10 Features That Will Make Your SharePoint Search Shine (CMSWire)
Search giants like Google and Bing provide powerful features that allow you to do great things with search. But, do you know about the possibilities available with SharePoint search? We’ve pulled together 10 ways to help you make your SharePoint search shine. You might be surprised at all of the exciting new features available with SharePoint search.

Gartner Wrong When They say that Gmail is Ready to Tackle Outlook (WindowsITPro)
Gartner say that Gmail is ready to tackle Microsoft Outlook But the battle is really between Google Apps and Office 365. I sometimes wonder about the sanity of Gartner analysts. That thought wandered into my mind this morning when I read the headline in the U.K. Daily Telegraph newspaper proclaiming “Gmail ready to tackle Microsoft Outlook”. Apparently some of the leading analysts in Gartner have concluded that five years after its introduction, Gmail is finally ready to worry Microsoft. The report went on to say: "The road to its enterprise enlightenment has been long and bumpy, but Gmail should now be considered a mainstream cloud email supplier," said Matthew Cain, research vice president at Gartner. "While Gmail's enterprise email market share currently hovers around one per cent, it has close to half of the market for enterprise cloud email.”

Windows 8 Could Pull In Rapid Enterprise Upgrades: 10 Reasons Why (eWeek)
At the BUILD conference last week, Microsoft spent a lot of time talking about Windows 8, the next version of its operating system, set to launch next year. On many fronts, Windows 8 appears to be a worthwhile purchase for consumers. It will run well on tablets, come with a neat new interface and, according to Microsoft, offer better security. Since PC vendors will, as always, ship it with their latest PC models, consumers might have no other choice but to run Windows 8 the next time they buy a computer.

7 Ways to Get Started With Cloud Computing (ReadWriteCloud)
If you are a cloud virgin, what is the best way to get started and learn more about what the cloud can offer? Here are several suggestions, from the perspective of someone who has moderate IT knowledge and not necessarily the full backing and support resources of an IT department behind them. The idea here is to demonstrate some of the key concepts of cloud computing, as well as introduce you to some cool tools. We have also tried to focus on those that offer free trials or services that are relatively inexpensive and easy to get started with.

The Cloud Hazard No One Talks About (InfoWorld)
I've been pretty cynical about the cloud and the relentless marketing drumbeat behind it. But I have to admit that the migration to the cloud is happening at a pace faster than I thought possible. Microsoft's full-on cloud mentality with Windows 8 provides only the most dramatic recent evidence. But I'm not sure that we've spent enough time thinking through the implications.

Update on September Security Bulletin (MS11-074) and SharePoint 2010 Issues (Stefan Goßner)
On September 13, 2011, Microsoft released security bulletin MS11-074 - Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege. The security bulletin had a security rating of Important. Packages released as part of the security bulletin have been targeted at various different Office client and server products. As such, both Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 products have also been affected by the security updates. Please review the security bulletin for detailed information about the products and files that have been affected by the packages. Since the security bulletin has a security rating of Important, it is expected that Windows Server Update Services may automatically download the packages on the servers that have the service enabled.  As with all SharePoint updates, the SharePoint Products and Technologies configuration wizard must be executed to ensure that the SharePoint farm is not left in an inconsistent state.  For more information, please review Known issues and additional information about this security update.

The Need for Change Management (AIIM)
There is a natural progression in the growth and development of a software development team or start-up. As the problems and your solutions get more and more complex, the tools you require to manage these solutions needs to be able to handle these changes. What would software development be without change management? The two are inseparable. To successfully develop and deliver your solution, you must put in place the tools and processes and knowledge required to successfully perform change management. Period.

Chris Riley – Guest Blogger – 7 Things You Need to Know About ECM in SharePoint – Part 2 (Offline SharePoint)
In my first blog post, I discussed how SharePoint 2010 has matured for ECM and some points to keep in mind regarding SharePoint and enterprise content management, namely that SharePoint is a platform and not an application and that ECM is not a technology but a set of practices and methodologies. In this blog entry, I’ll talk some more about the top things you need to consider when building your ECM in SharePoint including:

SharePoint is 'Facebook for the Enterprise'? - No It's Not (The Scribble SharePoint Blog)
Microsoft held a 'Financial Analyst' meeting last week, headed up by COO Kevin Turner. Lots of interesting things were discussed: The business division of MS is now a healthy 32% of the company; Office 2010 is the most successful version of the software to date; SharePoint is the most successful Microsoft product ever. All good stuff. Except this quote from Turner: "SharePoint is Facebook for the enterprise"

SharePoint 2010, Office 365: There is more to Managed Metadata Services than the Managed Metadata Column Type (Jennifer Mason)
I am writing this post because I think there is a little confusion out there about Managed Metadata Services and the limitations. I know that I am personally guilty of talking about the limitations of the Service, but really mean the limitations of the column type. This is important because there are so many great features that I feel might be getting a bad name because they are getting all lumped together. In this blog post I wanted to highlight some of these items at a high level, hopefully bringing some clarity to the subject.

Announcing Workflow Conductor 2.0 for SharePoint 2007 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Back in July, Workflow Conductor version 2.0 offered up some great new features to SharePoint 2010 users, but that doesn't mean we forgot about all of those people stuck in 2007 (SharePoint 2007, that is. Not people still listening to 'Fergalicious' and watching 'Cavemen'). We know a lot of companies haven't made the jump to 2010 yet,  but just because a SharePoint environment is getting a little older doesn't mean that it can't learn some new tricks. To prove it, Workflow Conductor 2.0 is now available for SharePoint 2007, which means systems don't have to act their age. Here are a few of the new things you get with 2.0:

Guest Blog by John Kleeman - SharePoint: 9, Formal Training: 1 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I'm John Kleeman, Chairman of Questionmark, and in this guest blog entry, I'd like to share a liberating idea that is sweeping the world of corporate learning. Once upon a time, if you needed to learn a task, you embarked on a formal training course, learned the new skill or knowledge and came back to your job to apply it. Formal training still has an important place, but with the Internet age, knowledge workers are expected to learn new things more often and more easily and there are new ways of learning. Increasingly, businesses understand that learning and development really works most effectively in a 70+20+10 model:
