Set Early Plans to Manage Growth of Your SharePoint 2010 Deployment (SearchContentManagement)
Since its first release roughly a decade ago, SharePoint has become increasingly popular with organizations of all sizes for its content management and collaboration capabilities. It has grown so much, in fact, that it’s easy to find enterprises that use SharePoint 2010 features for at least departmental and project collaboration, if not for enterprise-wide purposes. Many organizations, however, overlook the costs and long-term problems associated with organic SharePoint growth.
The Art of SharePoint Success: Strategy - What Is SharePoint? (CMSWire)
The story so far… This is the sixth article in my series exploring The Art of SharePoint Success, a framework I’ve developed to enable organizations to achieve long term business benefits from investments in SharePoint based initiatives. There are four elements to the framework: 1.Governance 2.Strategy 3.Architecture 4.Transition. Last month we wrapped up the discussion on Governance and this month we’re moving onto the second element, Strategy. In the next few articles we’re going to explore the business case for SharePoint, discuss a number of ‘lenses’ which organizations can use to focus their SharePoint strategy, and discuss why you really do need a SharePoint Strategy. But first…
Why Moving Its Office Suite to 'Cloud' Could be Microsoft's Biggest Test in Post-PC Era (The Economic Times)
Ever since it unveiled Office 365, the cloud-based version of its best-selling Office software suite in June, Microsoft has been on unfamiliar ground. For the Redmond-based company, whose operating software continues to power a bulk of computers worldwide, this is something it has never attempted before - certainly not to its most popular product, and on such a massive scale.
Microsoft Ready to Unveil New Public-private Cloud-migration Tools, Strategy (ZDNet)
Microsoft is close to announcing some new migration tools and strategies designed to help customers to move from the private cloud to the public cloud. Company officials have been hinting for months that changes around Active Directory were on tap. On November 15, Robert Youngjohns, President of Microsoft North America Sales, made it even clearer that something big is in the works during his recent appearance at the UBS Global Technology & Services Conference. From a transcript of Youngjohns remarks:
Microsoft`s Windows 8 Design Goals: 10 Important Features (eWeek)
For many IT managers the decisions they make depend upon the Microsoft’s Windows launch cycle. It used to be that an upgrade to the next version of Windows was a given because the next version represented a huge advance from the earlier generation that took advantage equally massive improvements in the hardware. These days, enterprises and IT managers can take more time deciding if they want to upgrade to the latest Windows generation. As a result there are still many companies still running Windows XP. Some are just starting to upgrade from XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7.
Why It's Not Too Late for Windows Phone 7 (PCWorld)
Windows Phone 7 has what it takes to be a serious contender in the smartphone arena. Microsoft has some significant ground to make up, though, in order to compete with platforms like Android and iOS. But, is it too late? One of my PCWorld peers, Joseph Fieber, recently wrote a post describing why he believes that Windows Phone 7 is too little, too late. Fieber sums up with, “The mobile-market ship has sailed, and while business users will continue to use Microsoft’s products, they will more frequently access them through the devices and operating systems of their competitors.”

Eliminate Development Hurdles to Support High Utility SharePoint Implementations for Specific Needs (Blogging Thoughts on SharePoint)
The folks at Bamboo Solutions want us all to build more customized solutions with Microsoft® SharePoint®, they just don’t want to see us hard coding them. Makes sense when you consider that the best way to get users to adopt a platform solution like SharePoint is to provide them with business specific features that deliver just what they. Makes even more sense when the SharePoint power users for the business can include what Gartner Group calls “Citizen Developers”, highly technical individuals who, nevertheless, do not want to deal with code.
Best Practices for SharePoint Cultural Change Management - From the SharePoint Consulting Trenches (AIIM)
I wanted to share with the AIIM Community the overview of a White Paper that myself and my team at EPC Group.net have been working on by studying approximately 35 enterprise SharePoint 2010 implementations we have completed between March 2011 and November 2011. It is not unusual for those implementing SharePoint 2010 to experience a fair amount of change and conflict as part of their deployment process. Other than e-mail, no other product that you will implement will have as wide or personal “touch and feel” as SharePoint 2010 if you intend to implement this product in a wide, deep, and pervasive way. When SharePoint Server 2010 is implemented in your environment, you’re not just implementing a simple document management or Web-based collaboration solution. You’re implementing change; Culture change. Business process change and Information management change. Usually, when change happens within an organization, power balances get shifted and conflicts can ensue.
Redirect SharePoint Natively with a Content Editor Web Part (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
It can be a pain as you reorganize your site and try to get users to update their links. Here's a handy way to do a redirect without editing anything server side. Not that that's what you should do in SharePoint any way. Add this snip of code below to the content editor web part in HTML view on the page you want to redirect from. You will likely want to change the header bar to none to hide the web part as well.

Deploying Branding Solutions for SharePoint 2010 Sites Using Sandboxed Solutions (MSDN)
The SharePoint development tools in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 provide a simple and effective approach to packaging and deploying the files and code that are required to apply branding to Microsoft SharePoint 2010 sites using a sandboxed solution. This article describes a best practice for creating sandbox-compatible branding solutions by using custom master pages, cascading style sheets (CSS files), and images that can be deployed to SharePoint 2010 farms that are running either SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010.
