Reduce Application Backlog with SharePoint; Making the Move to Office 365; Was .NET a Mistake?

Essential SharePoint Sandbox Solutions (CMSWire)
The release of SharePoint 2010 introduced a new way to develop and deploy SharePoint customizations called "Sandbox Solutions.” Sandbox solutions encompass both a new deployment model for no-code elements like master pages and page layouts, and a new least-privilege code execution environment. Sandbox solutions have gotten a bad rap in some circles, largely related to the restrictions placed on developers, and the limitations on supported customizations. However, sandbox solutions offer some compelling features for developers and administrators that make them essential knowledge for anyone developing and deploying custom solutions for SharePoint 2010.
How To Reduce Your Application Backlog with SharePoint (CIO)
There's always more CIOs can do to help the business succeed. Regardless of what company you work for, there seems to be an unending parade of requests to integrate some new application, or develop some application for a part of the business where you can't find a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) product to solve.
Making the Big Move to Microsoft's Office 365 (IT Business Edge)
Microsoft launched its Office 365 service towards the end of June, which saw more than 50,000 businesses and individuals signing up for a 30-day free trial within two weeks. One of them happened to be me, and I liked the Exchange Online experience so much that I decided to move my email account from its old home at leading hosted-Exchange provider Intermedia to Microsoft's Office 365 before the trial period ran out. So yes, I am now a paying user of an Office 365 service plan.
Microsoft to Focus on HTML5 and JavaScript for Office 15 Extensions (ZDNET)
Microsoft officials have made it clear that HTML5 and JavaScript are going to be key for developing for Windows 8. But Microsoft’s HTML5/JS love doesn’t stop there. It turns out that HTML5 and JavaScript also are going to be key to Microsoft’s Office 15 programmability story.
Is Microsoft Crazy to Put a Desktop OS on a Tablet? (BetaNews)
Yes, they are. But I think it's the right decision. I recently acquired an iPad -- 16GB, 3G with an AT&T data plan. After three days of use I found myself thinking about all the things I wanted to do with it but could not simply because it's a mobile OS and is primarily used for content consumption and not content creation. That's not to say there are not content creation apps for the iPad because there are. I'm simply saying that the majority use for this device is content consumption; and it does it very well.
Was .NET all a Mistake? (I Programmer)
It is time to reconsider the recent past and ask the question "was .NET just a forced detour on the road to another technology?" Before anyone explodes I'd better say that I don't have a definitive answer to the question that the title raises - how could anyone have such an answer. However the recent unsettling behavior at Microsoft has caused me to re-evaluate my .NET experiences and think hard about where it all came from and where it is all going. It is interesting and I promise not to be too provocative just for the sake of it...

Prefetching SharePoint Search Results (Waldek Mastykarz)
Prefetching content allows users to access it more quickly what improves the user experience. Find out how to prefetch SharePoint search results and cut down your users’ waiting time. Prefetching content: Whenever the user is searching for something the odds are high that he will visit at least the first search result. Depending on the quality of search results he might find just the thing he was looking for or he might go back and try another result. By prefetching content in the background you can minimize the time required to load the page and let your users use search on your site quicker.
SharePoint 2010 SP1 - Recovering Deleted Sites and Site Collections (ITPro)
This is by far my favorite feature of Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010. I can't tell you how many excited SharePoint Administrators I've had when I mention this feature. It used to be quite a process to recover a site or a site collection when it was accidentally deleted by a user or administrator (and trust me, it happens way more than you might think). So, once you deploy Service Pack 1, how do you go about getting your deleted site back?
Searching by Document Id in SharePoint 2010 (Corey Roth [MVP])
I have to admit, the Document Id Service is really only exciting to a small handful of us. I show it to customers and people in my ECM talks and the response I get is, “meh”. However, the hardcore ECM people I know really like it and they are always looking for ways to utilize it in their solutions using code or search. Today, I thought I would show a quick tip on how you can use it in search results. Now you can always pass the Document Id to DocIdRedir.aspx, but you may want to display it on a search results screen. If you have defined your own document id prefix, you may even have power users that work with these ids regularly and may want to see them when they search.
SharePoint 2010, Office 365: Overview of the default List Styles in Views - Grid User Post (Office 365 Blog)
I wanted to do a quick blog post that covers some of the functionality that is provided out of the box within Lists & Libraries that I think is often overlooked. One of the features I am referring to is the use of the out of the box view styles that can be configured. In my example below I will be looking at a task list and the different view styles that can be configured for this list. Most lists have the same styles available, so while my post is dealing with a task list it in theory applies to all list types and libraries. To get started, I will be showing screenshots of the different styles available out of the box. From there we will review the easiest way to create a view that uses the pre-defined styles.
“Additions to this Web Site have been blocked” (Mauro Cardarelli)
Another day, another challenge in administering a SharePoint 2010 environment! Here’s the scenario… Service Pack 1 was applied to an RTM instance of a SharePoint 2010 environment. The main site collection was behaving normally and was not recently restored prior to the application of SP1. Upon the successful application, users noticed they could no longer add content. Investigation showed the farm administrator could no longer edit permissions or add subsites. All security definitions seemed to be in place and there were no policies defined that would alter security. Heh?

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Programmatically Create Term Sets & Metadata Columns in the Managed Metadata Service Application (SharePoint 2010)
An article on Microsoft TechNet defines managed metadata as being "a hierarchical collection of centrally managed terms that you can define, and then use as attributes for items in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010," and I would argue that it's the most important new feature packaged in SharePoint Server 2010. It provides a central storage space for keywords, an enterprise management of metadata terms, and a content type for SharePoint 2010. Creating term sets using the browser is very straightforward thanks to the Term Store Management Tool. However, the Tool does have some limitations. It doesn't provide a way to include multiple language translations for tags or synonyms, and it doesn't merge terms into an existing taxonomy. Microsoft has implemented a fantasy application programming interface (API) that developers can use to create and manage taxonomies (types of terms).
