Hosted SharePoint: The Next SaaS Commodity? (MSPmentor)
When RackSpace recently announced plans to offer hosted Microsoft SharePoint, it signaled both an opportunity and a warning sign for managed services providers. Is hosted SharePoint the next commodity SaaS service. Yes and no. Here’s why.
HP Slate to Run Windows 7, but on Which Chip? (CNET)
The HP Slate will use Windows 7, but what isn't known is which chip will power the Apple iPad rival from Hewlett-Packard. This is an important question, as there's a world of difference between an Intel Atom processor and, let's say, a low-power Core 2 or Intel's latest-and-greatest chips based on the "Nehalem" design, referred to commercially as the Core i3, i5, and i7. Atom chips (with one exception) use a single-core processor--which can struggle under moderate to heavy workloads--while the more powerful Core 2 and i series chips use two processing cores.
Windows Phone OS 7.0 and the Promise of Change (Softpedia)
Next generation Windows Phones are within the reach of our hands, Redmond-based software company Microsoft stated on Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona when unveiling to the world the Windows Phone 7 Series and Windows Phone OS 7.0. What the announcement promises is a new beginning, a new experience, and a set of new smartphones that will not be only upgraded versions of the already existing ones. There is a new approach to the end user experience, with the inclusion of six hubs, the integration of various services, and with the promise of a strong ecosystem that will mark a step forward in the evolution of smartphones and mobile operating systems, all of which are meant to change the way we see smartphones today.
Microsoft Risks Margins as Office Business Fights Off Google (BusinessWeek)
Microsoft Corp. President Stephen Elop is preparing for the biggest shakeup to the $19 billion Office business in a decade as the company races Google Inc. to sell Internet-based programs. Two years into his career as head of Microsoft’s business software unit, Elop says cloud computing and social-networking sites have created a “constructive disruption” that could be more of an opportunity than a threat. Office 2010, due by June, will include a free Web-based version for the first time, matching similar software from Google. Future updates may add Twitter-like functions that allow users to post short messages.
Cloud Computing: 10 Cloud Computing Trends That Are Rapidly Catching On (eWeek)
Cast Iron Systems is one of the many IT companies you don't hear much about, yet it is playing an instrumental role in new-generation, Web-based business. Its software makes things move fast through the Web. You can judge the quality and value of a company by the partners and customers it attracts. For example, Cast Iron has been a premier integration partner of Salesforce.com and Oracle CRM On-Demand for years; it is also providing the software that connects enterprise applications with Microsoft Dynamics ERP and CRM. Cast Iron also is teaming with Microsoft to accelerate data migration and application integration for the Windows Azure platform. Cast Iron CEO Ken Comée has firsthand knowledge about the cloud/SAAS trends, and he shares some of his views with eWEEK readers in this slide show.
Cyberattack Cripples US (You Mean You Missed It?) (TG Daily)
Yesterday, a massive cyberattack took place against the US. Organised by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), the aim of the Cyber ShockWave exercise was to examine how the government could develop a real-time response to a large-scale cyber crisis.

Determining the Configuration Database in a SharePoint 2007 Farm (Krichie – That SharePoint Guy)
For whatever reason you may have, you may find the need to identify the Configuration Database in your server farm programmatically. The problem is that it is not directly exposed for consumption via the object model. What I mean by this, is that there is no single identifiable property that tells you that the database your enumerating is in fact the Configuration Database. In V2, it was a simple matter of using the SPConfigDatabase object within the Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration namespace, but with V3, this was marked obsolete, with no reference to what you can use in V3. Another issue is that the new object type for the configuration database (SPConfigurationDatabase) is not exposed publicly in the object model.

New: Office Developer Atlas (Adventures in Office, SharePoint & .NET Development)
The Office Product Marketing group has released a new Silverlight-based training set to introduce you to developer investments in 2010 including VBA, Fluent UI, and the Office Backstage. The app was released yesterday to MSDN and you can access it from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/msdn/en-us/office/media/Atlas/Default.html
Another Intro to CAML Blog (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
Yes.. there’s lots of CAML blogs out there… lots of tutorials… lots of references… So, why add to the noise?? Well… two good reasons: 1) I need to blog about something. 2) My session at SPTechCon was on SharePoint Web Services which rely heavily on CAML in SharePoint 2007 (less so in 2010 thanks to LINQ to SharePoint, but that’s another blog).
Data Binding SharePoint 2010 List Items in Silverlight 3 (Andrew Connell)
Recently I ran into a little challenge recently on a Silverlight 3 project using the SharePoint 2010 Client Object Model (ClientOM). I wanted to bind a collection of list items I was getting back from SharePoint to a list box. I wanted to have a way to easily use the elegant data binding syntax in Silverlight without having to write managed code… something I could reuse over and over in a few projects.

Guest Blog by Randy Franklin Smith - Filling the Gap in SharePoint Audit Logging (The Bamboo Team Blog)
For the past several years I've specialized in helping people understand the Windows security log, but the truth is that operating system logs only take you so far. In today's environment of increasing compliance and security requirements, you need the same level of auditing at the application layer as is found at the operating system and network device layers. A great example of such an application is SharePoint. As more and more information and processes move to SharePoint, it becomes critical for compliance and security requirements to monitor and audit SharePoint activity. And with regard to logging SharePoint security events I have good news and bad news ... and then more good news.
