Using SharePoint In A Regulated Environment (Life Science Leader)
The regulatory landscape is constantly changing and requires a greater number of businesses to demonstrate compliance. The compliance landscape for most organizations consists of either Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), or the FDA’s Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 21 Part 11 regarding electronic records and electronic signatures. The critical information format organizations use to demonstrate compliance with these regulations are documents or records of some type. In today’s environment, most of these records are maintained or authored in some type of electronic format.
Microsoft Unleashes Five Service Packs for Its Enterprise Security Wares (PC World)
In the past week, Microsoft has unleashed five service packs for its enterprise class security software. These service packs include the beta 2 of its identity management framework "Geneva," the SP3 of Forefront Security for SharePoint, the SP2 of Forefront Security for Exchange Server and trial versions of Antigen Spam Manager for Exchange and Antigen for SMTP Gateways.
Cisco Describes Plans for Office-Like Service (Cert Cities)
Networking giant Cisco Systems on Tuesday showed an interest in the hosted productivity suite space that Microsoft is poised to dominate. In an online press conference, a Cisco executive announced that the company is "thinking about" adding a service that would allow users to create Office-like documents that could be shared online. The new service would be part of Cisco's WebEx suite, according to Doug Dennerline, senior vice president and manager of Cisco's Web services.
When is it Enough? (The Examiner)
So, how are the Microsoft wannabes doing out there on the market? Well, I’ll bet you’ve heard that Microsoft is still in business and that Office is still the top seller at about $60 billion (yep) in Office sales last year. Honestly folks; sometimes I wonder why we need yet another choice out there. Now, Cisco is considering making an entrance into this market, but while it seems like this is just one more example of “don’t we have enough,” there are sound reasons for this.
Google Apps Gets the Shaft but It's the Broader Cloud That Needs to Improve (Google Watch)
You know what really grinds my gears? There's a popular argument circulating that Google Apps isn't good enough for enterprises, that the SAAS collaboration software suite isn't battle tested enough. One could certainly make that case against the standard Google Apps, with its easy-breezy, no-frills approach to computing.
FAQ: How Much Will Windows 7 Cost You? (PC World)
Last week, Microsoft unveiled retail pricing for Windows 7, the successor to Vista and Microsoft's hope for a revival in operating system buzz. But as soon as the sheet was yanked off the price board, people started asking questions. How much for this? What will I pay for that? The questions were endless, it seemed, even though Microsoft culled Home Basic from the line-up, exiling it to the "emerging markets" category and banning it from retail.
Windows 7 Could be a Touch Too Much (ZDNet)
There is a reason the first thing Microsoft chose to show publicly of Windows 7 was its support for touch input. The built-in ability to use two fingers to rotate, scroll and zoom offers tangible proof that the operating system is different from its predecessor, not to mention being something not found on a Mac.
Determine When & How To Upgrade To Internet Explorer 8 (Processor)
Is your enterprise considering a move to Internet Explorer 8? Upgrading should generally go smoothly, but data center managers should be aware of a few factors that could come into play during the transition.
A Father of Netscape Begins a Silicon Valley Venture Firm (The New York Times)
The man who popularized the Web browser has started a venture capital fund to back the next generation of new technologies. Marc Andreessen, who co-founded Netscape, is announcing on Monday that he and Ben Horowitz, a longtime business associate, have raised $300 million that they intend to invest in technology companies. The venture capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz, will risk small sums, as little as $50,000, on new ideas.

It is the Process Stupid! (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
OK - maybe the title is a bit harsh - but maybe not! There is also the rather harsh saying - "A fool with a tool is still a fool". I first heard this saying from a very enthusiastic process disciple called Sami Zahran when we worked together at Digital way back in 1990. At the time we were working on process maturity with the SEI's CMM - Software Engineering Institute - Capability Maturity Model.

This post is going to be a summary of some of some the SharePoint controls I regularly use in my solutions. Cool thing about re-using the controls that are already out there is, that saves time in re-inventing the wheel and you don’t have to worry about keeping the look & feel consistent

Check this out: Cool Automated Tools for Designing and Deploying SharePoint Information Architectures (Network World)
Last week, I had a chance to get a demo of a cool product for designing and maintaining taxonomies for SharePoint sites called MetaVis Architect. The tool is designed for information architects – people who have the responsibility for designing an information taxonomy for a SharePoint site. They also offer a product called MetaVis Classifier that supports end users who have to migrate and tag content from a file share (or another SharePoint site) into a new site. Together, they make a suite worth exploring.
The Secret to Understanding Governance (Clever Workarounds)
I’m very tempted to start this post like a dodgy wealth-guru infomercial. You know the ones – with lots of imagery of people living the dream of financial freedom. I am thinking a montage of a resort, a large boat anchored in a topical bay, carving up the water with a jet-ski and then a shot of me standing next to my Ferrari, champagne in hand, with Megan Fox on my arm. My message would be that for a “small” fee of $10,000, you too could learn the secrets to your financial freedom in an intimate, exclusive but “intensive” weekend workshop. Just you and the 15,000 other people that pack into the convention hall.
Add “Click to Call” to SharePoint People Search (Matthew McDermott)
At Catapult we recently implemented Unified Communications all the way to our phones. I love the functionality and reach provided by the UC solution. I love getting voice mail in my Inbox. I have to be more careful about my Communicator Status, but that is easy. We needed an easy way to enable calling and lookup inside the company. We already had People search so I decided to add the ability to click the displayed phone number to call the found person. It just requires adding a hyperlink with the TEL: prefix.
