I could be a bit paranoid, but I am starting to think the main reason I am going to the Microsoft SharePoint Conference is so that there is someone to wear the Panda suit.   -- Dooley

5 Reasons Why I'm Excited to be Going to the Microsoft SharePoint Conference in Anaheim (NetworkWorld)
In just about a week, I will be headed, along with several thousand other enthusiasts, to the Microsoft SharePoint Conference in Anaheim, CA. If you aren't planning to go, here are some of the reasons you might want to join me.

Federation at Microsoft (WindowsITPro)
If you’ve been reading this column for a while, you’re realizing that sooner or later you’ll need to implement some kind of federation service in your identity infrastructure. This service will allow you to provide single sign-on (SSO) to cloud-based services—both on-premises and in the public cloud—for your enterprise users, using their enterprise credentials. If you don’t provide SSO, your users will be forced to find their own ways of using these cloud service providers, and probably not in a way you’d prefer. In this column, I’ll review the production federation service of a well-known enterprise: Microsoft.

In the Cloud, the Role of IT Changes (CMSWire)
If you were to start a business today, would you hire an IT team? This question was asked recently on Twitter, and it caused me to reflect on my own technology career. Coming from an IT and operations background, I've seen a few changes over my 20+ year career. I’ve worked with numerous collaboration platforms and solutions: enterprise content management (ECM), product lifecycle management (PLM), business intelligence platforms, supply chain solutions, software configuration management (SCM), SharePoint, integrated instant messaging and web meeting clients. In addition, I have fully embraced the rise of social computing solutions and made them part of my day-to-day activities. While I have worn many hats, the majority of my career has been spent in and around the information technology organization.

What IT Should Know About Windows 8 (InfoWorld)
In the two weeks since Microsoft unveiled its Windows 8 Developer Preview at Build, more than a million people have downloaded the bits, leaving the vast majority of IT pros wondering what in the world their organizations may someday be getting into. Here, Microsoft has been characteristically mum, except for the targeted and highly vetted postings of the Windows engineering team on its Building Windows 8 blog. That dearth of substantial information, not to mention reams of unanswered questions, has not prevented Preview users from providing meaningful observations on Windows 8 for the end-user's perspective.

Verizon Chief: Windows Phone Will Beat RIM (PC Magazine)
One of the tech industry's favorite parlor games is speculating about what company will have the third-largest smartphone OS in the coming years behind Android and iOS. Hairs tend to split between RIM's BlackBerry, the ailing, but third-largest platform, and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, the minuscule new player with almost nowhere to go but up. In August, comScore reported that Windows Phone had 5.7 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, compared to 41.8 percent on Android, 27 percent on iOS, and 21.7 percent on RIM. However, RIM's market share has been on a continuous decline for months, while Windows Phone has grown at a snail-like pace.

Microsoft Adding Social Features to its CRM Suite (MarketWatch)
Microsoft Corp. will offer a social networking feature with its customer relationship management software, falling into step with market leader Salesforce.com Inc. which introduced a similar social feature last year. Dynamics CRM, the software giant's customer relationship management product, will incorporate "activity feeds," a social-networking service, for all current and new customers by the end of the year, Seth Patton, senior director of marketing for Dynamics CRM, told Dow Jones Newswires.

Gov 2.0 Expectations Could Outrun Reality (Federal Computer Week)
Gov 2.0 and open government have been flourishing for a few years now, in part inspired by innovations from leading tech companies Google and Amazon; social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter; and mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads. White House officials have adopted those technologies and pushed a Gov 2.0 and transparency agenda that will continue to generate much activity in the next five years, though that momentum could be derailed by extremely tight fiscal conditions or political shifts. The outlook for adoption of new tools appears promising, even in the face of limited funding, because the social tools tend to be relatively less expensive in comparison to development of new systems, and because the cost of mobile devices is falling.

Great Benefits to SharePoint Site Definitions (SharePoint Magazine)
The popularity of SharePoint as a collaboration tool has understandably skyrocketed in recent years. With its sheer volume of user empowerment, the collaborative adoption scenarios are almost endless. However, the novelty of elevated user empowerment can quickly erode if you are required to maintain any sort of control, standardization, or guidance for your SharePoint environment. For those first starting to tackle SharePoint head on, this is a daunting task. Several different means are available to help you gain the upper hand in your environment. One such avenue is the deployment and use of site definitions.

SharePoint or ScarePoint - Why Do So Many Fear It? The Key to End User Adoption (EndUserSharePoint)
What is SharePoint to you? Do you have a love-hate relationship with change? Many people would often agree that change is The Devil. “If it has always worked, and we have always done it this way, why fix something that isn’t broken?” I’m sure at one point we have all heard End Users use those terms. Some of us probably still have an abacus on our desks, just because we refuse to change from the way we may have originally learned how to add or subtract. But let’s face it, those calculators may be a passing fad anyway.

The Rise of the Social Revolution (AIIM)
"The social business revolution is starting to take hold in companies. These solutions are starting to empower  individuals, enabling them to challenge traditional hierarchies and bypass communication road blocks. It is also enabling the knowledge worker to better communicate with suppliers, partners and remote employees." From Mark Fidelman's article on the rise of Yammer.

Problems when Mixing Selective Deployment with Quick Deployment (Stefan Goßner)
Today I analyzed an interesting problem related to mixing Selective Deployment and Quick Deployment. Background Info: I explained the concepts of Quick Deployment in the following article: Content Deployment – The complete Guide – Part 5 – Quick Deployment. To summarize: Each enabled Quick Deployment job that originates in a specific site collection is referenced in the quickdeployjobs property in the property bag of the root site of the site collection. This is necessary as it is not guaranteed that the user performing the quick deploy or the application pool account has rights to enumerate the configured quick deployment jobs in the farm.

Adopting the Metro Style for Line of Business Apps (Fear and Loathing)
Here are some thoughts around adoption the new Metro style look and feel for line of business applications (LOB) in your organization. I am not a UX expert (is anyone?) but I think I know what looks and feels right and I strive to try to include that in every solution I build. Metro introduces us to some new concepts and as Jensen Harris pointed out, it isn’t just recompiling your app on WinRT. You have to re-imagine it and think about how it’s organized, how users will interact with it, and do some trimming of the fat so to speak as you move into the Metro world.

Microsoft BUILD Conference Wrap-up: What's in Windows 8? (The Bamboo Team Blog)
In addition to my initial thoughts on Windows 8 highlights, key takeaways from the BUILD Conference included: For the End User: Touch experience; Metro Style (tiled UI). No chrome screen. Every pixel is used to show content; Windows Apps - downloadable and installable without IT intervention. Apps are fully functional programs that run in a sandbox environment. Apps can share data between each other.
