3 Trends in IT That Could Affect SharePoint (WindowsITPro)
Why should you keep an eye on these trends? Because they might, in the future, affect how you deliver services and software to your fellow employees and your customers. And because they influence worker tasks, content, and collaboration, they’re sure to show up, in some way, in SharePoint, someday. Look at the most commonly mentioned trend from this year and last year: the consumerization of IT. You probably experienced it with end users wanting to use devices other than what your company issues or wondering why they can’t have the same user friendliness in workplace apps that they get from consumer- and entertainment-related apps.

Windows 8′s Answer to the Mac App Store Comes Into Focus Tuesday (All Things D)
After years of leaving it to Windows software makers to sell their own wares, Microsoft’s flagship operating system is finalizing its plans to get into the app store business. The move won’t come until the debut of Windows 8 — expected next year — but Redmond will share more details on Tuesday at an event in San Francisco. Microsoft revealed that Windows 8 would have a built-in software marketplace back when it first showed the revamped interface at our D9 show in June, though at that point the company wouldn’t comment on the “Store” icon that was clearly visible in the home screen it showed. Microsoft did offer a few more details at its Build developer conference in September.

Preston Gralla: Microsoft has Discovered the Virtues of Openness (ComputerWorld)
You know the stereotype: Microsoft is the sworn enemy of openness, unwilling to open its code or hardware to others. It's a monopolist bent on world domination, willing to use its lawyers and market strength to ensure that Windows and Office don't face any serious competition. In years past, that stereotype had some truth to it. Microsoft certainly used its monopoly power to quash competition. (And that's making news again. Bill Gates will be testifying in a lawsuit in which Novell charges that Microsoft used monopolistic practices to try to kill the once-popular WordPerfect word processing software.)

Cloud Computing Disrupts the Vendor Landscape (ComputerWorld)
If you think cloud computing is a disruptive force within the enterprise, just imagine what the cloud is doing to the vendor landscape. The sheer number of cloud players - or companies that claim to be cloud players -- is staggering. By some estimates there are more than 2,000 software as a service (SaaS) companies alone. At this early point in the cloud revolution, there are certainly front runners, but the field is wide open.

5 Ways Microsoft Can Make Windows 8 Tablets a Hit (CIO)
According to a report from Forrester Research, consumer desire to purchase Windows 8 tablets has suffered a massive decrease, slumping from 46 percent in the first quarter of the year to a mediocre 25 percent six months later. That's not good news for a product still a close to a year away from seeing an official launch. Can Microsoft produce a tablet operating system for both consumers and business users to rave about? Yes, especially if the Windows 8 development team takes the time to consider and act on these five points.

Knowledge Itself is Not Something You Can Manage: Jeff Stemke, Knowledge Strategist (Economic Times)
He speaks from experience - 35 years working with oil major Chevron, where he led the implementation of its best practice transfer programme in the 1990s that resulted in significant cost savings. Subsequently, Stemke designed Chevron's KM programme with Microsoft's SharePoint collaboration software, helping institutionalise a culture of knowledge sharing within the company's globally distributed employees. He tells Vikas Kumar why KM is even more relevant now and how it could help companies address some of their urgent concerns around attracting and retaining talent.

SharePoint: QueryFeatures Issue When Performing a Feature Upgrade (ITPro)
A while ago I had to upgrade a SharePoint solution for a customer. Everything was tested thoroughly and it all worked on my machine. Full of confidence I went to the customer and we executed my PowerShell script to update the solution. And guess what? An error occurred. In this article I want to show you, a relevant part of, my PowerShell script, how I did the upgrade, what error occurred, why and how I solved it.

Products Configuration Wizard Failed and You Have No Clue Why (Waldek Mastykarz)
When upgrading your SharePoint 2010 environment to a Service Pack or a Cumulative Update there is a chance that the update process fails. Although the error message contains a link to a log file it is of a little help leaving you without a single clue what went wrong. There is however one more place where you can take a look to know exactly what caused the upgrade process to fail.

Using SharePoint Search to Display the Documents of the Current User (Corey Roth [MVP])
I see requests for this in the SharePoint forums a lot and I always figured it was pretty easy to do with a few lines of code.  Sometimes users want to display a list of documents that the worked on throughout the farm.  The CoreResultsWebPart has the ability to execute fixed static queries.  However, there is no way for you to specify the current user in the query.  I had a need for this myself soon so I thought I would try it out and see if I could implement it.  It turns our this can be done with two lines of code.

The Wake-up Call (AIIM)
Having spent most of my career working with structured data, I was initially happy to see that the ECM project plan presented at the AIIM ECM Master class, looked a lot like a systems development project plan. Requirements gathering, design, testing, etc., lots of similar tasks. There is a significant difference between ECM and those other applications; ok there are many differences, but I’m going to talk about just one today. The difference that has my attention today is duplicates.

Sharing the Point Tour Heads to South America in January (Bamboo Team Blog)
The Sharing the Point express tour is gearing up again!  Heads up, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Antarctica ... the tour is heading your way in January for Sharing the Point South America. As you may recall, it was a distinct honor for me to be invited to join the inaugural Sharing the Point tour when the SharePoint community initiative launched in Asia in March of this year.  (It was also Bamboo's pleasure to host the tour finale in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, home of our Research and Development headquarters).  I likened my participation on the tour to that of an "embedded journalist," serving as lead blogger for the tour, which featured SharePoint household names Dux Raymond Sy, Joel Oleson, Mark Miller, Michael Noel, Paul Swider, and Rob LaMear sharing their expertise at unforgettable community events in Beijing, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh City.

SharePoint MVP Dux Raymond Sy Presents Live Online O'Reilly Training Courses, Offers Special Discount for Bamboo Nation (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Did you know that O'Reilly, one of the most trusted names in technology books, recently began offering live online training courses?  Not only is it that a fact, but the man who literally wrote the book on using SharePoint for Project Management, O'Reilly author and SharePoint MVP Dux Raymond Sy is among the roster of course instructors. Dux has already served as instructor for a SharePoint 2010 Jumpstart course (the initial offering of which has already concluded), but he's got two more course offerings coming soon:

To complete this task, you must do the following: Create a Visual Web Part Project; Generate LINQ to SharePoint Proxy Code; Add Code to Create the SharePoint Controls; Add the LINQ Queries to the Project; Test the Solution.
