The Future of ECM: Looking Less and Less Like SharePoint? (CMS Wire)
The explosion of content, media and cloud computing has had an irreversible impact on consumer behavior and expectations. In an ECM context, the resulting shifts in shape and structure are the beginnings of a new environment for managing data. Unfortunately for traditional systems – cough, SharePoint, cough – this territory comes with a set of rules that may be a bit difficult to adjust to.

Evolution of Enterprise IT and Virtualization Infrastructures to Private Cloud (Forbes)
I was having lunch with a colleague yesterday and we were talking about the logical evolution underway in IT, which began a couple of years ago with the broad availability of server virtualization technology like Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. With the advent of cloud computing as an infrastructure choice, the evolution crank is again turning, with companies beginning to investigate the technology options available to them.  Private cloud solutions — whether on premise in your own datacenter or off premise (hosted by a partner) — hold the promise of delivering even greater opportunities for efficiency with improved IT automation, elasticity of resources, and deeper capabilities for tracking usage.  Those of you that are already using server virtualization are ahead of the curve in adopting private cloud solutions.

Best Browser 2011: Which Should You be Using? (TechRadar)
It's 2011, and browsing is better than ever: the big-name packages deliver seriously speedy browsing on every conceivable kind of kit. But there are big differences in their approach, in their expandability and in some cases, in their performance - so what's the best browser for 2011? Let's find out.

Is Windows Phone Ready for Business? (PhoneDog)
RIM has a stranglehold on corporate users and iPhone has made impressive strides into businesses.  Is Windows Phone suitable and ready to get down to business? RIM just keeps on chugging along despite constant predictions of its demise.  Most of this continued growth comes from corporate customers that trust their BlackBerrys to get the job done.  RIM recognizes the importance of the consumer market and is certainly doing what it can to capture more mindshare there, but it’s success comes from a legacy in the business world.  In contrast, the Apple’s iPhone has the legacy of being a great personal device.  I’m convinced it’s popularity in business comes from employees pressuring their bosses and IT staff into getting the iPhone simply because it’s what they wanted.

Why the Microsoft-Google Cloud Sniping Won't Stop Soon (InfoWorld)
The interminable sniping between Microsoft and Google over their respective cloud-based office productivity services may never end. The latest Microsoft shot at Google came around the final release of Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office last week. Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office adds cloud and collaboration to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, and 2010 on Windows PCs, using Microsoft's Office APIs (available for Windows only -- thus, the lack of Mac support in Cloud Connect). The value is that multiple people may collaborate on the same file at the same time.

Microsoft Hopes Daily Deals Make Its Cash Register Go 'Bing!' (CNN)
Microsoft has dialed up its competition in the search-engine wars with the introduction of a daily deals facility on Bing. Microsoft knows daily deals are the hottest meme at the moment, so its announcement is suitably cheeky and aggressively street-hawkeresque (we kid): "Calling all bargain hunters, deal lovers, Groupon groupies and Living Social fanatics! Things just got easier" it trumpets, making no bones about mentioning the biggest name in daily deals right now, Groupon, in order to gin up interest in its service.

Business Requirement or Business Value? Take a step to the Right... (EndUserSharePoint)
One of the key issues I see with any project based upon the Microsoft SharePoint Platform is the significant lack of business value they actually ever deliver despite the promises of a “collaboration nirvana” or a “strategic business platform”. I blogged about this topic very briefly a few months ago on my SharePoint Business Value blog, but really only introduced the topic, so it’s great to have this opportunity to post my deeper thoughts and insight on the topic here!

Training as Employee Perks (SharePoint Magazine)
In the previous columns, I’ve been discussing the economic sides of employee training. You’ve learned that training is massively expensive if seen as an isolated expense. However, when seen in conjunction with the soft benefits, such as increased accuracy, faster task execution, and ability to tackle more varieties of tasks, training begins to make sense. Before I expand on the hard numbers, however, I would like to mention another important aspect of the return on investment (ROI) of training, that of employee satisfaction and motivation.

Finally also the February 2011 CU for the SharePoint 2010 product family has been released. The MOSS 2007 fixes have been released roughly two weeks ago. Some of the KB articles are not yet available (as usual it will take a couple more days to get these through the required release process) but the fixes can already be downloaded.

The Importance of Customization in CRM and Product Support Adoption (The Bamboo Team Blog)
CRM and Product Support software adoption is a crucial issue for companies as they make the strategic decisions about the right solutions for them. Companies count on these tools to streamline sales and marketing, improve customer service and increase effectiveness of product support teams. They are key elements in any company growth and customer retention plans, and at the core of these plans is the issue of adoptability. Is the product easy to use? Will staff resist implementation? How much work will it take to deploy?  Will staff ever embrace it, or will they use it grudgingly?
