Google’s Sharepoint Tango With Redmond Heats Up
Published 09/30 by SharePoint Answers
Mountain View, CA - Google dialed up the heat on Sharepoint last week by launching a new Google Data API for Google Sites, the free set of services that let businesses and consumers build shared collaborative Web sites.
The announcement came out Sept. 24 on the Google Code blog. It promised that the APIs would let developers access most of Google Site's functions, including retrieve, create, modify, and delete pages and content; upload/download attachments; review revision history across a site; and display recent user activity.
Within minutes the net was abuzz with articles and posts like CMSWire's Google Goes After Sharepoint with New Sites API - but the truth is there's probably not enough heat from Google for Microsoft to notice yet. There already are many Sharepoint alternatives. And Google Sites has an awfully long way to go before it can be viewed as a serious Sharepoint competitor - it's just a new skin over the hosted wiki platform from Jotspot. Google acquired Jotspot in October 2006, and so far the resulting Google Sites has not exactly set the world on fire.
You can bet, however, that Microsoft has noticed. This is, after all, Google, with their deep pockets and tenacious focus on dismantling Microsoft app by app, opening up yet another front in the war.
Full documentation for the new Google Sites Data API is available at http://code.google.com/apis/sites/. The announcement linked to above offers further links to a Java developers guide and code samples. Techcrunch's story - Google Sites Get Liberated By New API - offers links to two examples of the API in action, including one product by the name of Sharepoint Move. You guess it: Sharepoint Move facilitates the process of migrating an existing Sharepoint installation into Google Sites.
