Application Development in the Cloud with SharePoint Online 2010 (ComputerWeekly)
In this guest blog post, Jeremy Thake, enterprise architect and Microsoft SharePoint MVP at Avepoint looks at the opportunities for using SharePoint Online 2010 as an application development platform. Microsoft launched Office 365 (O365) in June 2010, including SharePoint 2010 Online, as an update to its existing Business Productivity Online Services (BPOS) suite that offered SharePoint 2007 Online. But what is SharePoint?

Implementing Global Intranet Governance with a Proper Long-term Roadmap (AIIM)
You have probably been flooded with external sources telling you what SharePoint Governance really is and I am here to state mine and my SharePoint Consulting organization, EPC Group’s, definitive and believe only true way to implement Global Intranet Governance with a forward looking roadmap to match. For Global organizations with tens of thousands of users, the Return on Investment by following this strategy below should be in the millions. I have written a number of articles for AIIM but I can confidently stand behind my position on Global Intranet Governance and Roadmaps because EPC Group is engaged in there literally every day and for nearly the past decade.

Microsoft Boosts Office 365 Plan K Capabilities (WindowsITPro)
Many reports have emerged recently to say that Microsoft will soon offer more capabilities to users of its Office 365 Plan K, which is the lowest-cost priced plan sold to “kiosk” (hence K) users who are happy to restrict themselves to the Outlook Web App (OWA) client. Of course, some of these folk might not be too happy to be restricted as they’d much prefer to use Plan P or Plan E but their companies won’t pay the extra.

CES 2012: Competition for the Cloud Thickens (MarketNews)
To spot one of the early trends at CES 2012, one needs to look away from the show floor and up to the cloud. Cloud computing services from companies like Acer, Lenovo and others aren't just window dressing or add-ons to the new smartphones, tablets and Ultrabooks being shown off here. They are key components to this year's hardware offerings. The newly announced cloud services pose direct competition to more established players such as Microsoft's Office 365, Apple's iCloud, Google's services and Amazon's Cloud Player.

Can One Phone Save Nokia and Microsoft? (Tempo)
The Lumia 900 was launched by Finnish phone company Nokia at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today with surprisingly frank talk from the company’s CEO about how both his company and Microsoft trail in the market for smart phones. Steven Elop repeatedly drew on military metaphors to describe how he planned to assault the US market. “Clearly there are strong contenders already on the field [and] our strategy has been to establish a series of beach heads,” he said, before unveiling the new handset, which comes in either black or cyan, and will be available on AT&T’s 4G network in coming weeks. “From that beach head you will see us push forward,” said Elop.

CES: Kinect for Windows Coming Feb. 1 (Redmond Channel Partner)
Kinect for Windows hardware will go on sale for $249 starting Feb. 1, when a free commercial software development kit (SDK) will also be available for download. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the planned availability Monday night in Las Vegas during a Consumer Electronics Show keynote that was otherwise light on announcements and mostly served as a recap of Microsoft's progress on Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox.

SSAS Cubes, Excel and SharePoint – Keeping Contributors Happy (WorkerThread)
OK, I know this isn’t exactly cutting edge stuff and we now have PowerPivot, the forthcoming Power View, tabular data models and more in SQL Server 2012 but let’s face it, there are a great many organisations for whom none of these new features will actually be in production in 2012.  These organisations have invested in SQL Server 2008 R2 and spent time in 2011 building SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) cubes from their line of business data – and getting SharePoint 2010 up and running.  Now they want to get a return on their investment before they spend more on licences, upgrades and more hardware.

SharePoint 2010 + Windows Azure - Integration Options (Andrew Connell)
Now it's time to talk about integration options with SharePoint 2010 & Windows Azure. First let's look at what type of options are available to developers, then we'll talk about the technologies you can use to facilitate this integration. Integration Options: You can look at the different integration scenarios as three pillars ranging from the most simple to the more complex scenarios. Here's how I presented them in a breakout session I presented at the SharePoint Conference in October 2011:

The Timer Recycle Job (job-timer-recycle) (Beside the Point)
In SharePoint 2010 a daily job to recycle the Timer Service was introduced. Because many jobs written by many parties run in the same Timer Service process, one misbehaving job could cause problems for all other jobs on the same server, which could ultimately cause problems across the farm. To mitigate this risk, a job runs by default once daily at 6:00 AM to recycle the timer service. You can of course change the schedule or entirely disable the job-timer-recycle job by calling Disable-SPTimerJob or Set-SPTimerJob appropriately. You can also create and set the registry value indicated in the following PowerShell command to 1 to automatically disable the Timer Service Recycle job immediately upon creation in a farm (it would need to be set prior to creating the farm):

Removing Access to SharePoint Designer (SharePoint 365)
This week I am in the pleasurable company of Penny Coventry as I sit the Combined Knowledge SharePoint Designer 2010 course. During the course we have been talking about many things SharePoint Designer but one of the things that I thought would be useful for the blog was the ability to limit the access of SharePoint Designer in your web applications or site collections.

Run HTML5 Videos in SharePoint 2010 - Part 1 (SharePointDevWiki)
Are you ready? Are you excited? Have you been hearing this buzz word (HTML5) for a long time but couldn't muster enough confidence or energy to venture into it. Well, guess what! Now is the time! If you have ever wanted to learn this technology, you are at the right place. Just imagine, HTML5 and SharePoint 2010! Together! That's seems unbelievable! Isn't it? Well, I will be honest here. It's not about SharePoint. The problem is with the browsers.

Brand the Search Box in SharePoint 2010 (EndUserSharePoint)
I have written some blog posts, in the past, about branding the global navigation which is an important part of the SharePoint user interface. The search box is another part of the user interface that often needs a bit of branding especially if it concerns a public faced web site where the search box could be one of the most important elements in the user interface.
