Salesforce's Do.com Aims to Torpedo Microsoft's Collaboration Stronghold (ReadWriteWeb)
In a very short period of time - just the last 18 months - Salesforce.com has risen from "up-and-comer," straight through "challenger" status, to the potential out-and-out leader in workforce software. Every move it has made so far, including the December 2010 purchase of open cloud platform Heroku, has been part of a well-played strategy thus far to build leveraged platforms in cloud-based services the way Microsoft leveraged its platforms for office applications... only somewhat faster.

BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Office 365 (ZDNet)
When it launched earlier this year, Microsoft's Office 365 was missing one important feature. Although you could connect it to all manner of smartphones using Exchange ActiveSync, BlackBerry devices were limited to using the slow consumer-oriented BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) to scrape Office 365's webmail. RIM promised some form of integration with its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), and it's finally arrived with the public beta of BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365.

What Does the Future Hold for Microsoft’s Business Model? (ComputerWeekly)
Sales of Microsoft's Windows operating system (OS) made up almost half of the software giant's operating income in the last fiscal year. But with Chitika research figures showing Windows's share of the PC operating systems market is shrinking - and as PC sales give way to smartphone and tablet devices - Microsoft faces new and testing challenges.

Will Windows 8 Really Perform Well on Low-end Hardware? Here's a Test. (NetworkWorld)
The following is a guest blog by freelance editor and self-confessed keyboard geek Marco Chiappetta. Among the plethora of information regarding Windows 8 that Microsoft has so far disseminated, is talk about a handful of optimizations meant to streamline, speed-up, or otherwise reduce Windows 8’s footprint in comparison to Windows 7. So, I set out to put these claims to a real world test on my old Asus EE netbook.

Mobile Patent Wars: A Closer Look at How Everyone Loses (ComputerWorld)
These days, mobile technology patents and lawsuits go together like peanut butter and jelly. Previously, a patent primarily served to help companies protect their intellectual property; now, however, Apple, HTC, Microsoft, and smaller companies are using patents as leverage, suing one another in attempts to gain the upper hand. The trend, experts say, is quickly spinning out of control, and hurting consumers when it comes to mobile-gadget choices and prices.

Which of the Big Five Web Browsers is the Best? (Review) (ZDNet)
With Firefox 8’s early arrival, and new major updates to three of the other major Web browsers, Chrome 15; Opera 11.5, and Safari 5.1.1 it’s high time to take another look at our current generation of Internet Web browsers and see what’s what. Only Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) 9 hasn’t seen a significant improvement in the last few months.

Excluding the Information Professional in SharePoint (AIIM)
There is a conversation that keeps repeating every time I'm speaking at a SharePoint event, it's the question of  "where do I fit in"? I'm usually put in the "Special Topics" section of the SharePoint  events along with other people with similar experience and information to provide to the community. I wonder, if ECM and Collaboration are "Special Topics" in SharePoint, what information are we keeping from the SharePoint community at large?

Backwards Compatibility Mode – How Does this Impact Your SharePoint 2010 Update Plans? (From The Field)
With the release of SharePoint 2010, a feature known as backwards compatibility mode was introduced. There is very little public documentation available around this feature, so in this post I will try and clarify what it is, how it works, and a few very important things to be aware of which will impact your SharePoint update deployment plans, whether you like it or not!

Optimizing the Process of Deploying SharePoint Packages to Minimize the Impact on Farm’s Availability (Waldek Mastykarz)
If you have deployed SharePoint Packages in the past, you know, that, unless you have a second farm, deploying SharePoint Packages means outage to your Web Applications. There are however a few things that you can control to minimize the impact on the availability of your websites. The deployment process is a black box: The process of deploying SharePoint Packages might seem to you like a blackbox. Not surprisingly: you build a SharePoint Package, add it to your SharePoint farm and finally deploy it to one or more Web Applications. Except for scheduling when the deployment should be executed, it seems like there isn’t much you can tweak. It turns out however, that there is some fine print in the deployment process and changing a few things in your deployment process could help you minimize the impact on the availability of your websites during the deployment process.

Auditing Access to Confidential Document Libraries in SharePoint (SharePointEduTech)
As more information makes its way into SharePoint I’m increasingly asked how to establish an audit trail of access to document libraries containing confidential information.  This is a requirement for many types of information subject to compliance regulations like patient data in HIPAA. In this post I’ll show you how to use the audit capability in MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server) 2007/2010 to audit view access to a specific document library.  You need the ability to audit specific objects in SharePoint rather than entire SharePoint sites since enabling view access auditing at the site level will create a deluge of events – at least one event for every page view in the site.

Building and Consuming a Custom oData Service for SharePoint 2010 (SharePointDevWiki)
For a recent project, I’ve been involved with a fellow SharePoint developer Jeroen Van Bastelaere (http://www.skavi.be) in optimizing a SharePoint portal application. The first idea we had was to use caching, so we built a lightweight caching framework that is flexible and maintainable enough and that allowed us to reach our main objective which was gaining performance. I tell this little story because the topic of this post is actually inherited from the above context. Thus, still having the performance objective in mind, we’ve also been asked to build asynchroneous controls (Web Parts, user controls…) for user friendlyness and fast initial page loads.

Must-see Video: 'SharePoint Spokesperson Audition' Starring Luke Perry, Carmen Electra, Alan Thicke & Florence Henderson (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I owe you an apology.  If you read my post last month on Jared Spataro's SPC 2011 keynote, you may recall that I described a video that was shown to attendees at the SharePoint Conference, the setup of which involved Jared and his Microsoft colleagues Kurt DelBene and Jeff Teper in Hollywood "auditioning" name actors and actresses for the role of official spokesperson at the 2011 SPC.  In that post, I promised to embed the video itself once it was made public.
