Is SharePoint an Obstacle in Your Organization? (AIIM)
With all the hype around everything "social" today, SharePoint is sometimes portrayed in a negative light and an obstacle to enabling collaboration.  Competitive pure play social vendors want to blame the tool, point out SharePoint's short-comings, and hype their own products as new and different.   Yet is new and different really any better?  Is SharePoint really the obstacle?  Or are the real obstacles your enterprise IT department’s inability to quickly respond to business demands and the inertia of large organizations to change culture?

3 Things Windows 8 Can Teach SharePoint 2012 (CMSWire)
Windows 8 was slowly revealed to the public during the course of 2011. A number of unofficial leaks were soon followed by an official "developer" preview in September at the Microsoft BUILD conference. The final product is due sometime in 2012 and is expected to be one of Microsoft's most important product launches ever. After the disaster that is generally accepted to have been Windows Vista, Microsoft recovered well with Windows 7. Seen as everything its predecessor wasn’t, mainly reliable and responsive, Windows 7 has been a huge success for the company. It cannot afford to drop the ball with Windows 8, and so far the signs are positive.

War of the Cloud Services (ComputerWorld)
In the beginning, it was Macintosh vs. Windows. Then it was Windows against OS/2 against the Mac. Followed by Netscape Navigator head-to-head against Internet Explorer. The history of technology is replete with these standoffs, as companies and their developers square off against each other to try to capture the most customers, and therefore the most revenue. Today, the competition at the center of the attention is the mobile device sector. Which phone is better, the iPhone or the Android devices? Some would suggest that the real point of contention is at the operating system level with iOS vs. Android.

12 Microsoft Hot Buttons for 2012 (RedmondMag)
This isn't your typical January predictions column. This is more like my Post-It list of things I'll be watching for from the 'Softies in the coming year. It's a scary but potentially exciting reminder of just how crazy-busy 2012 is going to be for Microsoft customers, partners and watchers. Last year was an "in-between" year for Microsoft. There weren't a whole lot of brand-new product launches -- but 2012 will be the exact opposite. Can Microsoft deliver? How well? Will it be enough to appease employees, Wall Street and users with Apples in their eyes? Here's my short list of Microsoft topics for 2012, in no particular order:

Opinion: Microsoft Should Make Its Own Windows 8 PCs (PC Pro)
The PC world is stumbling, and if it falls it’s going to bring Microsoft tumbling down with it. But there’s a solution: it’s time for Microsoft to start making PCs. The tech world is moving towards tablets and apps, and that could cause trouble for Microsoft in the long run. At the moment, more than nine in ten computers run Windows, but sales of PCs are essentially flat, while sales of smartphones, tablets and Macs are skyrocketing, posting growth well above traditional PCs for 22 consecutive quarters.

CNET's Next Big Thing of 2012: The Ecosystem. Should We Fear It? (CNET)
When is a phone just a phone? A TV just a TV? A Blu-Ray player just a Blu-Ray player? How about last year? Because in 2012 and beyond, the next wave of consumer electronics evolution is all about the "ecosystem." That concept, in fact, is the topic of CNET's Next Big Thing Supersession at CES 2012. We'll be talking about this idea of the ecosystem, and how it's changing the landscape of consumer electronics--and turning media and service companies into hardware partners, if not actual hardware makers.

10 Enterprise Social Networking Obstacles (InformationWeek)
I enjoy telling enterprise 2.0 success stories, and I've told a lot of them over the past year. Success stories are seductive because they are much easier to obtain than stories about social business failures. Vendors serve up success stories on a silver platter, whenever they can convince a customer to serve as a reference.

7 Things You Should Do Before You Escalate to Microsoft Support (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
We had a meeting today to discuss what we should do prior to escalating a ticket to Microsoft. There's obviously a lot of troubleshooting that Tier 2, Tier 3, and Engineering should do prior to an escalation to Microsoft, and all of that due diligence, but I wanted to put together an escalation checklist that goes beyond it. Kudos to Microsoft Support and Microsoft PFEs.

Monkey Patching and SharePoint / Office 365 (Elumenotion)
This post is a prelude for the one to follow in which I will show an application of this technique that overrides the workspace sizing routine in SharePoint 2010. JavaScript is a wonderful language. It is easily accessible to anyone who understands C style syntax. This includes C# developers. However JavaScript is a dynamic language. In my experience most C# developers write poor JavaScript in a style that is appropriate to C#. However, getting the most out of SharePoint requires a good understanding of JavaScript and I am not talking about using jQuery or the Client Object Model. I am talking about fundamentals!

What are Claims - Using Claims in SharePoint (ITPro)
Recently, I was at the Microsoft SharePoint 2011 Conference (SPC2011), and there were several hot topics presented – there were several sessions on claims and using claims in SharePoint 2010 for interesting security-related scenarios like authentication. This topic is particularly important in the identity management space right now.

SharePoint Search and RTF File Indexing (Geoff Varosky's Blog)
Found out today while answering a #SPHelp question for my buddy Eric Harlan, that SharePoint 2010 does not natively index RTF files, it requires an iFilter.
Luckily, there is an easy answer to it, which came back in a Google Books preview of Pro SharePoint 2010 Search. Click the link for details – http://go.gvaro.net/tLqruO

Social Media vs. Social Business (Insights on Collaboration, ECM, IT Strategy & SharePoint)
When we think about social networks, the big 3 come to mind:  Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.   These sites were built or mostly evolved as consumer platforms.  The audience is everyone in the world and the revenue model is commerce – through advertising or sales of products/services.    Consumer social media (or social commerce) is all about the power of the network and “word-of -mouth” marketing.
