SharePoint Gods Peek Into Colleagues' Info – Poll (The Register)
SharePoint admins are abusing their privileged status to sneak a peek at classified documents according to a poll that shows consistent abuse of security in Microsoft's business collaboration server. A third of IT administrators or somebody they know with admin rights have read documents hosted in Microsoft's collaboration server that they are not meant to read.

Our Office 365 Experience: Part 3, The Verdict (RedmondMag)
After a smooth migration from Google Apps to Office 365, we're pretty pleased. The Exchange side couldn't work more smoothly. SharePoint -- after a couple of hiccups and re-starts -- is also a blessing. Our lesson? Don't mess with the built-in groups that SharePoint creates when you set up a new site. Sure, you can change their membership, but don't delete them or SharePoint just doesn't work right any more.

Microsoft Takes a New Approach to the Cloud (eWeek)
“Cloud” was the big word at Microsoft’s recent Private Cloud Reviewers’ Workshop here. There were many other words uttered, such as System Center 2012, Windows Azure, Hyper-V and so forth, but “cloud” seemed to be spoken the most. However, whenever presenters during the event—which ran the week of Jan. 9—mentioned the cloud, they were really talking about much more than standard view of cloud technology. Microsoft’s utterances of a word that has come to mean many different things to many people was meant to clarify, not further confuse. Simply put, the term “cloud” was meant to encourage, not blur visions of future IT.

First Look: Windows 8 Breaks New Ground (NetworkWorld)
The first public beta for Windows 8 is expected to be released in February, but we've been testing pre-beta code in our lab. Our overall impression is that Windows 8 represents an aggressive effort by Microsoft to deliver a single OS that runs just about everywhere and takes on all of Microsoft's key rivals. There's a tablet edition that targets Apple's iPad, a server edition with virtualization features aimed at VMware, and a smartphone OS to challenge the iPhone and Android markets.

Will the Windows 8 Beta be the “Consumer Preview” (Windows 8 News & Tips)
We’ve had the “Developer Preview” of Windows 8 and now that the beta is due in the next month we could find it being called the “Consumer Preview”, at least according to Janelle Poole, Microsoft’s director of public relations who in a statement at CES was found to have said… We haven’t talked about the release date and we generally don’t. We are talking milestone to milestone, so for us right now, we’re talking about the next milestone being the Consumer Preview happening in late February.”

Nokia Reportedly Owns 45% of Second Generation Windows Phone Market Share (Ubergizmo)
We know that Nokia has been selling a lot of Windows Phone devices, but how many has it been selling compared to other manufacturers? Well, according to the game collection data from OccasionalGamer (which has its games installed over a million times on various Windows Phone devices) – 45% of second generation Windows Phone devices (those released with Mango onboard) belong to Nokia. A pretty impressive percentage, seeing how Nokia wasn’t around for the first generation of WP phones and only came onboard with Mango.

Mobile Data: Are You Carrying a Suitcase Or a Safe? (CIO)
This vendor-written tech primer has been edited by Network World to eliminate product promotion, but readers should note it will likely favor the submitter's approach. If you were packing for a trip and needed to take reams of documents with personal data, such as bank statements and medical bills, would you rather put them in a suitcase or a safe?

Centered Fixed Width Design in SharePoint 2010 - The fast way (EndUserSharePoint)
There are a lot of fixed width master page solutions available on the internet and I've read most of them. Some require JavaScript or don’t respect the ribbon, which means that the ribbon will be placed inside the fixed width design. SharePoint is smart enough to handle small screen resolutions by compacting and rearranging the icons in the ribbon, but if a larger screen is used it gets really hard to administer SharePoint and breaks the usability completely.

Current Storage Used Figure is Incorrect for a Site Collection (From The Field)
MOSS 2007 and SharePoint 2010 keep a record of the total storage consumed by each Site collection; this is presented in Central Administration within the Site Collection Quotas and Locks page and also the Storage Space Allocation page within each Site collection in MOSS 2007. This figure is used by SharePoint to determine if a Site collection is exceeding its configured storage quota.

WCM in SharePoint–Page Content Column (T3chnicalLead)
A bad workman always blames his tools and in the case of SharePoint, I have run into people from time to time that are, let’s just say, less than thrilled about some of SharePoint features. A message I have across the board is this;  Be sure that you are using the correct part of SharePoint for the task at hand.  This is of course assuming that SharePoint was the correct tool in the first place, let’s move on.

Michael Noel’s ‘Building the Perfect SharePoint Farm’ at STP Montevideo (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Before I get to Michael's session proper, I should explain that no, you're not imagining things, and that is indeed Michael Noel presenting in one of Mark Miller's signature Western shirts in the picture above. The short version of the story is that over dinner last night, Paul Swider made a bet with Michael (who hails from San Francisco) regarding the outcome of the San Francisco 49ers / New York Giants playoff game back home in the states. If San Francisco won the game, Paul would have to present his STP Montevideo session wearing Joel Oleson's iconic Egypt soccer jersey; if New York won, Michael would have to present his session today in Mark Miller's Western shirt. The New York Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers last night in the final minutes of overtime, hence Michael's unconventional appearance at today's session.
