Hands on with Office 365: A Smart Option for Small Businesses (VentureBeat)
If you’re a small business or startup, Microsoft Office 365 should be on your technology shortlist. It’s a cloud-based suite based on the world’s most popular office software that launched in late June. It will likely get small businesses and enterprises to start considering cloud software solutions if they haven’t already. Microsoft also hopes this offering can edge into the space Google Apps has had to itself for several years. After testing the suite’s small business tools for several weeks, I’m convinced that it’s a strong option for small businesses, startups, and enterprises. It’s possibly even better for small companies than Google Apps. With a promise of 99.9% uptime, generally reasonable pricing, a deep list of features, and rich cross-application compatibility, I can see many businesses wanting to use Office 365.

Can Microsoft Make You ‘Bing’? (New York Times)
MIKE NICHOLS has a poster on his office wall. It shows the young Muhammad Ali glaring down at a fallen Sonny Liston, the bruising heavyweight who had seemed invincible — until Ali beat him, in 1964, in one of the biggest upsets in sports history, and then beat him again a year later. “The triumphant underdog,” Mr. Nichols says, nodding toward the wall.

Microsoft Windows 8: Strategy Updates at BUILD in September (MSPmentor)
Microsoft is expected to update its Windows 8 strategy during a new conference called BUILD (Sept. 13-16, Anaheim, Calif.). A teaser for the event suggests that Windows 8 will have a bigger market impact than the Windows 95 launch back in August 1995. Details about BUILD are still sketchy but MSPmentor has to ask the obvious question: Can Microsoft once again spark the imagination of ISVs (independent software developers) with Windows 8′s touch interface?

Windows Phone 7 Has No Soul (PC Magazine)
I decided to visit both an AT&T store and a T-Mobile store to check out the Windows Phone 7 devices. I did this because nobody I know has one I can play with, and Microsoft doesn't seem too keen on showing off the devices. I noticed immediate differences between the AT&T and T-Mobile stores. The AT&T greeters and floor sales folks are extremely aggressive and helpful, and the store was nice and lively. The T-Mobile store was more laid back. Nobody even said hello. It's as if the T-Mobile folks know that they are doomed and will gobbled up by AT&T at any minute. Both stores have Windows Phone 7 well displayed. One $49 Samsung phone with an AMOLED screen at the AT&T store was a real gem.

Are Internet Explorer Users Dumb? (CNN)
Are users of other Web browsers smarter than the people who use Microsoft's Internet Explorer? A new survey doesn't quite say so. But it sure as heck suggests it. The survey by AptiQuant, a Vancouver-based Web consulting company, gave more than 100,000 participants an IQ test, while monitoring which browser they used to take the test.

Microsoft's Web Map Exposes Phone, PC Locations (CNET)
Microsoft has collected the locations of millions of laptops, cell phones, and other Wi-Fi devices around the world and makes them available on the Web without taking the privacy precautions that competitors have, CNET has learned. The vast database available through Live.com publishes the precise geographical location, which can point to a street address and sometimes even a corner of a building, of Android phones, Apple devices, and other Wi-Fi enabled gadgets.

The PC Isn't Dead, but it's Still a Post-PC Era (CNET)
In early June, market researcher IDC cut its forecast growth for PCs in 2011 from 7.1 percent to 4.2 percent. Gartner Group, another IT analyst firm, had earlier trimmed its numbers. Meanwhile, Apple iPad sales continue to skyrocket, with 183 percent growth compared to the year-ago quarter. Android tablets remain more of a mixed bag when it comes to gaining buyers, but they'll gain traction over time as well.

When to Use Which Web Part Template? (Waldek Mastykarz)
If you have used the Visual Studio 2010 SharePoint Developer Tools you have probably noticed that there are multiple SharePoint Project Item Templates to create Web Parts from. Find out which of them make the most sense in what scenarios. The Visual Studio 2010 SharePoint Developer Tools are the new tools for SharePoint developers that simplify the process of creating SharePoint solutions and improve developer productivity. The tools provide a number of templates for various SharePoint assets among which for Web Parts. Out of the box the tools contain two templates for creating Web Parts: Web Part and Visual Web Part.

Output Caching in SharePoint 2010 - It Doesn't Work, Err it Does... (ACS Blogs)
Blog #7 in How I Successfully Upgraded eBay to SharePoint 2010 - See Previous Blog In Series. In my last blog post I made a comment that Output Caching does not work in 2010.  Well, it works, but that's the problem.  SharePoint 2010 has elements that are very poorly designed...but we all knew that didn't we? What is object caching?  It's an ASP.NET feature that allows the HTML of the page to be cached in the web server's memory and very quickly be presented to the clients (albeit slowly with high latency).  Output caching can be turned on on your publishing sites in the Site Actions, Site Settings page for the site collection.  Again, once turned on, the HTML is cached....this is bad.  Yes, I said it is bad.  Why?

June CU Post Update Regression? (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
I'm getting a little frustrated after feeling a little strong armed into updating to the June CU update. While I LOVE being an early adopter and LOVE being on the latest and greatest, I haven't been so happy with the latest update. Microsoft has been anxious to get people on SP1, and for valid reasons… the message of sharing SP1 they really encouraged people to install the June CU and most recently the update to the update, but should we have one more update to that one? So yeah, we were doing an upgrade and were told we'd have a better experience if we were running it, so we considered it, and figured if we had any support issues with just SP1, the PFEs and CSS Customer support reps would say our issues might be fixed in the latest update. Now I'm feeling a little foolish. Spence and Todd Carter (June CU Regression) had the right idea, while Spence has now been convinced that we should be pushing June CU. I still agree with the mantra: "Don't install the CUs it if you don't need them." Here's more information about the June CU re-release.

Migrate Managed Metadata Service Database (PointBeyond)
Recently I came across the situation where I wanted to migrate the Managed Metadata Service database from one farm to another. Many differing solutions were mentioned on the interweb however I decided to just backup and restore the Managed Metadata database from old to new farm and see what happened. The new farm already had a Managed Metadata Service instance but had not been configured with any terms. I was also migrating a content database which had a few Managed Metadata columns and lots of items referencing the terms. I was therefore a little anxious as to whether my migrated content would display the migrated terms and if it would be possible to re-sync everything following migration or whether there might be some GUIDs that would not match. It turns out not to be so bad. Below are the steps taken to achieve this.
