The Cloud as an Enterprise Social Networking Platform (ITBusinessEdge)
The more familiar enterprises become with the cloud, the more it seems to be uniquely suited for what is expected to be the two major developments in data functionality over the next decade: mobility and collaboration. It seems rather odd given the history of high-tech over the years that consumer devices are now driving changes in the workplace. However, most observers say the movement toward social networking is inevitable given that most knowledge works have already embedded their personal lives into Facebook and Twitter, so it's only natural to want those and other services to improve their business performance.
Office 365 Phone Support for Small Businesses? No Promises, Microsoft Says (Ars Technica)
We recently asked businesses and schools using Google Apps to rate Google's customer support, and found that it often falls short of being business-worthy. But Google is trying to change its reputation with 24/7 phone support to all Google Apps customers for any issue, which should theoretically alleviate some problems. So what about Google's cloud competition over at Microsoft? The folks at Redmond continually trumpet their enterprise experience and scoff at Google's supposedly immature products and support system. But at least on the one issue of phone support, Microsoft's policies prevent most customers from reaching technical support by phone.
Microsoft Exec: Google's Problems in L.A. Wouldn't Have Happened to Us (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft received a shot across the competitive bow in the cloud computing market when Google won a government deal in Los Angeles -- a deal that Microsoft also competed directly for. Since then, Google has run into some high-profile roadblocks with the L.A. deal. In a wide-ranging interview this month that we're running here as a Q&A, Tom Rizzo, Microsoft's senior director for online services, talked about that deal, along with a number of competitive issues surrounding Office 365.
Microsoft Exec: More Multi-platform Mobile Products Coming in 2012 (ZDNet)
It was a week of rapid-fire releases of Microsoft apps for non-Microsoft mobile platforms, but Microsoft’s not done yet. In 2012, expect more Microsoft productivity wares to come to various mobile platforms, including Android, said Tom Rizzo, Senior Director of Office 365. “We want to work where people work, whether it’s online or offline, and on various platforms,” Rizzo told me during a phone interview on December 16.
Microsoft Polishes Azure, But Are Users Convinced? (CloudPro)
News broke this week of Microsoft’s spring cleaning service currently being performed on the Windows Azure cloud computing portal. As well as paying lip service to the more routine elements of a platform – including improvements to billing, management and SQL Azure database functionalities – the company also announced a more tangible change in form of the first Windows Azure software development kit (SDK), which includes language libraries for Node.JS – a JavaScript based software platform often used to build web servers.
Windows 8 to Let You Use a Picture as Your Password (CNET)
Since traditional passwords and PIN numbers can be hard to remember and use, Microsoft wanted to cook up a different log-in method, especially one that would prove more user-friendly on touchscreen devices. As detailed in the latest Building Windows 8 Blog, Zach Pace, a program manager on Microsoft's You Centered Experience team, explained how using a photo as your password can make things simple to remember as well as secure. Already available in the Developer Preview, this new method consists of two components.

Changing SharePoint 2010’s Service Account Passwords (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
We’ve all seen it, it happens every day. A coworker gets mad, throws a burrito at the boss and the next thing you know they’re getting escorted out by security. If that person know your SharePoint service account passwords, and the burrito was big enough, your boss might want you to change them all to make sure the burrito-thrower doesn’t get into SharePoint and cause some problems. In this blog post I’ll walk through how to change all of the passwords in a SharePoint 2010 farm without it exploding in your face Wiley Coyote style.
A Few More Reasons to Attend AIIM Conference 2012 (AIIM)
1. The Pogue Factor: David Pogue is a really funny guy, ridiculously clever. Not only will he entertain but the guy is really one of the smartest and most practical technical folks of our generation. His writing for the NY Times is brilliant and easily understood by the masses but when you get Pogue live, it brings together all of his skills.

Best Practices: Turning Uncertainty into a Predictable Process via Tasks in a Project Schedule (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As the holidays approach, you know you need to plan for what to cook, what to buy, and timing everything so that your holiday feast is ready on time for your family and guests. For example, if you need to serve a turkey with a selection of side dishes at 3 P.M., what time do you have to start cooking each dish? With anything (whether work or home projects), it's good to have a plan so you can take uncertainty out of the equation.
