Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office: Threat to Microsoft SharePoint? (PCWorld)
In a blog post, Google has announced Cloud Connect, a plugin for Microsoft Office. In some ways, its shared/collaborative features go beyond what Microsoft itself officially offers with SharePoint Server. With this plugin, you can now share, backup and simultaneously edit Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents with co-workers without the need for sending attachments back and forth.

Microsoft Bites Back At Google's Office Cloud Play (CRN)
Microsoft this week reiterated its stance that when it comes to cloud computing, Google's heart isn't in it. Microsoft's bold proclamation comes as Google launches Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office, a plug-in that enables cloud collaboration capabilities in Microsoft Office desktop productivity apps and puts Office files and documents into the cloud.

Microsoft Shows Off Radical New UI, Could be Used in Windows 8 (DailyTech)
In a three and a half minute video, Microsoft may have shown the world what it has in store for the eagerly awaited Windows 8.  In the video Microsoft showed a radically different interface from past versions of Windows -- even Windows 7. Running on Surface 2, the touch-screen successor to the original Microsoft Surface, the device accepts input from a Windows Phone 7 handset (HTC HD7). Gone are the icons that drive Windows, OS X, and Linux operating systems of past and present.  In their place are "bubbles" that interacted with files and post streaming information off the internet.

Moonlighting Within Microsoft, in Pursuit of New Apps (New York Times)
IF you have a smartphone, you probably have apps on it to check the news, play games, help with shopping or further a hobby like travel or bird-watching. But chances are that you don’t yet have Bubblegum — a new app that lets you instantly dress up cellphone photos, tinting them in sepia or adding neon blue highlights, for instance, and then share the results on Facebook. That’s because Bubblegum is an app for a nascent market: people whose smartphones have the new Windows Phone 7 software inside. The phones have been on the market for only a few months in the United States. (Four models, including the Samsung Focus, the HTC Surround and the LG Quantum, are each $100 at the Microsoft Store.)

Playing around with Tracking Protection in IE9 (NetworkWorld)
Microsoft is touting the Tracking Protection feature of its Internet Explorer 9 browser, now in release candidate mode, but how well does it work? I gave it a tryout and found that by selecting content to block did result in ads disappearing, I still had trouble determining which content providers are benign and which are evil. I’m also not sure how much time the average browser user is going to take to sort that all out.

Weak PC Sales - What's the Cause? (NetworkWorld)
According to Network World, businesses are making lots of technology purposes, but consumers are not, with Dell and HP consumer spending growth near zero in the last quarter. Analysts cite several reasons, one being the economy of course. However, iPad sales also appear to have taken an impressive bite out of consumer PC sales, particularly at the low end of the PC market.

Backups Equal Disaster Recovery - Not So Fast (A Case in SharePoint)
I am beginning a series of blog posts that speak to a topic that many people have in the back of their mind but most are afraid to confront: Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity (BC).  I get asked about these a lot and specifically how they pertain to SharePoint.  The problem is that there are many more levels to data protection than just DR and BC, and they are not unique to SharePoint.  I am going to take a stab at going through the different levels that are encompassed within DR and BC from a data protection perspective and speak to a number of details in each that are particular to SharePoint.  In this first post I am just going to identify the different levels of protection (or lack of protection) and provide a summary in my own words for each.  In each subsequent post I will take a deep dive into each item and speak to my experiences and how the perspectives for each change based on the audience.  A CIO sees each level differently than the IT manager who see them differently from the System Administrator and so on.

Looking SharePoint Topologies as Patterns (MOSS 2007) (using(NaT) {return SharePoint;})
When I first had to deal with SharePoint 2007 server topologies I had to understand the different possible configurations so I can come up with a configuration that takes performance, availability, redundancy and flexibility in to account. So, I thought it would be cool to think of SharePoint server configurations as patterns and anti-patterns and be able to identify them quickly without going into details and be able to communicate it to others.

SharePoint 2010 Development Platform Using Boot From VHD (SharePointEduTech)
I have been working with Windows 7 for a while and knew about this wonderful feature called Boot from VHD. In a nutshell this feature allows Windows 7 to boot directly into a VHD and run just like a dual-boot system. The Boot from VHD allows the virtual to also tap into built in hardware like chip virtualization technology, USB devices, and more importantly memory. Because of this I have been able to demo Windows 7 using Aero and even use a VHD with Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V and build other virtuals for courses I am teaching.
