As the holidays approach, you know you need to plan for what to cook, what to buy, and timing everything so that your holiday feast is ready on time for your family and guests. For example, if you need to serve a turkey with a selection of side dishes at 3 P.M., what time do you have to start cooking each dish? With anything (whether work or home projects), it's good to have a plan so you can take uncertainty out of the equation.

Access Multiple SharePoint 2010 Lists by Using LINQ (MSDN)
In this exercise, you develop and deploy a visual Web Part that reads data from three lists by using LINQ queries and displays the results in a grid view control. The Web Part also contains a drop-down control that enables you to select which query is executed. To complete this task, you must do the following: Create a Visual Web Part Project; Generate LINQ to SharePoint Proxy Code; Add Code to Create the SharePoint Controls; Add the LINQ Queries to the Project; Test the Solution.
