The Art of SharePoint Success: Governance - What It is & What It Isn't (CMSWire)
This month I am writing from the Microsoft SharePoint Conference in Anaheim where governance is a recurring theme. I’ve only been to a few sessions so far (I am writing on day 1 of the conference), but governance has been mentioned in every session I’ve been to so far. In the keynote, Jeff Teper claimed, “Governance is not an issue… we have lots of customers doing it on a large scale.” Good, so that’s all sorted then!

Apple: It's Time to Enterprise the App Store (ZDNet)
There’s nothing quite like a bit of healthy dissent among the ZDNet ranks to get the juices flowing. It’s even more amusing when you know that the opponents are both right and wrong at the same time, and you’re just aching for each of them to pull the Bat’leths and the Lirpas out. Zeees Kombat…. is to zee death. Seriously. When Gewirtz and SJVN go at it, it’s time to make a bag of popcorn and watch the fireworks. NERD FIGHT!

Is Your Identity and Access Infrastructure Ready for the Cloud? (WindowsITPro)
Most of the talk about cloud security and cloud identity has been directed at the cloud service provider and applications, and the various methods your company can use to provide single sign-on (SSO) and identity security working with these apps. At the same time, we shouldn’t neglect the state of our own identity and access infrastructure (IAM). Is it ready to handle the new requirements and challenges that federation and cloud services will put on it? Fortunately, there’s a free tool available to help you assess this.

Microsoft: Browser Standards Drive Innovation (ZDNet)
There is less difference between the major web browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer than ever before, according to Microsoft developer evangelist Martin Beeby. Web standards and developer ecosystems help drive browser innovation, Beeby told an audience of developers at the HTML5 Live one-day conference in London on Wednesday, adding that since the release of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), there are fewer differences between the major browser vendors.

Microsoft: Why Innovate When You can Litigate? (ITWorld)
Early Sunday morning, Microsoft's legal team triumphed over its developers once again, announcing the tenth license agreement with an Android vendor of mobile phones and patents. The tone of Microsoft's press release on its patent agreement with Compal Electronics, Inc. was dry and unremarkable compared to the legal team's blog about the same agreement, which seemed positively bellicose in comparison. The patent arrangement, made for undisclosed terms and undisclosed patents, was notable in that it also implicated ChromeOS as an infringing technology.

IT Security & Network Security News & Reviews: Windows 8 Won`t Escape Security Threats: 10 Flaws to Look For (eWeek)
Although it’s more than a year away, Microsoft just can’t stop talking about Windows 8. Nearly each passing day, the company has something to say about its next operating system version, and for the most part, each bit of news is quite interesting. Lately, Microsoft has been focusing many of its discussions on Windows 8 security. The company says that with improvements made to Windows Defender, Internet Explorer and the operating system’s kernel, it should be able to safeguard the software far more effectively than it has in the past. Microsoft’s efforts have become so well-received by security experts that some are wondering if users of the operating system will need anything other than the security tools that come with the software. But given Microsoft’s history, perhaps it’s not such a good idea to get so excited about Windows 8 security. Will it be more secure than Windows 7? Probably. But to say that the platform will undoubtedly become a near-impenetrable software package is laughable. Like it or not, hackers will find the inevitable security holes in Windows 8. This eWEEK slide show gives a hint at what kind of security holes Windows 8 users should watch out for when they finally get their hands on the operating system next year.

Will the Cloud Change Programming? (CNET)
The early preview of Dart, a new alternative to JavaScript for Web programming unveiled by Google earlier this week, is the latest entrant into the pantheon of programming languages. As such, it's hardly a rarity. There are hundreds of programming languages--perhaps thousands if experimental and academic variants are included. That said, the number of widely used languages is much smaller, numbering perhaps in the dozens, with fewer still broadly relevant to general-purpose server operations and Web software.

Using the SharePoint 2010 Client Object Model to Return User Information (SharePoint Dev Notes)
In a recent project, I needed a way to quickly get some additional details about a user from the user information list. The project is making use of search and in the core results the only item being returned is the display name of the author. Since I needed to get some more details on the user, I needed a quick way to lookup the user by display name from the user information list.

The following is a SharePoint 2010 Web Standards and Usability Quick Reference Guide following EPC Group’s best practices for SharePoint GUI development (master page) and configuration best practices.

Netcast 95 - I'm not a Dev (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
In this episode I reveal I passed all four SharePoint 2010 exams. I also discuss how 'someone' broke my blog, and how I fixed it. Then I talk about how the mobile view that I so carefully disabled got reenabled on my blog. I also discuss a weird upgrade issue I encountered where I couldn't get out of SharePoint 2007 mode. Finally I talk about how you can export TechNet articles to PDF for easy offline reading.

Document ID Feature - An Overview (The Scribble SharePoint Blog)
The document ID feature allows you to refer to a document by a unique code, instead of a possibly unreliable URL. Once you have enabled this site collection feature you will see a 'Document ID' field included in the properties for a given document.

Working with Menus and Navigation Objects in SharePoint Server 2010 (ECM) (MSDN)
You declare horizontal and vertical menu instructions for navigation in XML for the master page. Two classes are used to make navigation work: PortalSiteMapDataSource and PortalSiteMapProvider. The PortalSiteMapProvider object provides the site hierarchy (navigation structure) and monitors the relationship between nodes. The PortalSiteMapDataSource object maps navigation features from the PortalSiteMapProvider and filters navigation elements to determine which are viewable to the user in the horizontal or vertical menus or in breadcrumbs.
