Microsoft Boosts Office 365 Security To Meet European Data Protection Requirements (CRN)
Microsoft has improved the security and privacy capabilities of its Office 365 cloud applications, the company said Wednesday, in a move that will help customers comply with stringent European Union data protection regulations and the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Microsoft, like rivals Google, Amazon and others, is racing to bring its cloud software into compliance with government security regulations. Earlier this year Microsoft and Google became embroiled in a dispute over whose cloud software complied with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requirements.

The Web in 2012: IE10 Will Rise (CNET)
After simmering for a few years last decade, the Web has been a frenzy of activity in the last few years. Developers are advancing what can be done, people are spending more time on the Web, and browser makers are locked in intense competition. Broadly speaking, it's easy to see that Web technology will get more important and more sophisticated. But if for some detail, here are my five predictions for what'll happen next year.

The Future Technology Nobody Is Talking About (RedmondMag)
Even though I have never been much of a gamer, I am an avid user of Microsoft Flight Simulator X. I used to be a pilot and although my vision prevents me from flying any more, I still enjoy simulated flying with Microsoft's Flight Simulator X and with Space Shuttle Mission 2007 from Exciting Simulations. Last summer one of my closest friends bought an airplane and decided to get his pilot's license. Naturally, I did my best to try to answer any questions that he had, but I also introduced him to Microsoft Flight Simulator. The simulator is good enough that a student pilot can use it to practice various skills before they ever climb into the cockpit.

Bill Gates Says He Won't be Returning to Microsoft (Yahoo!)
Bill Gates has said in an interview that he won’t be returning to Microsoft full-time, following speculation that he was planning just such a move. Speaking to Fairfax Media in Australia, where he and his family are spending a holiday, Gates was directly asked whether the story had any weight, to which he replied he would remain “part-time Microsoft, full-time Foundation for all my future.”

Terry Myerson: New Head of Windows Phone: “We’re at 0% Market Share for All Practical Purposes” (IntoMobile)
Several days ago AllThingsD reported that Andy Lees (pictured above), Head of Microsoft’s Windows Phone Business, was going to be replaced by Terry Myerson, Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone, more specifically his responsibilities included leading Windows Phone engineering. Lees has held his title as the Head of Windows Phone for the past 3 years, basically since the birth of the operating system. Now we didn’t report the story because we wanted to see what additional information might turn up. Thanks to The Verge, we have a better idea of why Lees was moved to a different role. They say that Lees didn’t exactly have stellar relationships with OEMs, that it’s his fault that Motorola stopped making smartphones running Microsoft’s mobile operating systems, which eventually made the company focus on Android and then get sold to Google. Lees was also responsible for the deal Microsoft signed with LG back in 2008 for a “strategic collaboration”. That pissed off HTC, who actually makes Windows Phones, but let’s be honest, they’re known for what they do with Android.

December 2011 CU for SharePoint 2010 Has Been Released (Stefan Goßner)
The product group released the December 2011 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2010 product family. Be aware that the December Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 is a Post-SP1 hotfix. That means that you should ensure that SP1 is installed before the December CU. The KB articles for December CU can be found at the following locations:

Common Problem: Your Backup is From a Different Version of SharePoint (ITPro)
In the last couple of years I've received several cases related to problems when using "stsadm -o restore" or "Restore-SPSite" commands. The users received an error message similar to the following: Your backup is from a different version of Windows SharePoint Services and cannot be restored to a server running the current version. The backup file should be restored to a server with version '1262884508.196508.17294360.0' The version number in the error message varies but is always a very big number which is not at all a version number for SharePoint.

Will the Future Enterprise Computer Have No Hard Drive? (AIIM)
I was talking the other day about how, when given the choice, your users will likely save their content to their local hard drive or their shared drive instead of SharePoint without some form or user adoption plan (with messaging on importance of saving to SP) and/or training. It got me thinking, we’re almost at the point where a hard drive is completely unnecessary in the workplace.

A Closer Look At “Site Use Confirmation and Deletion”… (From The Field)
The aim of this post is to take a look at the Site use confirmation and deletion functionality, and more specifically the scenario of re-enabling this after having had it turned off for a period of time, and certain caveats and differences to be aware of when comparing against typical site delete approaches. This functionality relies on the Dead Site Delete timer job. This timer job runs daily by default and after 90 days (by default) since site creation or confirmation (CertificationDate property), it will mail the owner prompting them to confirm use of the site and will increment the number of notifications sent (DeadWebNotificationCount property) by 1. If the owner “confirms use” through the mail received, this calls the ConfirmUsage() method against the site.

Access Multiple SharePoint 2010 Lists by Using LINQ (MSDN)
In this exercise, you develop and deploy a visual Web Part that reads data from three lists by using LINQ queries and displays the results in a grid view control. The Web Part also contains a drop-down control that enables you to select which query is executed. To complete this task, you must do the following: Create a Visual Web Part Project; Generate LINQ to SharePoint Proxy Code; Add Code to Create the SharePoint Controls; Add the LINQ Queries to the Project; Test the Solution.
