Enterprise Collaboration: Guidance from the Experts (Enterprise Collaboration)
A number of experts helped us kick off our enterprise collaboration theme with advice on everything from where to start to how to manage in 2011. It's going to be a month-long extravaganza, but in case you blinked and missed a second of blastoff, here's a quick recap:
What Microsoft Got Right in Office 365 (PC Pro)
Microsoft has announced a limited beta test of the replacement for its Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS). Due to be released in 2011, Office 365 is the overarching brand under which all the cloud-based services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Lync Online will be combined with Office Web Apps or Office 2010 Professional Plus. Office 365 is paid for by subscription, with several plans for differently sized customers and feature requirements. All plans come with Hosted Exchange mailboxes, although the size of mailboxes varies from 500MB for kiosk workers to 25GB for everyone else.
Firefox 4 RC Vs. IE9 RC: The First Duel (ConceivablyTech)
Mozilla posted the first builds of the Release Candidate of Firefox on its FTP servers: Time for a first comparison with IE9 RC, its main rival. How fast is Mozilla’s Firefox 4 RC1? At the time of this writing, Mozilla’s Firefox 4 RC has not been released, at least not officially. However, the first build of the release candidate was available openly for some time last Friday and we accepted the invitation to take a closer look.
Microsoft Azure Named Fastest Cloud Service (InformationWeek)
In a comparative measure of cloud service providers, Microsoft's Windows Azure has come out ahead. Azure offered the fastest response times to end users for a standard e-commerce application. But the amount of time that separated the top five public cloud vendors was minuscule. These are first results I know of that try to show the ability of various providers to deliver a workload result. The same application was placed in each vendor's cloud, then banged on by thousands of automated users over the course of 11 months.
Windows Phone “Mango” Update May Slip to 2012; Could Delay Nokia (SlashGear)
Microsoft may still be working on getting the NoDo update out to Windows Phone users, but there’s already talk that the more significant “Mango” update – expected to bring multitasking, Internet Explorer 9 with partial HTML5 support, and other feature boosts – may not even arrive in 2011. According to WindowsITPro, Mango will only be finalized by the end of the year, and their sources reckon that Microsoft’s ambitious promise to ship to consumers before 2011 is out “is a near impossibility.”

Facilitating Content Upload to SharePoint Sites Using SharePoint Workspace (To the SharePoint)
Network traffic, poor connectivity, and server downtime due to adverse conditions can interrupt communications with a SharePoint site. Such interruptions can make the process of updating a document on a SharePoint site frustrating for users. Content exchange with hosting servers can take longer than expected, even for minor updates, but especially when updates involve large or complex documents. And, if a network connection is tenuous, users could lose their changes while in the process of making them. Because user connectivity problems eventually come around to the supporting IT team, you probably feel their pain.
Adventures in the Land of Metadata: Should I Use a Lookup or a Choice Column? (NetworkWorld)
I'm working on a project where we are re-architecting a folder-intensive document library structure to a metadata-centric library structure as part of a migration from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010. For a variety of reasons, we are not using managed metadata (for now). One of the interesting choices we're reviewing is whether to make our document attributes Choice or Lookup columns. Here are some of the factors we're evaluating and which column type is typically the better choice for each evaluation criteria.
Taxonomy–The Challenge of Starting from Scratch (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
One of the most talked about capabilities since the launch of SharePoint 2010 is the Managed Metadata Service. For those of you who aren’t already familiar with this service and the support it provides for modeling and deploying a rich corporate taxonomy, I’d recommend reading Pat’s post Introducing Enterprise Metadata Management. For those of you who are familiar with the great taxonomy capabilities in SharePoint 2010, I’m sure many of you have spent time looking at an empty term store wondering where to start. If you’re lucky, you already have a well defined corporate taxonomy and should by now have leveraged our import capabilities to pre load SharePoint with the vocabulary you want your users to leverage for tagging and finding content. On the other hand, you could be like many customers I talk to who don’t even know where to start when it comes to developing a taxonomy, or have spent years in conference rooms debating what the right taxonomy should be. You’ve probably even heard someone say “I’m sure someone has already solved this problem”, and if that’s the case, that someone was the smartest person in the room for two key reasons. The first is that there are professional taxonomists who have already modeled most business domains and the second is that the people responsible for creating content in your company have already developed a community vocabulary or folksonomy that they use extensively.
