A Chat With Quest Software on Governing SharePoint (CMSWire)
I had the opportunity to chat with Bill Evans, Quest Software's VP and GM of SharePoint and Chris McNulty, SharePoint Strategic Product Manager, on the governance issues SharePoint orgs are faced with and how Quest can help manage the chaos. The Problem with SharePoint: The problem with SharePoint is that organizations get so excited there's an app in house that workers can use so easily, that they sometimes forget they need to plan how it really should be implemented. Stephen Fishman says in his recent article that we shouldn't blame users and governance models for SharePoint's poor siloed design. And while I agree that users should never be blamed for a system not working the way it needs to, we can't blame the software either. Poorly customized/configured, implemented and managed software is the trouble maker and that's the joint responsibility of the business and IT. And I do think governance strategies go a long way towards making software more user friendly.

Windows Azure Updated With Open Source Improvements (RedmondMag)
Microsoft rolled out its fourth-quarter service release of Windows Azure on Saturday. The new release is packed with open source interoperability improvements, expanded database capacity and so-called "simplified pricing." In addition to news about Windows Azure, Microsoft will present an all-day streaming educational session on Windows Azure on Tuesday. The Tuesday Microsoft Channel 9 event, extending from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, will feature prominent Microsoft experts, such as Scott Guthrie, Dave Campbell, and Mark Russinovich. The sign up page to watch the presentations on December 13 can be accessed here.

Microsoft's Exec Shuffle May Signal Windows Code Unification (CNET)
It's true that Windows Phone has barely made a dent in the smartphone marketplace, capturing just 1.5 percent of the worldwide market, according to Gartner. Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer acknowledged during Microsoft's financial analyst meeting in September that the company hasn't sold "quite as many [Windows Phone devices] probably as I would have hoped."  But former Windows Phone boss Andy Lees' new, vaguely described job seems to suggest something bigger is afoot. It may well be that Microsoft is ramping up efforts to unify its various Windows platforms.

Killer App Alert: Microsoft Releases Lync for Smartphones (Redmond Channel Partner)
A smartphone app with a lot of business potential just shipped -- Microsoft on Monday formally posted the Lync 2010 for Windows Phone app in the Windows Marketplace, and versions for other smartphone platforms are on the way. "The Lync 2010 for Windows Phone app is...available today, and Lync 2010 clients for iPhone, iPad, Android and Nokia Symbian have been submitted to their respective mobile app marketplaces and will be available as soon as they have been approved," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement Monday.

Google Enterprise VP: Google Apps Mega-deals in the Pipeline (PCWorld)
Google plans to announce in the coming month or so several customer wins for Google Apps that exceed 100,000 users, according to Google Enterprise Vice President Amit Singh. The customer wins will include corporations, government agencies and educational institutions, and are proof that cloud-hosted software is starting to become mainstream among organizations, Singh said. "You'll see us announce in the next four to six weeks some very, very large customers, with hundreds of thousands of users on at one time, moving to Google Apps," he said in an interview.

Upgrade – How Can We Help You Get Started? (To the SharePoint)
Hi – SharePoint Server 2010 has been out for over a year, and many of you have upgraded to take advantage of the new user interface, ease of administration, and new features. But many organizations are still evaluating whether and when to upgrade. We’d like to get a little information from those of you who haven’t yet upgraded to find out how we can help. We’re conducting an informal e-mail survey to collect data and figure out how we can help make upgrade a little easier for you.

Building up your Organization’s Value with Taxonomy (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
Getting the most out of SharePoint 2010 should involve the new Managed Metadata Service. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this service and the support it provides for modeling and deploying a rich corporate taxonomy, I’d start by reading Pat’s post Introducing Enterprise Metadata Management. By knowing how the documents and concepts could be grouped together you can start shaping the user experience with your SharePoint instance. Once you decide that you want to take the organization of your enterprise content to the next level, you need to decide how to organize your documents. If you are lucky, you already have a well-defined taxonomy that can be imported into the Term Store with SharePoint’s import capabilities. Even if you have something that starts to help organize your data the power of leveraging other views of the subject you already have will help find improved ways to access and organize your data for the users. If your organization hasn’t started to organize, or wants to improve their taxonomies, or wants to compare their data to make sure there aren’t areas where you haven’t covered, you now can find pre-built foundational taxonomies in a variety of fields and expertise.

Who Owns the Intranet? (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
In a world of Intranet turf battles, the easy answer is… well, uh… IT, HR, Corp Communication, Marketing, and so on, but in this social world isn't it really the end user should own its destiny? I reference an article from 2001 "Our intranet doesn't need an owner. It belongs to all of us -- and to none of us. Fortunately, that freewheeling approach is picking up surprising support from managers, consultants, and intranet users." Amazing that 11 years later, we are still trying to move in that direction. Social Business would dictate that it isn't owned by any department if the platform is governed and setup properly. The personalization and needs of all should be surfaced in a way that it serves the user. Join in the poll. I've created a poll to see who you think owns the Intranet. I'll replace your results with this best guess.

Friendly Vanity URLs and SharePoint (SharePoint 365)
Your SharePoint is probably accessible using a server name, like SPSERVER, or a unique name like SharePoint or COMPANYWEB. Accessing SharePoint from the internal network and computers, this address is fine. You can access the site and do your thing. It's a different story when you want to access SharePoint from outside of your network. Since the server name is on a private network, you can’t freely access it from outside of that network. Accessing your SharePoint site which is located at work from your home computer is impossible without some intervention.

Tips for a Well-designed, Great Looking SharePoint Team Site (EndUserSharePoint)
We recently rolled out SharePoint 2010 to our users. One thing we've repeatedly been asked for by our users are tips and best practices on how they can make their team sites look the best they can while still being user-friendly. I wrote an internal blog article on the subject, since in addition to SharePoint, I also have a passion for user interface design and website usability. Below is the slightly-adapted "public" version of that post:

Online Quiz: Is jQuery a Valid Option for Your Project? (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
So, to step back up on my soapbox for a quick moment. The buzz and the noise around jQuery and Client Side development in general is growing and at a fairly rapid pace. This of course is good and bad. It’s good because our applications are becoming more and more user friendly and the visual appeal is increasing exponentially a well.  Plus, as developers, we get to develop some pretty awesome functionality that before we would have had to crack open Visual Studio to get the same results. It’s definitely an exciting time.

Save 10% on All Bamboo Suites Through December 31 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Hello to everyone out there in Bamboo Nation. It's been a while since my last blog post, but with the latest news I couldn't resist. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday getting all of the press of late, Bamboo thought it would take it up a notch and offer Discount December! 'Tis the Season, after all! OK, I admit Bamboo isn't officially calling it that, I just thought it sounded good. However, the truth is that Bamboo is doing something I haven't ever seen in the two years I've worked here: offering 10% off every Suite in our catalog.  The Suites are already heavily discounted when compared to purchasing all of the individual components a la carte, and we're offering an additional 10% off your Suite purchases in December.
